  • Amy Flagg is fondly remembered as the lady in a hat and trench coat, who quietly went about photographing buildings and recording history of the town she loved. But who was Amy ?
By the Second World War both her parents had died, plus the town she loved was falling apart from the German air raids. Her life was crumbling around her. When the bombs dropped she captured the scars with her camera.
This is a story of courage and determination of a very unique woman who captured some of the most devastating images of South Shields in the 20th century.
Narration: Janis Blower & Tom Kelly
    Music: John Clavering
    Script & Film: Gary Alikivi

What an excellent presentation. Thanks for the upload. Interesting to see on some of her documents, the way Shields was perceived (in written form) as "Sheeles."

thanks for that Brian, much appreciated. Yes Shields has been 'Sheeles' 'Scheeles' 'Shiels' now finally 'Shields' !

Great video. In the early 1990's I lived in Shields where I worked at the Gazette. I always loved the area and the people and this video along with your others brought back some memories. Many thanks for that.

I collect antique stone ginger beer bottles, and some of the finest and most sought after come from South Shields. Date to 1890-1915.

It's always interesting to see what Germany bombed, always poor areas

Sadly it's always poor areas that border legitimate targets such as shipyards and night bombing was wildly inaccurate during the early 40's.
