I also kinda feel that the redemption could have been done a lil better. However, i cut the team for some slack because the second season was cut in half, If it weren't cut, i think that the Draxum would have more time to redeemed himself and the arc would make more sense and feel more natural.

The Draxum issue sucks so much because it could have been a great moment of development for Mikey to realize that kindness doesn’t mean unconditional forgiveness and that even if Draxum made him what he is, Splinter is the one who made him W H A T he is. Wow...that was probably the cheesiest way I could ever have said that.

As someone who has grown up as a somewhat avid TMNT watcher, Rise is one of the best iterations. I'm biased towards the 2012 one because I have a lot of happy memories with my brother, but looking back more critically it wasn't as good as I thought it was. Rise not only mixes up just about everything in the formula and breathes new life into the franchise, it also has gotten me to cry real tears way to many times like god damn.

OH MY GOD YES I AGREE SO MUCH. The only thing I didn’t really like at first (I still am a bit salty about this) is that they changed the weapons, some of the personalities, and the leader. Though the weapons were a tribute to one of the older comics, so I like that now, and the new personalities were refreshing, in a way. Though the new personalities of Raph and Leo make the change of leadership an inevitability. I guess it is nice to have a series where Raph and Leo aren’t fighting every other episode though. (Like, seriously. So many episodes were about their bad relationship. It got kinda annoying) I did like some of the 2012 turtles better, (Raph & Mikey) but that’s just personal preference. 2012 Leo kinda annoyed me tho. He was really similar to my older sister, so I didn’t like him. Anyways I love all of the Rise turtles, and I’m so angry they canceled the show, because I really wanted to see more of them.

I'll admit I did question the turtles didn't design when I first saw them. Then wondered if the turtles are actually different turtles, and it turns out that was the case. Raph a snapping turtle, Leo a red-eared slider, Donnie a spiny softshell, and Mikey an ornate box turtle. There where a lot of good creative choices that fans over looked for being "too different".

Across tmnt Raphael was always trying to be the leader but his anger got in the way of being able to do it. With Raphael no longer being a total asshole and the angry one they prob just made the call to make him the leader. Also he's red so that helps as the Usa thinks that's why(even if red in all other situations means doom)

I’m actually not too bugged about Draxum getting a redemption.
It’s not like this show was an Uber-serious iteration of the turtles in the first place, and it fits in with Mikey’s more innocent and childlike characterization. Besides, it wasn’t like Draxum was much of a threat anymore after he got soul-sucked by the Dark Armor, so he gets completely torn down to be built back up into something better.
Which, tbh, is a much better ‘redemption’ arc than an assload of others we’ve seen in recent media.

I remember that when the 2012 ended I was so angry because of the finale because they just made the ending very dark instead of them having a happy ending where they are all together. So when Rise was announced, I was angry because it felt like Nick just wanted to get more profit from Ninja Turtles and couldn't be bothered by giving 2012 a good ending. I hated Rise until I watched the show and fell in love with it. I've never known that I wanted a more funny, sensitive, cute, and happy version of the Turtles. I mean in the 2012 one they didn't even cry once or had a true breakdown, they always rushed the story. Also, to your question why they made Raph the leader, in the other versions of tmnt Raph would complain to Leo that he sucks at being a leader and would say that he could be better. But I believe that the director and everyone working on it just wanted to try something new with Raph, and I'm so glad they did. Also, these are the best versions of Apil and Casey Jones. I don't that other fans hate them or all my friends hate them, I love both of them so much.

My favorite turtle is Leo, and this is my favorite iteration of him to date. I thought he’d feel lacking since being the leader has always been his most defining trait, but pulling him out of that position has made for a far more interesting character.
Also, I can’t believe there are people who take this franchise seriously.

  • @venus_vine5582

From what I know about TMNT lore is Leo was always the leader. Though when he leaves in some iterations Ralph takes over for a little bit. Raph is ever iteration that I know of always ALWAYS has a rivalry with Leo. He would butt heads with him and even fight him. He also fights with everyone and is the loner type that secretly cares about everyone. Original I didn’t like the fact that Raph was the leader because of this, but knowing how everyone actual has character development makes me feel happy. Idk TMNT has some weird lore. Some things are cannon and something are not. Also side not I LOVE the fact that Leo speaks Spanish! I don’t know why it just suits him so well. If I missed something or got something wrong please correct me. Ok bye this comment too long 😂.

The 1987 cartoon is one of the few versions where Raph and Leo don't have any sort of rivalry. Also, Raph's personality in that series isn't anything like the hot-headed, moody one he's usually given...he's the laid-back, light-hearted, wisecracker almost exactly like Leo is in Rise. The '87 cartoon was my introduction to TMNT (yeah, I'm old) so I actually found it kind of weird when I started seeing the Turtles in other media (notably the1990 movie) and Raph was always the angry one who would butt heads with Leo.

