      Worked with an independent roofing crew that were all pushing 70 about to retire. They lost over a mill collectively. I don't know what happened to them but it was incredibly sad. You really should just go home. Quit. Change professions. Anything but deal with osha.

      OSHA came to our plant and they had a state trooper with them.
      I'm not sure why because it was a woman and we don't see many women in our workday. So it's kind of a "deployment queen" situation when we do (that's when stateside she's a 4 or 5, and on deployment she's an 8.75)

      They show up on residentials every once in awhile. Had one stop by my roofing install a few weeks ago. Got a warning for no harnesses. She parked around the corner and watched all day long. Stopped work until I could get ropes and harnesses for everybody.
      I'm sure they stop by when they are driving by. But they still do show up

    In 6 years of being on commercial electrical jobs, I've never seen an OSHA inspector. I thought they were a myth

      I was on them for 8 years and the only time I saw one was in my first month of doing commercial electric work and he was was going around checking out the ladders and extension cords I still have a 8, 10 and 12 foot ladders at my house that had to be off the job site and he wrote a novel of violations for every extension cord that didn't have a factory end on it, but the owner of the company put him in check pretty fast because the aftermarket cord ends say to be installed by a qualified electrician personal, The company I worked for had 3 master electricians and at least 15 journeyman and 10-15 helpers, turns out everyone but the helpers are qualified to install aftermarket ends, never saw one in 8 years. I don't know why.

      He was walking right below me, looking up in disbelief.

      My friend back in the early 2000s walked a ladder and fractured his forearm in half! He had the full erector set, pins, stitches you name it! It was a disgusting site when we found where the screams were coming from. He never went back to the electrical trade

      But people still like freak out sometimes when they first see me do it. (I can go around corners and everything) It just amazes me how totally scared of pretty much everything this younger generation is. I mean some people act like it's some kind of incredible feat.

    I had a job with a big company in Baltimore. It was extremely obvious the higher ups and the OSHA reps had some deal going because the OSHA inspections only lasted 5 minutes and they never pointed out any issues. It was pretty cool not having to worry about their nonsense for once

    I'm in HVAC, but whenever I run wires for indoor units I rarely use ladders the way they're meant to be used. I'm backwards, on one foot sometimes while balancing with a hand on the joyce. Safety third!

Have you ever been on a ladder with only three of the feet touching the ground and you have to lean and push forward on the one side to make it stable? I guess it's kind of like that but continuous we call it walking the ladder

    I used to pay a lot for the fiberglass 350lb ladders and told employees they were fired if they walked my ladder. That cuts the life of the ladder by 50-75%.

    In Germany we have wooden ladders that are made for walking with them, but using a different technique than the one shown here. Its safe enough to be common practice and even seen on official instructional videos by Knauf for example.

      The fiberglass ladders have a tendency to snap at the foot when walking.
      You can strengthen them with wood but the safety man will blow a gasket.

      Well, you don’t have to back far to see what work was like before health and safety. Some scary looking statistics related to work injuries, deaths and long term health problems like cancer.
      A necessary evil unfortunately. Apart from stopping individuals killing themselves, I think its more important to stop unscrupulous employers forcing their staff into dangerous situations for the sake of profit.
      It helps put a higher price on a workers life.

    We were working on a building where OSHA rented a space. One fellow was on the top of the ladder working above the ceiling grid and got a ticket. Every subcontractor walked off the job and refused to come back unless OSHA promised not to ticket us. We were on the job the next day.

      That's a 6-foot ladder. You're allowed to go up to 4 steps. Rule of thumb: On an n-foot ladder, you're allowed to use up to the n-2 step.

    The best thing you can do is go on break when the inspector comes - and ask them to join you. Banter with them, offer them a smoke. If you’re mates with them by the time you get back to work, you’ll be fine (only applies to New Zealand and Australia)

    I was in construction management for years and when osha comes to a job site you’re allowed to stop them for up to like an hour to wait for your own safety guy so whenever one would show up I’d tell to come with me to my office, text every foreman on the job to send their crews home unless they were completely set and doing easy work on the ground and to check every bathroom for toilet paper and ass gasket and if they were missing then to padlock them closed and after that hour was up there’s be like 6 people on a job there was just 30+ people on when we finally took him to walk the site 😂

      Yeah. My boss back in 2006 told me that if OSHA ever came into the jobsite, i was fired. Cause i had 35 hours of OSHA training and was trying to explain to him how cutting the safety limiter on the scissor lift was probably not the best idea. The basket was literally swaying 5 feet back and forth it was so unstable.

      @@richardfiedler2201 IDK. I dont think i like union people either though. Example: We had an elevator union out of miami knock a kicker over and it bonked him in the hardhat. The ENTIRE crew went home and they had literally just gotten there.
      It seems the average union guy plays into the "perks" of the union more than doing it for the ability to stay in work.

      @@KibaStar Every trade has thrown Union, rules, benefits, pay scale yes they are different from each other. I was in a Carpenters Union out of Boston. Strong union great benefits all business. But you are right every state and city is different. Good luck whatever you decide.

    I learnt to walk and pivot ladders twice as high or more doing stagecraft in highschool. Adjust a stage light, walk, adjust another, moving 360. Older wooden ladders were flexible and you could toss them around. I suppose they wouldn't let you do that today.

      I learned that doing lighting. Yea walking it is cool and everything but every now and then you also might need to get in a sketchy precarious position on it. All that damn wobble and play from walking it so much doesn't seem so great then. Then imagine having to do some shit one day like stack a ladder on top of a pallet on top of a scissor cause it won't quite reach something and you're just trying to get it done, then boom it's the ladder made of twizzlers.

    OSHA is there to protect you from your employer making your work an unsafe place. They only want you to NOT get injured, theyre actually really important to help you from when a greedy corporation tries to murder you and you werent wearin your hard hat.
    On the other hand they also will stop you from doing the fun/dangerous shit that even your company doesnt want you to do

    I got told to stop walking my ladder while i was putting cardboard up around the garage in a new house for spray in insulation for the Attic. I climbed down and handed the guy my tools and stack of board and went back to the shop and quit. Found another job two days later
