As an American watching this, I'm grateful for both subtitles and the realization that Korean 80s styles were similar to American 80s styles. Something about that makes me happy.
The subtitles are good and are quite entertaining, but they're pretty loose translations of the dialogue for the most part. For instance, when the large girl says "Hey, do I look like a walking lunchbox to you?," she seems to actually be saying, "넌 내가 뭘 닮고 그런 생각 됐냐?," or, "Hey, what is it that I resemble, for you to have that thought [that I have something to eat]?," and when the girl from the opposing gang says "Your cheekbones can kill people," she's actually saying, "네 광대뼈로 등산 가도 되겠어?," or, "May I go mountain climbing on your cheekbones?"
The similarity of fashion can be accounted for by South Korea's inundation with American cultural products starting from when the Americans formed their strategic alliance with South Korea, but which had reached pretty high levels by the 1980s -- by which time the South Korean middle class had grown to a pretty good size, and more South Koreans could afford to consume more luxuries -- which many South Korean critics viewed negatively as a form of cultural colonialism, since American cultural products were displacing many Korean cultural products.
In other words, it was perhaps not without its darker side. However, now the flow is moving in the opposite direction as well, with South Korea now exporting a large number of its own cultural products to the US and other countries, so it's almost come full circle, in a way.

This movie also shows the perpective of adults (especially the protagonist) who grew in a conservative era, struggling to assimilate to the changes in the modern social structure, and them also finding their lost youth's vigor.

Wow, this is like a flashback to an incident I haven't thought about in 50 years, when I was in college. Haha. This tactic actually works -- in a bar-fight situation, to act crazy, like absolutely out of your mind crazy, having a seizure, wild-eyed, eager to fight and kill. It scares people and they'll back off and run.
I wish to watch the whole film. Such a beautiful coming-of-age movie.
