It's not about power level. I also play Samut and it can go crazy, don't get me wrong. But if he didn't have the turn 2 lurking predators, and selvala to refill his hand, the game would go to the tergrid deck without any doubt. He had a bomb and noone had an answer. I think the only real takeaway from this game is that casual Commander decks don't pack enough interaction and get exploited for it by intense value engines. This game would have looked pretty different if Lurking Predators had been answered immediately, having Tergrid play Kingmaker on accident didn't help either. This may have been cEDH speed, but the way it all played out is pretty indicative of why casual Commander has so many "problems"

Bringing mana crypt + Tergrid isnt exactly casual (im fine with the power-level, but it was superior to what the others were playing). Also, "theft" decks like Tergrid are not very fun to watch when they are webcam games like this because its hard to follow what exactly they steal as the white blank cards are not the easiest to read.

People who are saying that the I Hate Your Deck players didn't follow casual rules and the power levels were ridiculous just chill for a moment. Samut and Tergrid are already high powered decks but tbh all these decks were pretty fair. It's all about sequencing, card draw and opening hands.
Joe (piloted Samut) just had good sequencing and had lucky draws, if he didn't have lurking predators in his opening hand or drew into it that early the game would've been very different.
Yes I admit that Mana Crypt may not be casual but if it's not the bulk of your wincon and you just use it as a mana rock that generates you two mana I don't see anything wrong with. It's just a 0 mana sol ring that damages yourself. Joe literally had a Gaea's Cradle and if anything that's worse in a creature based deck like Samut because of the mana it can generate. Joe also mentioned that his opening hand had 1 land, if he literally didn't draw another land the game would be super different. Also go check his decklist, yes there's a lot of optimized cards in his deck but it's just mana dorks and big dumb creatures. Usually if you see Samut in a cEDH table, it's usually stax with food chain combo and Joe had none of those cards.
Same with Lynch (piloted Tergrid). Tergrid just on the surface is busted anyway but they did have a quick discussion during the game the power level of Tergrid and the call for it to be banned but diving deep into it it's a mono colored commander which is good but also has limitations. Again you can probably put random black cards in the deck with some ramp, removal and draw in a Tergrid build and it would still be like at a 7/8 power level. Tergrid is just a brutal commander.
Look at both Dylan and Cam's decklists, they're still pretty powerful with some high power cards too. Maelstrom Wanderer is a popular cEDH combo deck and just a powerful deck in casual like Samut just in different colors. Nethroi doesn't see much cEDH builds but still a strong mutate reanimator creature deck. If Dylan or Cam just had better opening hands and draws, this game would be a completely different story.
Again, each decklist has high power cards that if drawn tides would have shifted. I don't have a copy of Crypt but I run an Atla Palani deck with a proxy of it and I've almost died a couple times due to losing coin flips a lot. The big one for me though is Gaea's Cradle but Joe didn't drop it 'til late game where he was basically winning anyways so it is what is. Each decklist is pretty even it's just Joe had better draws. If Dylan or Cam had better hands and draws they're could've came back and win so just because a player plays Mana Crypt doesn't mean they're off on a higher power because that's just not true. One boardwipe would have killed Joe's combo, more mana on Dylan and Cam's side could have changed everything, stopping Awaken the Erstwhile with Tergrid out would have changed the game. Players think that these decks were on opposite sides on the power level spectrum but that's just farce, Joe literally just got super lucky with the draws and sequencing. I have a pretty good Korvold deck and I remember this one game where I had one of the most perfect hands that allowed me to get him out turn 2 and win on 4. But my next game was a 12 round game where I drew 5 lands and no other mana producers. Don't get me wrong Joe's deck has a pretty consistent win rate but one slight mistake, unlucky draw could've shifted the game entirely.
Stop comparing power levels, just because one deck went absolutely crazy doesn't mean there next game will be the same.
Thank you for listening to my Ted Talk

