Just wanted to say I watch stuff all the time to get better at ableton. I find you have the most memorable descriptions of the different tools. I was able to explain compression very easily to my friends. Thanks 🙏🏻
Nice tutorial, very useful. I have practiced since then and found a very useful application. I usually duck my bass by injecting the kick signal into the sidechain input of compressor just to prevent any frequency overlap in the low range. But I wanted to improve the process so that only the low range of the bass is compressed... preserving the mid and high ranges of the bass. hé hé that's where multi band dynamic is coming in! I inject the kick signal into my sidechain input, only activate the low band and apply downward compression on it. I usually use the sidechain monitoring & band monitoring to tweek the whole thing. And the result sounds fantastic !!! So thank you very much to allow me being more creative :)
I don't remember if you mentioned it, I'm coming back to this, but this is a great way to remove some hiss or noise from a recording! Just tried it and it sounds way cleaner than just eq and I think it might be more applicable than something like turning down transients on drum buss. Some tags so it shows up in a search might be helpful to a lot of people. Also, this is the best video I found for an explanation on multiband dynamics, great work!
Pretty sure I watch your videos once just to take in your energy (and maybe learn by osmosis) then another time to actually listen and learn. Oh and then keep them later for reference. IMO you are doing just what you should be doing at this time in your life. Lol thank you over and again. 🙏🏾
Really like watching this vid, it was great I have always struggled with understanding the workflow of this plugin in but it was very great a easier to follow with your vid so thanks!
This video was 10 out of 10. I had been very mystified about the onboard Multiband compressor but I have learned and taken notes On some key aspects of this so now I’m not afraid like you said at the end. Nice job. Please keep these up because they’re also fun to watch!
Cool video, was looking for a full overview of the Ableton Multiband, but just have to let you know that while demonstrating compression, you were actually using expansion (ratios like 1:0.70 for example), which resulted in *increased* transients rather than actually compressing down the sound.
Downward expansion: turns signal that drops below T -> quieter Upward compression: turn signal that drops below T -> louder Downward compression: turn signals that goes above T -> quieter Upward expansion: turns signal that goes above T -> louder ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (B, below): (C1, up cmpr) poor getting richer (A, above): (C1, down cmpr): rich getting poorer ----------------------- I think, I got it now. Thanks!
There's a stock m4l tool called band splitter (or something like that, I'm not at the DAW rn), which allows you much deeper control and the ability to use whichever compressor you would like to per band. It also allows you to insert other fx into each band, or more than one compressor, which can be super useful. With mbd in ableton, the only reason people open it is for ott as far as I can tell lol 👍
Well I'm a real newbie...I really want to start working with a daw...obviously Abelton live is what I'm looking at...my issue is j have all these idears in my head yet I need to get my head round the software...started watching your vids so hopefully I can armt least start somewhere...thanks for your vids .🙂
Awesome! Good luck with starting out. I have plenty of beginners content: start with Session View and MIDI after thise other things like automation and Simpler will make lots of sense :)
I understand the concept of downward versus upward compression, but I don't see any difference in what you are doing to show this? I mean, what setting do I need to change in the ableton compressor so it will be doing upward compression instead of downward compression?
Good question. I should had been more clear about this. Using the Ableton Live's own stock compressor you can only do downward compression and upwards expansion, but you can't use it currently for upward compression. But on Live you can do it using Multiband dynamics :) hope this helps!
Hi! I know in the earlier portion of the video you said “we might not remember” what you said so refer to the info view. However, what you said was that downward expansion and downward compression are in one tab and upward expansion and upward compression are in the other, but you proceeded to show that that was incorrect. Because what you showed was that downward expansion is with upward compression And that upward expansion is with downward compression. I appreciate and pay attention to your videos, so it just struck me asap. Haha all love! not sure if I’m confused or if that was an honest mistake. Thanks for all your effort!
@@LNADoesAudioStuff what do u have to say about the phase issue of ableton’s multiband? Does it matter in application? Downside? Upside? Compared to other multiband processors :)
@@LNADoesAudioStuff By the way, I really don't want to be a party breaker, but I think the first thing you did on high band was upwards expansion instead of downward compression.
@@LNADoesAudioStuff yeah it's so easy to make a mistake with this effect, that's why it's actually very useful what the did with arrows up an down on the bars and try to visualize what is happening, when I came around to do that I finally understood what is happening :D
from the books I studied, I learned that compressors are usefull when receiving a signal at -12dBFS peak and -18dBFS RMS. Here you're audio clips plays at -0.6 dBFS!?!
Aloin kuuntelemaan videota, ja mietin et hetkonen, kuulostaa suomalaiselta😁 Kävin kattomassa sitten sun profiilista että kyllä, finnish siellä lukee :D Hauska nähä, että suomalaisetkin tekee tällasta sisältöä englanniksi :)
Lovely stuff, yet again! I do have a question (it has nothing to do with dynamics though). Don't you have issues with the radiator hanging behind you when recording? I have a big metal convector to heat the room i record in (alas, it's the only place i can put my studio) and vocals tend to have a tremendous reverberation when i hit above talking decibels, giving a metallic reverb. This has forced me to work with dynamic mics only, as it's just too present when recording with a condenser microphone.
Yes not a big fan of the radiator :/ unfortunately I am renting this place so can’t move it or have it as I like. One day though I want my dream studio! 😍
@@LNADoesAudioStuff I thought as much 😅 The struggle is real! Same issue, i'm renting as well, but i guess i'll have to start thinking about making a move-able screen to place in front of it.

On the high band same thing as at 15.20, treshold is below 1. Not to complain but just to correct 'cause it's a tutorial. Interested to see more :)
