Jalapeno's are so underrated in the pepper world.... I grow them every year... Most people straight up say they hate them because the only Jalapeno's they've ever tried are those shitty pickled ones you get at Subway.... Eat a fresh one straight off the plant its completely different... its so beautiful and juicy and sweet and they're not overly hot either so it makes them user friendly for beginners. I live in Australia and we're at the beginning of spring over here at the moment, the warm weather is on its way =P

I saved seeds from sweet peppers that were planted near jalapenos. 1 plant turned out to be a mild jalapeno / sweet hybrid. The fruit is double the size of a jalapeno, but less spicy, interesting combo.

You can grow different peppers near each other you don't need to worry about the peppers flavor they will be the same, BUT if you decided to save seeds from one of those peppers off those plants it could be cross pollinated and produce a hybrid with different flavor characteristics
Yup.
Yes it's the next generation that will be affected, but based on what I have read, they need to be more on the order of 1/2 mile apart to prevent cross-pollination. A bee or other insect can easily move from her deck to the garden.

Your garden is a dream
I grew mine from the store bough green peppers seeds. Yes, they are very unlikely to germ, but it took me just like four tries before something sprouted, about three seeds each try.
Also I think they use some fast growers breeds, because mine took like a month to start the flowers. And it is indoors at winter, with low quality UV lamps(pink LED bulbs, 10$ and 15wt each).
And in my country the maximum you'll get in seeds store is some basic local chili breeds(more in sweet side than spicy). To get jalapeno or habanero you have to order it online from aboard.

I plant seeds differently nowadays.
I plant a lot of seeds and grow the biggest, most branching seedlings and discard the rest.
I'm getting better pepper plants this way.

Not at all what I was looking for or expects. But a great video either way.
I think I might have too much random knowledge of plant biology and junk. When you said your was growing nice and bucht, and not Leggy, I though "well, yeah, kinda expected that, with the custome tailored soil and edequate Sunlight... they have everything they need to be healthy". And when you said there didn't seem to be any change whe. You topped them, I thought "wow, that's kinda cool. I would have expected some kind of response from the plant. But at the same time, perfectly healthy plants in perfectly healthy soil. Yeah I cna see that".
However... my curiosity, were the peppers on the one that was topped misshapen compared to the one that wasn't, or vis versa? Or did the one that was topped produce a little more peppers and ripen sooner than the one that wasn't? Just curious.
finally I know why the seeds from green jalapenos don't germinate! I wish I saw this video earlier.

the epsom salt only makes sense if you KNOW that your soil is depleted in magnesium
2:28 Wish I knew that before planting them all in one big pot. Guess I'll be having hot bell peppers and sweet jalapeños.
That is not the case. The seeds from the fruit may cross pollinate, but the fruit themselves will only have the mother plants dna

I found a jalapeño that was almost fully red outside so I tryed to separate the seeds dry them and planted them
Cross pollination only happens for the seeds produced by the peppers, so next years seeds would produce sweet jalapenos or hot bell peppers for example

My jalapeño plant is only about 1 foot tall, and is already growing peppers, but two peppers are growing out of each flower. Is this odd ? Or did I over feed them ? Water 3,4 times a week depending on heat.

Yes you can overwinter peppers and they could live over 5 years if looked after during winter months. Bring them inside

Loved the video! I got 4 jalapeños on my plant and they were great, now small red cherry looking like jalapeños are coming in. Is this due to the heat? We are in the 90's now in AZ. I see another commented on planting a Serrano pepper plant next to the jalapeños...I don't know if that's a mistake but I did the same thing. Rut roh.
I am 16 years old and I saw some jalapeño seeds and the super market. I decided to grab them and try to grow them. I didn’t do any research lol. But when i saw the actual jalapeños starting to come in, I noticed that they were a little gigantic, note that they were only a light green color. When they started to get dark green they were HUGE. they were about the same size as my size 11 feet. I honestly don’t know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.. but they tasty and nice and spicy.
Yeah those aren’t Jalapeños. Once that get to 5 inches they’re considered to be gigantic so there’s no way you’ve got ones that big.

Very informative video growing my first jalapeno plant. I have a question I just started noticing jalapeno peppers on them they are skinny if I leave them on will they get fat like a normal jalapeno. Also I should have topped it like video suggested but this has been a learning process learning compost,manure and fertilizer other than that been pretty much letting it grow naturally
In tropical climate, will the plant be always producing jalapeños? Eventually it will die, right?

My jalapeños just started germinating but I put 3 seeds in each cup separately but they all germinated so do I just put them in their own vase and delicately separate them?

