Hi Mand just subscribed love what you do I'm 67 yrs old and these recipes bring back so many memories of my younger days. My father was a slaughterman at an abattoir for many years as we grew up we always had plenty of meat, rabbit included Pigs feet or trotters was a favourite, sweetbreads, chitterlings and hog, and tripe and onions lovely. How do we find your husbands channel by the way, keep up the good work.
Beautiful!! I too remember rabbit from childhood. Gorgeous meat, but like you say, be careful of the bones. I cooked one a few months ago, as a stew xx
this is my absolute favourite recipe out of all the recipes you have both covered. I used to make a game pie every Boxing day instead of a joint, haven't made one for years now its only me. Lots of happy memories of rabbit pie 🙂
Now I want rabbit and it's been 45 years since I had it last as a poor, starving, student and it was delicious. I love your channel for it's honesty. Great job. Best Wishes, Brendan.
I too grew up when you just went to the Greengrocer and he had rabbits hanging up, you picked one, and he skinned it for you. My Mom made either roast rabbit, or stewed rabbit, never a pie. Here in the US rabbit is a special order at a butchers, and expensive, if you live in the Southern States they hunt rabbit, and southern fry it just like chicken, and as it tastes so like chicken it’s very good like that. I have ordered it in restaurants if it’s on the menu, always been very good.😊
I grew up in London UK and we often had rabbit pie jyst luke you made it, unfortunately rabbits are banned here in Queensland Australia where I live now but I do a similar meal to this. I cook a couple of lamb shanks in the slow cooker with onion, carrots, stock etc. then shred the meat off them with a fork when cooked. Put the this bar the liquid in a baking/pue dish, thicken some of the liquid with gravy mix in a pan in the stove. Make the pastry either suet or short crust or sometimes flakey on top and cook 30mins /180. Thanks for bringing back the memories. 💕🇦🇺
Presumably the ban is a holdover from the day’s of myxematosis(excuse my lack of spelling), but I wouldn’t be surprised if you could find some imported frozen diced rabbit meat from China especially if you have a Chinatown somewhere near your home.
I've only had rabbit a couple of times - once from a fancy-pants grocery store and the other time when my former neighbor gave us a meat rabbit he had raised and butchered. I asked my dear late wife to make Hasenpfeffer and she did a bang-up job as she always did, even though she'd never cooked rabbit before. I'm going to need to find some suet for people (not Cardinals) and some rabbit - I can probably get both from the hipster butcher here in town.
You know when you watch something and it brings back a long long lost memory of a taste, well this has done just that, my grandma used to make rabbit and to be honest rabbit gravy is a unique taste and it has all flooded back to me just now that tase a mixture of the veg and the rabbit, thanks Mand made an old lady very happy today love as ever Maggie xxx
Mum used to make a lovely neck of lamb stew, she also made a lovely rabbit stew back in the 50s and 60s. My brother and dad would not eat rabbit so sometimes she would make both and I loved both so it was difficult to decide which I wanted but rabbit nearly always won.
It must be 10 or 12 years since I last had a rabbit stew with some crispy suet dumplings, I ate nothing else other than rabbit stew for four or five days and I must admit that I was ploughing a bit by the time I finished the last of it. As for the extra pastry that you just left hanging over your dish I would normally trim it off and make another ball of pastry and roll it out and make leaf shapes out it to decorate the pie lid with. My sister and I used to fight over the resulting extra thick pieces of the pie lid, with an extra helping of thick gravy, to be soaked up with the thick pastry.
Oh dear it brings back memories of being a child in war time when there was such a shortage of food I have not had it since. I must say the pie did look very tasty as I recall it is a bit like eating chicken
Subscribed on the strength of your personality !!!!! Despite having three of the four viruses that are going around AND cancer I’m just setting off to your house from Blackpool to sneak some of your rabbit pie 😂😂😂 .Seriously though it looks delicious thank you for making this video God Bless and Happy Christmas xx
My gran used to make rabbit pie and she would put some black pudding in to add to the flavour. Love your videos and always watch out for Missy to make an appearance
We have not had rabbit for years but this week I was give a brace or pheasants . I had also ordered goat which has arrived . We had that 1/2, leg on Sunday slow roasted. Def get a rabbit next week after seeing you cook it x thank you
about 20 yrs or so back I was in a Spanish hotel buffet style meals I looked into this dish half slow cooked rabbit wow had some with mash the gravy was dark, thick, and unctuous you could almost stand the spoon up in it
I'm aged 60+++ and can't remember the last time mum or nan cooked rabbit. So this is another tick on the box for something to make for myself next year. Thank to for some inspiration for new/old ideas.
We didn’t have rabbit as kids as my mam thought we were at risk of Myxomatosis! This looks delicious though, especially as suet pastry is my favourite.
