    Sean, I was so touched at that tribute to your dad. I lost my husband last July, and I had not thought about sprinkling his ashes as the base of a planted tree. That is a beautiful memorial. Thank you for sharing, and I'm so sorry for your loss.

    My neighbor just lost his dad, who had planted an oak tree 9 years ago when he was given 9 months to live. I added two grapes to it in memorial.

    Growing in buckets, bins, and boxes made out of repurposed wood, I have to be creative to have a permaculture approach. I use a perennial in a bin as a prime plant, and try to use biennial and annual herbs and greens to build around. Chive bushes, horseradish, Lime Balm, Yarrow, Sunchokes, raspberry, mint, balms, and agastaches have been my main prime plants, with Parsleys, Bloody Dock, Sorrel, Arugula, Dill, Cilantro, Red Lettuces, kale, radishes, and basils all perpetuating themselves, giving me virtually effort free forage early in the season. I watch a lot of what you do and try to scale down, recreate, or mimic the effects. Some of my bins are on the 5th year, all produce and generate more propagation every year, and I’m always adding new groupings and configurations of my Guilds and Spring plant starts (toms, peps, eggplant, squash, etc). Thanks for the vid, ❤ it as always 😊

    Sean, I'm so sorry for your loss; planting a tree in honor of your father creates another set of relationships in that guild, and I'm sure it will be a special guild to you. This video was helpful in seeing the evolution over time, and starting to understand how the relationships benefit the various participants.

    Its always fascinating thinking about nominal determinism, your last name meaning people of the oaks , my last name in german refers to "people who make brushbundles" and me working as a gardener at a tree nursery who is fascinated by willows seems to match up quite weirdly , makes you think sometimes.. Sorry to hear about your loss, thank you for sharing something that personal, you always seem passionate and empathetic towards everything, and over the years, watching the videos you put out make it hard to not feel connected to you in some way, best wishes for you and your loved ones

      Thanks for the kind words here...
      The Ashworth Burr Oak we planted in his honor was cut nearly flush to ground by a browsing rabbit this fall. I was upset at first but then I remembered that I have seen that happen over and over again with young nut trees... Rabbits cutting to ground the first year growth. The 2nd year they rebound with great vigor and take off and have a thicker trunk. So I'm hopeful for that and trust the rabbit got an energetically potent meal too. I suspect it is a win win but with a longer time scale than we're used to!

    • @hilaryduffield2552
      @hilaryduffield2552 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That must have been a bit of a shock, happening to a special tree. I hope that if it was cut only nearly to the ground, that there will be lots of new buds coming up soon and it may even grow up in an interesting form now, courtesy of one hungry rabbit.

    You talk as if you purposefully planted the Peach tree with the expectation to die before it's reached it's potential....an excuse for growing a disarray orchard where neither of the trees can reach their full potential. By your planting definition it's impossible to grow a healthy orchard.

    • @lastharvest4044
      @lastharvest4044 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He planted with redundancy, and you can always cut a tree down later when you have excess. The peach helped support the paw paw because they need shade in their first few years. It looks great.

      I bet any garden that you planted would be totally manicured and well trimmed evenly spaced with time and attention given to just the right amount of water and fertilizer and any dying leaves moved immediately and any insect that would even take a chance to munch would face an onslaught of chemicals and any birds or wild life would be dinged and harassed to no end... Just saying

      I see by your screen name that you are a tree lover! If you're unfamiliar with the tenets of permaculture, this video may be baffling. It's a very different way of thinking about planting that includes care of the earth, continually building the soil naturally - regenerative farming. If you're curious, check out some of the related videos that TH-cam lists here (or better yet, more Edible Acres video)s. If you're not interested, be well! But you might want to refrain from insulting something you don't understand.
