    People speak at 200-250 words per minute, so I don't think 90 is the speed you think at. It's probably the speed for you right now because your brain is doing two things at the same time (think and type), but once your hands are free you'll be several times faster. We also probably think at an even higher speed than we think, because when you speak you still need to turn it into words

If you have to write a paper (at least in my case) your brain is definitely much slower that your Hands (if its about a remotely complex topic ) bc of that i feel like anything above 120 is just for fun + if you type around 100wpm in a social setting its drawing quite "a lot" of attention aka. makes you look autistic af . If you want to type faster, get into the habit of pressing multiple keys at near-simultaneous speeds. For words like "post", where all four fingers are in separate positions, try to press them at almost exactly the same time without messing up the order. If you're a piano player, it's similar to playing grace notes. That's a large part of how I clock in at 135 WPM, which isn't a mind-blowing figure by any means, but I do believe it can help you type faster.

    There's no way I could ever type as fast as I can think, it's not physically possible, but I found that I can better focus on the topic without my hands getting in the way by speaking into my voice memos app, or in an app like Drafts which will do a decent job of dictating it into written words after the fact. I found I'm much more productive when I can get it all out in one go as a rough draft and continue from there

  • @emixmh

    You can use Nitro Type, it's a browser game where you race cars, your car's speed is determined by your wpm. It's more complex looking than Type Racer, and you don't need to have 100% accuracy.

  • @amirtorhan2762

    I've always been a decent typer, but lately been trying to improve it even further to become fast. It really is possible for anyone to get fast as long as you are practicing regularly. I'm currently at around 160wpm and I used to be at 90-100 for what felt like ages. I'm not sure if I am more productive now, but at least it feels like I am 🤣

    • @amirtorhan2762
      @amirtorhan2762 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@damian_madmansnest It's hard to know without seeing you type. But generally the answer is really boring, just keep practicing. Sometimes the progress feels super slow, and you might even temporarily get worse, but over time you will improve as long as you keep practicing regularly.
      And of course you need the basics which I am assuming you already have (touchtyping and home row, don't ever look at the keyboard). Make sure you really know where all the keys are by muscle memory. When you are typing fast it should almost happen automatically, you don't think where to move your fingers, it just happens from all the muscle memory which you have got from all the practice.

    A way to really type at the speed of thought (250 wpm) is introducing chording technology. You need a keyboard that registers all of your inputs at the same time (n-key rollover) and software that lets you build a database of word combinations. For example database could be "datb" all pressed at the same time. A processor then registers you are done and outputs the word from the database.
    Products that use this concept are the CharaChorder and the Steno keyboard. But there are also open source solutions you can assemble yourself.

    for all my fellow latin-language natives, I found out the international English keyboard to be the absolute fastest layout for us. The reason is actually pretty simple: by default a language like English uses just the letters and adds ONE button, which is the apostrophe - ' -, making it a "plus 1". Latin languages, on the other hand, have the stress mark in every other word because they have 5 stressed letters: à, ò, ù, è, é, ì. This means you are typing with a plus 7, instead of a plus 1, compared to the English language. Now, the international English layout allows you to put the stress mark in the text field and apply it to the following letter automatically, bringing the plus 7 down to a measly plus 2. While it is true that this process adds one button press to the typing, it is also true that the positioning of the apostrophe in the international English layout is such that the speed gain is higher than the time lost. It is known (because people actually studied this), in fact, that every finger is responsible for a fixed amount of buttons (i.e. letters) and a latin layout is extremely disruptive because it adds 6 buttons placed in such a way you are forced to give up on the rest position within the home row, resulting in a huge time loss. Therefore, if you are considering a new laptop or keyboard, try out the international English layout before ordering (or after, if you have a hot-swappable mechanical keyboard) and you'll be surprised!
    P.s. the USA layout is awful because the stress mark is outside the keyboard area, while in the international English it sits in the right half of the left shift (hence the "split left shift" denomination in keyboard configurators).

    • @jack_2612
      @jack_2612 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@driden1987 programmers don't write in latin languages. Since you write in English all the time, there is no significant difference between EN-International and the ANSI layout except for the return key. What really makes a difference, as I stated in my comment, is the split left shift; having the stress mark on that button makes an insane difference in typing speed, but you never use it if you write in English. "It just works better" is true for coding, but not for writing in any European or latin language.

    Also I was very disappointed when I've found out that I just can't do everything with just the keyboard in Excel (I do most of my work in Excel FYI). There are shortcuts for a lot of things but not everything.....
    Even just learning to use shortcuts are significantly improving my workflow, so it's not all doom and gloom.

      you dont rl need it to get faster but if you got rsi(Wrist/forarm pain) it might be worth looking into. Tough at that point i would just get a split keyboard, anyway the reason why i would stick to Qwert is to retain the ability to type on any Keyboard/Laptop