If you dont have that its not CEDH (free counter spells, 1 mana instant remuavl etc.)... on other hand, if you play yours deck super optimiazed like we had here with cEDH style just no fast interaction ( so its not cEDH) it will destory all Level 6-7 and even lower Level 8 super fast with zero chance to win for enemy ;) It will even looks even mower Power Level then cEDH becosoe ther will be not slots for interaction cards - just all main game-plan cards ;)
This is why for example Elves are cosider super good deck for many player. Ther are 100% not cEDH - like hell no - you cannot make pure Elves cEDH ( you can make creature deck with a lot elves in it - still it will be not pure Elves deck). If you woudl takes yours super optimazed Elf-Ball deck to Level 6-7 tables, it will feel liek yours deck is 5 power level abov others... you will kill all in turn 5-6 , with 20 creatures 10/10 or more power... and its not HARD to do for proper Elf deck... but on cEDH all yours fast mana creatures / token generators / tutors etc. will just not resolve and you will do NOTHING...
This is problem for loong time... i think we need 12 Levels to describe power, and 11 and 12 shoud be cEDH. Then this deck would be 9-10, and Tegrid would be 8, and others would be 7 ;)
ps. In this game, we sow ZERO mass remuval - what is like most importent interaction for level 6-8 tables... 1 good board Wipe would change this game hard ;)

Without spurring any hatred towards the episode (which I think was well done; as well done as you could get with Tergrid over webcam shenanigans) I think it showcased the disparity between what's considered "casual" versus "optimized" versus whatever terminology you want to use. Several of my fellow players have hotly debated what's low-power, mid-power, etc. over Discord servers during the pandemic and finding that balance has proven difficult. Is it the combos, the tutors, the countermagic, the mana ramp; at what point is your deck too good for "casual" and solidify itself solidly in the more competitive arena?
There was a distinct power difference in the decks at play in the episode, and I'm just curious what people think. Interesting game to watch.

I think people still confuse optimized casual decks and cEDH decks. Yes, Joe's deck ran a Gaea's Cradle and a Mana Crypt, but if you have those cards why not put them in a deck. Samut, isn't really the archetype of cEDH deck, like, say, Thrasios/Tymna. It's a 5 mana Naya Commander. Joe didn't play any counterspells, his main engine was a 6 mana enchantment nobody plays in cEDH and his wincon was completely casual, not a Thassa's Oracle/Demonic Consultation combo or what not...

    • @LoydHuhn
      @LoydHuhn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think the "casual" joking is just that. This is actually sticking out as an issue in power level between decks at a casual table. Def not CEDH, but certainly in the upper tier of power just because of the crazy fast mana and tutors vs w/e P2W were playing.

    • @blackneto_

You speak the true true! Lol she's not cedh by any means but she's powerful with the way I built her. They wanted us to play higher powered decks and I would honestly rate her as like a 7-8 out of 10 on the power scale. Once you get to 9-10/10 that becomes cedh.

    • @chrisdesjeunes3691
      @chrisdesjeunes3691 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@LoydHuhn The misconception a lot of cEDH players have is that casual players never run "powerful" cards. It's not always true. Power level is a casual issue and that's because lots of players don't know how to evaluate their decks, which wasn't helped by the power creep of the last 2 years. Games are faster : the CMC of the cards we run has lowered, WotC has been printing even more fast mana these last few years (Mox Amber, Arcane Signet, Jeweled Lotus) and "free" interaction (Force of Negation, Fierce Guardianship, Deflecting Swat...), cEDH has been bleeding into casual play.
That being said, aside from beginners (and there are some, hence why we also bring our casual decks at the LGS), assuming everybody will be playing funny casual decks is on you. Ultimately, people play to win (wink wink) and will be bringing their best decks as well. For some it means tutors and fast mana, for some a shitload of counterspells, for others combos or all of the above. Though I find that really good players with a self-brewed focused deck often beat powerful decks and it's always enlightening to watch them pilot it.
Are there jerks amongst us who lie about the power level of their decks? Yeah, sure. But at the same time, we can't really begrudge the dedication a lot of players put into their decks and the hours they put into playing it. Me, if my deck did its thing but I didn't win, it's ok. If a really cool deck won at the table, I enjoy the hell out of that win too. Hopefully, I learned a cool interaction or I saw a card I didn't know... :)

