      The owner of it requested a round sub, but I might consider doing that to another one. I do have a plasma cutter I could do it with, though a laser cut would be better.

    Kool , what’s the most efficient design you have ever worked with, in subs , I know tweeters have some really good efficiency , but 18s with large motors are pretty kool too, pro sound is efficient,or have you made custom setups that are more efficient at say 50-60 hz range

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The YOLO v2 prototypes I've built are extremely efficient and I could build them even more efficient but at the cost of durability. They wouldn't take the power, or the pressure, like PA stuff won't.

    Just out of curiosity how were the SD figures calculated? 2 10" subs one round with a large surround one square with a narrow surround. On paper (without subtracting for surround) there is 100sq in of surface area (10x10) the other (surface area of a circle = pi( R x R) or radius x radius x pi, for the people like me who think there shouldn't be the alphabet when doing math lol. or 5x5x3.1416 = 78.54. A longer coil wouldnt matter since the motor is the same, so xmax will be the same?
    I'm asking because I dont know, not because I doubt your numbers.
    Thanks
    Rich

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Effective cone area does factor in half of the surround. Regardless, the square cone does produce a higher Sd. However, cone area is not displacement. Displacement also factors in Xmax. Yes, the motor is the same but the motor isn't what's determining Xmax. Larger spiders that support more throw and a surround on the cone that supports more throw means a longer coil (within mechanical limits) will make it have more Xmax. Xmax is only as high as the surround, spider, top plate height, and coil length will allow in any given single part.

    I wounder if you sprayed anything and cleaned out the space where the voice coil goes in. Cause i had a 15in L7 that tested fine but would get hot really quick and i noticed it wasnt sounding too well. Im like yo i think i blew this subwoofer some how. Took the sub apart using a heatgun. And the coil was BLACK. No unwinding or bubbles or nothing. But it was BLACK. So im like hmm mabey thats whats causing the issue. So im like what can i do, ima just clean the gap and RE assemble it. So i get iso alcohol and force a wet Q tip down the gap and it came back all brown mixed with black. Im like gross !!! Kept doing it and just more n more kept coming up. Im like wow this gap is dirty!!! So eventually i got tired of forcing the qTip in there, so i got a paper towel, folded it, put iso. Alcohol on it and stuck it in the gap like a card, and moved it all around. Lemme tell you, i had to doit multiple times before eventually nothing was left. No black stuff was coming out. Long story short, now the sub sounds nice again despite it having a black coil. Im thinkin it got overpowered and the glue melted and some got all over the walls in the gap. That gap smelt like burnt voice coil. So yeah man. Might wanna make sure you REALLY clean a blown L7. Theyll probably have the voiccoil glue all over the walls of the gap.

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @kcemmanuel12savage75
      @kcemmanuel12savage75 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @EMFAudio

    EMF, what is your take on using a sub in a sealed box that isn’t recommended for sealed?

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would depend on the circumstances, really. An SPL application vs music will give different results of desirability. Also, the reason it's not recommended for sealed would be a factor.

    • @Bassotronics
      @Bassotronics 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A subwoofer that isn’t designed for a sealed enclosure Usually has a tighter suspension so that way if it’s put into a ported enclosure it doesn’t bottom out as easily. But if you take that same subwoofer and put it in sealed, the chances of it blowing up will be higher because it will have a stiffer suspension and being in the sealed enclosure will make it harder to push requiring double the power.

    • @EMFAudio
      @EMFAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Bassotronics What it comes down to is the proper volume enclosure, not sealed or ported. Tighter suspension just needs a bigger sealed box, looser suspension needs a smaller sealed box. The same result for ported in most cases.