I had a pet rabbit as a child and it was huge! So huge that my parents gave it away. I was convinced it had been given to the local butchers, always had rabbits hanging up in the windows. Haven’t been able to eat rabbit from that day onwards! 😂
Omigoodness ! ! The second I saw you in my subscription box, I pictured my Pappy eating rabbit stew..... he loved it and so did his two brothers, my Uncle Tom and Uncle Wilf. Thank you for happy memory moments ❤❤
I never went hungry as a child Dad made us rabbit stew and dumplings or with mash, he caught his own rabbits and growing up can not buy it anywhere, i found it once to let my son try it, Dad was into shooting fishing etc, he was a young Dad with 3 kids in the 60's we have had game pie you name it we never went hungry as kids. Where can you buy rabbit now? Youngsters today loving macckys lol
My mom was an budding vegetarian when I was growing up, and rabbit was definitely not on the menu. As a young adult, I was invited to have dinner with friends who served 'chicken pie'. I thought it tasted off, but was too awkward to say anything, so I didn't eat much. Then they all laughed and told me it was rabbit. Ever since, I can't imagine having it. I don't eat organ meats, but I do boil (and discard) the turkey giblets to flavour the gravy at Christmas time. Your pie looks lovely, but it's funny how we get used to the familiar and have a hard time trying new things, sometimes. If you had remembered the bacon sooner, would you have browned it, or was it intended to go straight into the pressure cooker? What makes you decide between different pastry options? I only have one recipe that I use for everything, and you have such a variety of choices. Love the little black bird! Did you say you are painting? By the way, Ian, love, it's double T time, because 'time' is the third T ;)
We used to have rabbit pie every week but Mam left the bones in, I hated that bit but loved the suet crust, I'm still plagued by bones, I even got one in my smoked salmon last week! 🙈 I find every bag of flour is different, some needs more water some less xx
It literally been years since I ate rabbit pie. I used to get my rabbits from the Grainger market in Newcastle for my mother. However, my wife doesn't like rabbit pie and won't make it for me. Sad because I love it with black pudding added.
OH WOW Mandy - it's almost 50 years since I last had rabbit stew. When I left school, I worked on a farm and we were often given rabbits or hares. My Mum, having come through the War was thrilled to have them, and she'd skin and gut them and make the most delicious stew. That pie looks gorgeous, but sadly, I don't know where I can get a rabbit from these days - NO proper Butchers where I live. OH, that Bacon from Iceland - I use that - it's brilliant value and great in pies and in your 'Panackelty' recipe. I always keep a couple of packs i my6 freezer. Thanks for this trip back into my young adulthood. Take care 🙂X X
grew up on road kill hare and rabbit stews/pies, my nan and mam never shredded meat as finely as you and gravy was a lot thicker. I bought a rabbit from a shop had so many pellets, I could not cook ..shame.. Love rabbit stew, happy memories. Oh no Beddy not making your own pastry for mince pies, that hurts me to watch lol.
I made a steak & kidney pie with a pastry top. I was asked what is that sticking out? People don’t seem to have heard of pie funnels these days. Mine is plain pale green and probably older than me!
You must be psychic. I was talking about cooking rabbit and rabbit pie with my grandson today! Memories of Mum and Dad for me. There were so many rabbits years ago they ate crops so they were culled but never wasted because they fed a lot of families when meat was a luxury.❤
Reminds me of my childhood best friends mum, a farmers wife. She would skin rabbit in one move on the kitchen table. Not sure i could knowingly eat it, but they say it tastes like chicken. Thanks anyway
I'm very lucky that I have a friend who brings me rabbits from her field of rescue sheep (yeah, you heard right). More than once I've come home to find a Morrisons bag with two or three rabbits hanging off my front door handle.
The memories of grandad going out at night lamping. And we would have the rabbits hanging in the back hall. Used to freeeak me out 😂 but I never said no to the stew that followed. As it was delicious. I didn’t actually connect the dots till I was in my teens and I’ve never eaten rabbit since 😂😂 but great video Amanda as usual. Great home cooking that needs to be passed on ❤.
I grew up eating rabbits my dad use to go hunting them . I find it very hard to find it in the shops now a shame really. Remember my mother in law use to always add black pudding to it giving it a rich taste to the gravy
Not for me sorry I couldn't eat rabbit without seeing my pet rabbit years ago that just disappeared out of his pen one Sunday morning in England. We found out he had been taken and ate by some one .
I love rabbit and all game (bar Hare - they are too nice to eat). We need to eat more meat away from the usual 4 and more fish from the usual 2 or 3. This lady can cook to a high standard.... Beddy taught her well....
As a teen In the 80's and having a friend who's dad owned a farm In Durham we went out and got many a rabbit with our air rifles (these were high powered ones that did the job first time) I love steak but never been a fan of gamey meat. That crust looked amazing!
What memories I am 62 years old and I can still taste my mum's rabbit pie must make this one thank you ❤
My dad put chopped black pudding in his rabbit pie it melts and makes the gravy taste fantastic.

My mum used to do stewed rabbit, quite strong in flavour and a bit stringey but lovely. Haven't had it for over 25yrs, must try it again.
It must be 10 or 12 years since I last had a rabbit stew with some crispy suet dumplings, I ate nothing else other than rabbit stew for four or five days and I must admit that I was ploughing a bit by the time I finished the last of it. My husband is a gamekeeper so rabbit is on the menu regularly in our house
that proves my thought that Iceland has regional variations they don't sell bacon bits down south
I love a suet crust on a pie, but sadly not rabbit. Love it on top of mince for a change. It looks delicious, but I’d have to use chicken lol xx
