Classic lorries ft vintage signwriting at a local truck stop (ERF, Foden, Bedford, AEC, Austin etc)

  • A mix of classic lorries and other commercial vehicles, mostly turned out with immaculate old-school signwriting, turned up for an informal lorry meet one morning last weekend. The lousy weather put paid to several expected vehicles turning up, but despite that an interesting mix of old lorries/trucks braved the elements and rumbled into the parking area outside the Midway Truck Stop.
    Classic lorry enthusiasts were met with vehicles such as Leyland Beaver (x2), Bedford TK & S-Type, various ERF lorries (including a twin-steer "chinese six" example), Foden, a Peterbilt truck, Austin LD, AEC, Volvo x3 plus others. Many of the lorries featured superb examples of vintage signwriting, I hope you don't mind that I take a close look at several instances of the traditional signwriter's art while walking about on this particular rainy day. Apologies for the sound going a little haywire, I think by mid-way the water was getting into my camera's microphone....

      Cook in summer freeze in winter , no power steering and you couldn't hear foden's band in the cab never mind a radio the brakes were a mere suggestion .

    Thanks for that glimpse of my 50’s boyhood when to me all those lorries were familiar friends and each had a face easily recognised,thank goodness so many have been adopted and cared for by loving restorers,more please.Mike.

    My dad used to drive this old stuff and take my brother and I to work with him on school holidays.We would ride in the back of a Bedford TK getting the parcels ready for the next drop. We once went from chichester to Portsmouth in the back of a drop side TK in torrential rain sheltering under a tarpaulin. Christ, can you imagine letting a kid do that now, you'd be clapped in irons. My dad called it character building. I have a vivid memory of us going down a steep hill in an austin k8 van seeing how fast it would go. It was bouncing all over the road and screaming its head off. If I shut my eyes I can still smell that old van. Hot oil,petrol,wood, leather and dirt, absolutely priceless. Went on to do my apprenticeship in the army in the mid 70s on land rovers and bedford RL's and MK's, happy days

    Love the sign and hand work on that wood-effect truck. I was a signwriter 60 years ago; not many of us left! Writing with some of those shadows is a lot trickier than it looks to the untrained eye.

      I had to retier as a signwriter after 37yrs of writing due to vinyl. Im 66 now and into different things. Blended shading was a lovely thing to do with so many colour options....ah well at least we did it.

    I am 86 years old and I spent most of my working life on trucks like these. I started in the late 1950s after coming out of the army where I learned to drive. These trucks are in beautiful condition, ours were usually well worn after long trips at about 30 m..p.h.. Great memories. Thank you for your posting. Cheers from Scotland

    I used to run a corporate chauffeur company and for a number of years I chauffeured Mrs Plant to Ascot for Ascot Week. Mr Plant had passed away and Mrs Plant was living near Nantwich. I used to see that ERA parked under an archway barn at the house.

    Most lorries represent GB former manufacturing. Remember 50/60's trunk road driving on hills when they slowed down? Brilliant restorations, unique designs.

    Lovely preserved examples there. Some types there which I drove whilst working for Bassetts of Tittensor. The old Mickey Mouse cabbed Foden with a 150 Gardener was my first truck then an Atkinson with a 180.
    Surprised not to see any of Bassetts preserved . They were always well turned out and with real gold leaf lettering. Happy days.

    Great videos many thanks.
    The hardwood was usually Keruing, I have re-decked flat semi-trailers with this wood, it lasts for years outside.
    Sign writers is an art form in itself, great to see the 'rope' effect and also remember that a lot of the gold was not paint but actual gold leaf. I have also watched sign writers apply the pinstripes by brush completely freehand. Genius.

    I'm huge fan of Leyland trucks .. my parents own Leyland Comet in 1980 in India ... Now Ashok Leyland trucks in India very silent and powerful. But I'm missing noisy Leyland 😘🔥🔥🔥

      I watched an old guy “write” the last AEC that Pembroke Transport bought (Is it sad that I can remember all the fleet reg numbers?) CDE800K. It was summer and my weekend job morphed into a weekday “gopher” for the transport manager and fitters.
      The steady handed patience and accuracy was just jaw dropping to me as a 13 year old. It’s sad that the art (like pub signs) is mostly gone. The vinyl replacement seems soulless and companies no longer seem to take as much pride in their livery as they used to back then.

    They are all beautiful, I really feel my age, I did my apprenticeship on Ford D series and Bedford tk s, I well remember taking off the cylinder head and hauling it out through the little door at the side. They didn't seem that beautiful then on a rainy winters morning!. Lovely video again thank you. Gérard.

    Brings back memories of the 70s.
    My dad used to cut up wagons in shifnal Shropshire next to wrekin construction on lamledge lane.
    If I remember correctly his name was Ron Evan's who owned the yard.
    We used to go with him n play in the trucks

    Up the A4 from Bath to London docks in dad's AEC - egg sandwiches keeping warm on top of engine, transport 'caffs', the crawl out of Marlborough, dark blue Tate and Lyle Fodens giving my dad a flash of headlights - thank you for reviving some great memories.