I bought some jalapenos at the grocery store that were 5" long, the biggest jalapenos I've ever seen.
I cored the seed mass out, split it in half, and stuck each in a cup of potting mix. They have both started several plants in each cup, and when they are a little bigger I will separate them.
I plan to grow them out, and force at least one into a "bon-chi" plant!

It's okay even if they cross pollinate, that won't affect the taste of the pods. The cross-pollination only affects the seeds so it's okay if you're not going to save seeds.
Hi I am trying to grow jalapeno from seeds...I get seedling after 8-10 days but that does not live longer...it just fall off from the bottom

I use ocean grown or happy frogs foxfarm soil and nutrient line. foxfarm bush doctor coco loco with an led electric sky 300 and gorilla tent all year round. nothing but monster plants

Use regular/unscented magnesium sulfate(aka. Epson salt). Worm castings are the worms poop💩
Have you tried starting ney plants from the red seeds?
Mine germinate fine from mature, red peppers.

Many many online seed stores carry it under different names. For example, Bonnie's plants offers a coolapeno at many garden centers.
how does the bottle irrigation work?
I grew some Thai chilies and the flower grew out but then they died. I could figure out if I gave them too much water or very little water. I still have the plant but too bad all the flowers fell off.
What did you put under the bags ?

On TH-cam a vlog said a hot pepper will not affect a sweet peppers In the growing season But it will affect the seeds So the seeds would not be able to be used next season You would have to buy new seeds
This is great, thank you. I’ve just planted Jalapeño pepper seeds for the first time. I used bottom heat and had the room temperature at around 80 deg F. 40 out of 46 germinated in 4-6 days.
I kept them in the high 70’s and added overhead led lighting. After 10 days (total) I re-potted in clear plastic drinking cups with holes punched in the bottom. This went really well and by 25 days (total) I re-potted the best 24 into 1 gallon pots.
I’ve noticed that they are growing upwards more at night, when I turn the lights off, so I’ve raised the lighting (1150w total) to about 15-18” above the top leaves to encourage growth in height as they are presently only making an inch maximum between leaf nodes.
The ones growing the tallest I’ve pruned, with half above the first node and the other half above the second. Since I’m only planning to re-pot the 12 best plants this will give me a good selection to choose from.
One warning I’d give. I’d read that Epsom Salts, as a foliar spray, could help with leaf curling (plus was generally recommended). I used this and it seemed to help. However, I then gave them another spray, and this time the weaker plants leaves’ structure broke down and they simply collapsed. I pruned the dead leaves and the plants are re-sprouting from the buds at the leaf nodes.

Great video! I'm using pots (mix of terracotta and plastic) to grow. How well the grow bags do from one season to the next? Also how often do you apply fertilizer?
Hi Tess, these grow bags are from this season, my other grow bags with the Roma tomatoes are from two years ago. So I don't know...so far they look good, I'm hoping to get at least 5 years out of them, hopefully longer! I didn't apply fertilizer since it was such a rich mixture to begin with, and I added the epsom salt and worm castings when I planted them. Good luck with your plantings!

The cross pollination thing is a myth. Peppers planted next to other peppers will not cross pollinate until the next generation. It would only be a problem if you had them next to each other and then used the seeds.
Often jalapeño peppers are used whole, with the seeds, to make a spicier salsa for example. Wouldn’t the seeds NOT be hot if they were from the fruit was from cross pollination with a sweet bell pepper?

All ylu do is put the green jalapeños in a drawer or somewere dark they will turn red on their own no need to keep them on the plant.
You won't get sweet jalapeño and spicy bells - that's not how it works. Only the SEEDS are affected by cross pollination.
Thanks for the feedback Chris....I'm wondering, the seeds make the Jalapeno hotter if you leave them in when eating, so if the seeds are affected, won't that in turn change the taste of the Jalapeno? Same for the bell pepper, if the seeds are hotter, then won't that affect its taste? Now I'm really curious, hope you have an answer.
@@TikkiOOO Cross pollination produces wildly unpredictable offspring seeds with cross traits that are usually expressed in the progeny plant and fruit. Anything could happen - the seeds might not even germinate. Or you could get a spicy bell or a sweet jalapeno, or (more likely) a disgusting disaster. I guess it MIGHT affect the seed flavor, but it's really impossible to predict. So if you want to harvest seeds, keeping peppers far apart really does make sense.
The red ones are hotter
Your entire discussion of sweet peppers and hot peppers crossing has no basis in science. It does not affect the present fruit. It affects the seeds within the fruit.