I love the comments on this one. Of the decks, each had a similar average CMC, with Wanderer being a little higher, though off-set a bit by cascading.
Tergrid was playing against 3 "good stuff" decks. That is literally the dream scenario of getting grossly strong stuff for one mass discard spell.
Samut had a T2 lurking predators with no tutoring. Nobody could answer it and it really snowballed.
Cam and Dylan kinda got shafted while behind behind and then mass discarded by Tergrid who trying to get back to a level playing field, but sometimes that is how it goes.
That all being said, I DO think these decks would be considered casual. It's that IHYD brought 8's and PTW brought 6-6.5's. Definitely both on the casual level, but PTW brought a little under what the other two were doing. IHYD brought high power, PTW brought "I think this is super sweet and didn't make many cuts due to pricing".

Yeah, they are just playing bad cEDH decks. They are playing all the enablers like, artifact ramp, expensive multiocolor mana base, tutors, but instead of playing good cards that win, they play bad cards that slow the game down and extract more "value". Why stick Dryad, Seedborn, Nyxbloom, and Zacama, when you could have stuck like any other combo of creatures that would have just won the game? They are trying to win as quickly and consistently as possible, but with suboptimal gamelines. It's basically the cEDH ethos and buildstyle with bad finishers that slow the game down instead of win.
To be clear, I don't want to hate on that style of play. Live your best life, but you're essentially trying to make cEDH but without infinite combos or alternate wincons like Thassa's Oracle because I guess as long as you're not winning through a true infinite, then it must be casual or something.
Meanwhile the lads are playing low power level, slow, light on interaction actually casual decks. It's just kind of poor etiquette in my opinion.

I see this a lot, even in these comments, where people see Crypt and they think, "Wow, power level's a little HIGH don'tcha think!?" But that is a false assumption. Obviously they ARE doing powerful things in their decks, but it is worthwhile to make this distinction. Do not just knee jerk react to seeing something like a Crypt and assume it means something for the deck's overall power. I play Crypt in everything, but I can tell you right now, my Otrimi mutate deck is not exactly gonna hang with the stuff going on in this video, for instance :p

These were not cedh decks. They were high powered decks.

@@thetimebinder oh sorry I forgot. When your opponents are playing basics and you're whipping out duals and mana positive rocks, that's a fair fight. My bad you got me bro.

@@thetimebinder call their decks whatever you want, the match wasn't even minutely close in power level. Those guys were playing 8.5/9 and Dylan and Cameron were playing 6's (at least that's what it looked like).

@@GoodJewJew there was definitely a miscommunication of power level expectation. That doesn't make them playing cedh. They were absolutely playing high powered, which is still casual.

I hope this is a bridge for you guys to get together with the command zone. Maybe you two could be on for a special competitive edition.

I would like to point out there was a big oversight the Samut player did not sacrifice half his cretures to Fraying omnipotence unless i missed something.

Is there a way that we can get a link to the Samut decklist. the current link takes us to their patreon.

This is like my worst nightmare when someone says they’re bringing out their “casual” deck.

I personally believe that Mana Crypt (or any card like it) isn't always cEDH. It really fits anywhere. What matters is what it's being used for. I think strong cards have a place in a casual deck, as long as your deck as a whole isn't pubstomping.

This reminds me of my buddy. His “jank” deck runs all the zero cost counter spells.

I think what some of the comments are getting wrong is that people arent saying Joe and Lynch brought cEDH decks; they obviously didn't. However, they definitely brought much stronger power based decks compared to the PtW boys. Dylan and Cam's decks, while probably having their own snowball potential, just couldn't keep up with the optimization of the IHYD bro's decks. This game shows off why in casual, all decks need to have a clear power level and a clear showing of what they plan to do and what they can do. You can't say "im bringing a casual deck" and not mention you can make 6 mana on Turn 2; while yes, that can be casual, you have to make it clear to your opponents. If say Dylan and Tyler brought their stronger EDH decks, Edgar Markov and Xyris, this episode would have turned out a lot fairer. Regardless, the banter and table interaction was good at least