    That little Austin LD was a lovely surprise, looked just right as a small livestock transporter or possibly a gown van. It's always impressive to see the larger machines in preservation, it's a different level of commitment to keep them not just running but also in such excellent condition.

    I think the twin steer trucks were called 'Chinese Six' and were a bit lighter on the handlebars, and sometimes pulled a trailer, or 'drag'. Popular with hay/straw merchants.

    My first job was driving a semi in the UK, was a Guy with a 180 Gardener engine. No heater, no power steering and wouldn't pull a sleepy man out of bed. At best it might get to 40 mph. In those days 32 tonnes was the max for a semi and on one occasion, in Yorkshire, it simply could not manage a hill. I tried my best to blow the engine in the hope of getting a new truck, but the best I could manage was to break a piston, this presented no problem for our resourceful mechanic, he simply removed the offending part and I was on my way. I drove it that way for another 6 months and then my dreams came true, I got a job driving a Volvo F 88 with a sleeper.

    Great video, I like all classic vehicles, and classic diesel locomotives.
    I used to drive vintage buses, 1951 AEC Regent Mk3 with a pre select gearbox and a Guy Arab, crash box from 1955.
    Now I have a small collection of classic Japanese bikes ranging from a 1972 DT3 250 Enduro, 1973 Honda CB360 up to my newest bike, a 1994 Yamaha FZR600R, and another six bikes.

    That took me right back to the start of my (car) driving career in the 70s, me bashing up and down the A1 in my Morris 1000 sharing the road with so many Fodens, ERFs, AECs and Leylands. Most were filthy dirty but occasionally you'd see one priddied up so even the chassis and the prop shaft gleamed while the hub caps shone - a sight to behold! Now where's my copy of 'Hell Drivers"...?

    Hard to pick a favourite from that lot. Bedford S type, AEC Marshal, Bedford TK (I think the larger Bedford is a TL), Austin LD, Ford D series, all old favourites from when I used to see them in daily use when I was a kid.

    The Bedrord in the video XNG34 is a Bedford RL not a s type , both cabs were made alike but a piece of the front .

    That design of cab on the AEC Marshall (around 9 mins) dates from the mid 60s. As a kid in 71 I had the sort of weekend job that wouldn’t be permitted now helping the drivers unload at the local Firth Cleveland Extrusions plant, folding sheets and coiling ropes and stacking away the steel frames and timbers used to carry coils of steel on flatbed Bowden and York trailers helping the guys sheet down and fuelling & washing the units (not bad for a 13 year old)
    The fleet was all AEC a mix of Mercury’s & Mandators with one Marshal that started life as a rigid.But was converted to an artic (totally gutless).the oldest on the fleet was a D reg so 1966 the last one was a ‘K reg. Thry all had the“new” type of tilt cab. After the AECs they had 1 Atkinson Borderer (L reg) and then moved on to Volvo F86 & F88 . The older trucks decommissioned were dotted around the yard and “down the factory, split screen AEC 6 wheelers the latest one being a C reg. Clearly AEC saw the trend to better forward vision for drivers quite early on, Shane they had those noisy compressed air wipers tho 😆

    I used ro work at a truck dealer in the late 70,s early 80,s. Some lovely volvos, ERF,s Fodens, fords, D series, Transcontinentals, Bedford TK,s but have to say some of the worst to work on were the Leyland,s. But by l miss them now. Lol.

    My farmer uncle in the Transvaal used an Albion. Probably 1950s model. Wasn't it Scottish built?

      I know what you mean, GVU 331N was a Morris Marina estate owned by a friend's parents. Last time I saw that car was in about 1980 when it was replaced and I can't even remember what replaced it!

    I wonder if you ever see any Jensen Trucks at any of these meets I had a Uncle who worked for a Company that picked up new furniture from various companies to be delivered to Stores all round Scotland and in School holidays I would go with him and be away 3 or 4 days cat a time.

      Occasionally I have seen a Jensen lorry at shows, there's one that pops up from time to time, I think it appears in one or two of the lorry photo collection videos that are on the channel (don't ask me which one though!!!!)

    Foden lorry bed could be kerrowin but not 100 per cent sure. Used to build beds out of this hard wood in 1964 5 at burton and Cole body builders in1960s.

