“Echo of Falling Water: The Inundation of Celilo Falls” details the construction of the Dalles Dam and the loss of an important cultural landmark on the Columbia River. Celilo Falls and the neighboring Celilo Village are described as one of history’s greatest indigenous marketplaces. In addition to being a natural spectacle, the waterfall provided the region with flourishing salmon runs that made up a large part of the local industry. It served as a hub for trade and culture, and was deeply embedded in Native American religion and spiritual practices. However, the construction of the Dalles Dam in the 1950s choked back the waters of the Columbia, drowning Celilo Falls and destroying centuries-old traditions and treaty-protected fishing sites. The dam, though a symbol of American progress, took away the livelihoods of indigenous peoples in the region. America’s growing need for triumph, fueled by technological innovation and great feats of engineering, ultimately led to the tragedy of Celilo Falls.

Nice job. I would suggest looking at materials that the Army Corps used after the massive 1948 Columbia River "Vanport Flood". At the Grand Coulee Dan Visitors Center the ACOE literally explains that it was a significant driver in further dam construction. The 1948 flood is featured in the exhibits and nightly laser show projected on the dam itself.

do you think this was direct result of the eradication of the beaver population and its dams? the 1948 flood. ive been reading a lot about how these beaver dams could be a great tool for flood/drought/wildfire

All she can remember is the whaling ? That makes no sense. I didn't know that any whales ever made it to Celilo Falls.

I’m for restoring Celilo Falls And if removing the Dalles damn would do that I’d be for it. Not because I think industry is bad or irrigation is harmful because the Falls look so beautiful and I’ve never seen them because I was born after the building of the dam. It would be great to restore them to its natural wonder and if it benefits Native Americans all the better. There’s something amazing coming I feel in the near future and this would be a project I would whole heartedly!

i saw some people worry that it'll wash away so much good quality sediment into the ocean, but i think if we have beaver dams it shouldnt be much of an issue
i hope we can take this stupid dam down and try to recover the natives tradings posts