    Thank you for the memory’s ( 80+ Driver ) at least 2/3. Of these lorry’s i have driven in my hay days travelling from South Wales to London (night trunker well before the 7 Bridge was built via Chepstow Bridge Would take at least 8 1/2 hrs to 10 hrs the haulage company then was Entrass transport and would be in a convoy of at least 8 trucks the most reliable vehicle would leave last with a towing bar just in case one of the others lorry’s broke down on the way to London. In the winter would stop on top of a steep hill then put a plank from the window ledge to the centre of the engine and would drop off to sleep for 20 min the could would wake me up then would carry on to London. It would be tinplate up and fruit and veg from Covent Gardens. Done this for at least 5 years. the Drivers to day do not know how hard it was in the old days. Have never forgot the good old days, if you broke down there was always some one who would stop and give you a hand. But once the 7 Bridge was built it was the quick and the dead.       I am a 78 year old Diesel Dog still UK and Europe. As a lad in Cheltenham I was an all night Truck Spotter. Every Welsh lorry was in my little book.. Entress (first Magirus Deutz Wow) Blue Line. Rickets... British Steel. Edwards of Lydbrook... James Smith English Bicknor Richard Read. George Read. Etc etc Big Breakfast at The Windrush... Entress changed over at Madges. Happy Days. I love it still.... Must be mad... I wish for the job of yesterday with the lorries of today....       @@douglasvick9703 my favourite stop was the Half Acre 24 hr truck stop just out side Lydney bumped into Tom Johns when he was first started his career coming back from London to South Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 also bumped into the Rolling Stones also travelling between South Wales and London on there early careers. I was then with Entress Transport on Night Trunk from Skewen Neath S Wales.Memories of the good old days of lorry driving.🚛🚒🚚🚓

    I drove one in the 1960,s . There were no bed bunks in the unit.Slept on a board,resting from the window,supported by the engine in middle of cab.

    Nice video, but also dreadfully sad.
    I remember driving along the M6 in the 1980s.
    I was saddened and disgusted to see the penetration of foreign cars on British roads. The British car industry, the most important of its kind in the world after the war, was being squeezed out of existence. But I cheered myself up by noting the dominance in the commercial vehicle sector. Coming the other way along the motorway, were Bedfords, Seddon Atkinsons, ERFs, Fodens, Commers (now called Dodges), Leylands ( which included AECs and Albions) etc. Dennis had the fire-engine market sown up, and specialist local authority vehicles, too. Busses were in safe (that is to say "British ") hands. At least, I told myself, we still make lorries. They can't give this away. But I was wrong. Thirty years later we had no truck industry, and the posh end of the bus industry had been superseded by foreign imports.
    We all had some notion that the loss of car manufacturing had been brought about by socialist infestation of the unions in the motor industry. But the question about commercial vehicles still remains. How did we lose our own lorries and busses?

      They were an absolute health hazard to drive! I can say that after driving Thames Trader, Austin FG, GUY warrior, Atkinson borderer, AEC mandator, mercury, marshal, Commer maxiload TS3, D Series fords and that was before going on to Hino, volvo, Daf and a selection of Scanias from 110 to 144. Wouldnt drive now for all the tea in China.

    I always thought the bigger TK was called a KM ?

      Yes the old Bedfords we’re the O type just after the war 27 hp then went to A type, 28 hp more rounded front then in 59 went to the TK forward control and the J type still with bonnet jboth with either200, 220 300 or 330 cu in engine and also the S type , but poor access to engine. This later updated to the KM with either a 380 cu in engine or the bigger 466 cu in the KM was a big beast with poor controls (especially the handbrake), nearly as bad as the transmission brake on the TK with its drum then disc system(impossible to keep in working order) then the TL a lot better with the 500 cu in engine. Spent years working on these trucks good and bad memories

    We love lorries! I once read that 'lorry' is a corruption of the Laurie flat-bed rail car. Is that true? More lorries please! We also love military vehicles. Used to go to Wartime in the Vale - in the old days before you-know-what stopped everything.

    The Plant ERF LV 8-legger with refrigerated body carried the scumbled paint finish while in service - and it worked into the early 90s, I used to see it a few times per week. The steel-cabbed Foden with the ballast box is an S40; Motor Panels cab with Foden GRP nose. The curvy Albion has the Leyland-Albion-Dodge (LAD) cab; the flat-screen Albion has the Leyland Ergomatic cab - which was decidedly not ergonomic due to the offset of the steering column from the seat centreline, and rusted-out from pretty much all of its double-skinned sections quickly following purchase. The ERF twin-steer was nicknamed a “Chinese Six” as the Chinese read script from right to left… I don’t think that would fly nowadays! More load capacity than a 4-wheeler and more manouverable and less understeer/tyre wear than a conventional six, but two more kingpins and a quantity of steering joints to service than normal. The Sturge TK is a 15-tonner; I forget the K designation but they were later rebadged TK 1470 - the headlamp protector rail above the bumper was optional on all TKs but standard on the 1470. If you see a TK with twinned horizontal headlamps in a dog-bone-shaped moulding, it’s a 16-tonne KM (later TK 1630) - they usually had twin bumpers, above and below the headlamps 🙂

    Twin Steer known as chinese six much safer if a tyre blew o0ut just pull over and we had a jack and wheel brace to change our own wheels on road to get home. I drove Many different lorries 1962 till 1972 then went to USA quit driving age 80 this year 2021 last lorry i drove Foden 12 speed for W L Valance Heathfield Devon Eddy Smith 40 s of Vegas

      Foden had to change there name if they were exported to Portugal , as foden was very similar ro a bad swear word !

      I believe that one brother who created ERF went to change into using diesel engines , whilst the other brother stuck with steam power until later when it became obvious that it was out dated.