Awesome video, I’m really glad more and more folks are talking about RotTMNT. I love how many times the turtles call splinter some iteration of ‘dad’ (Donny’s fucking “papa” never fails to get a chuckle from me), so many iterations of the franchise focus so heavily on the teacher and student relationship that you kind of forget that Splinter also raised them outside of the dojo (with some rare exceptions, my brain’s file cabinet pulled up Leo calling Splinter “dad” like..once in the first Bay movie for a second, or if there’s a flashback to Turtle Tot days) also your video legit got me to submit a formal message to ViacomCBS asking foe this show to get additional seasons. Really hope they hear the fans and the show can be given another shot.

You touched on a lot of things I love about this show that don't get mentioned very often -- the absolute fun energy of it all, the wholesomeness and actual family dynamics between the turtles, April and Splinter, and my favorite iterations of Raph and Mikey (Donnie is always my favorite in any iteration though). Heck, almost all the characters just feel so fresh and exciting when they're allowed to actually be expressive and it isn't forced into depressing edginess for no reason. I adore the over-the-top animation and the blend of tech and mysticism they do, flashy superpower stuff is just big hammy fun that very rarely ever got used in turtles before.
Draxum really is a sticking point though, yeah. His whole 'redemption' thing never really sat well with me, and he's not even good furry bait either. I mean, I have a picture of Asgore for my pfp so questionable dad characters like him and Hohenheim are problematic faves, but even I don't like this guy. He's just so unpleasant.
I kinda want to go back and watch the whole series now if I even can, I saw a lot of it but not the whole thing unfortunately.

As someone who only ever watched the reruns of the 1987 cartoon as a kid, this version of TMNT being goofy sounds right up my alley! And honestly, as someone who is sick of edgelord manchildren whinging about children's media needing to be "darker and more mature" so they don't feel insecure about watching a kid's show, I will gladly embrace stuff like Rise that depicts the character hugging, saying "I love you", and just not having it with toxic masculinity!
Also, it's really funny/odd that these adults who demand children's media be "more mature like it was back in the 80s and not talk down to its audience", will in the same breath say that children *shouldn't* be watching stuff like The Brave Little Toaster because "it's inappropriate for children". (One would wonder why they would be so contradictory, but once you realize that they want it to be "darker" for *them*, and *not* children, it makes more sense.)

I honestly started to love how Rise of the TMNT basically deconstructs on who the characters are. And despite how different they are, their new personalities still stay true to who the characters are at their core. Raph was the leader, but yet he has moments where he lets his anger get the best of him. Don is still the tech genius. Leo isn't as mature as his previous versions, yet he also shown to be capable of leading the team when Raph failed. And Mikey shares plenty of moments where he becomes more wild and energetic than his other brothers. It's different, but at the same time, they still kept on who these characters are at their core, and I love that.

It's not a coincidence that everyone who really didn't have much exposure to the rest of the franchise all enjoy this show, while "fans" of the franchise hate it despite it honestly being leagues better than the other incarnations.
It's not even like the last incarnation was "dark" or "deep" at all. It was the typical 2010s trap of "let's tease a plotline for most of the series and make a series of unsatisfying episodes that technically are plot related.
We really need more fun shows that don't take themselves that seriously until they need to. It's the same reason I adored Wander Over Yonder so much. Wander is true joy energy.

To answer that question you asked: I think all of those things you said are reasons to why Rise of TMNT made Raph the leader. Red is often a color associated with leadership, He has the most character growth in all the different versions compared to other turtles, and it is something that some fans wanted to see. Anyway, I'm very glad you enjoyed Rise of the TMNT as much as I do, despite its flaws. Also, quick note... I also enjoy Donnie. Every scene he's in is a show stealer, he's basically a combination of two of my favorite character types ( Intelligent Scientist who's Probably a Little Insane" and "Snarky Guy who Overdoses on Sarcasm and Wit") and he wears purple, which is my favorite color. Rise of the TMNT Donnie is best Donnie.

Also as a semi-long time TMNT fan - it's because Raph and Donny are Fan Faves. Leo is "leader" only in name, and Michelangelo is the "party dude" (hums old theme). I think everyone like Raph because he was close to being a leader, and the movie also helped solidify him as kinda the heart/leader of the group - he's gruff and tends to run off on his own, but the others will do what they can to protect him too when he's hurt. Leo has a lot put on him, so the idea of the two switching roles isn't that surprising.

In the past incarnations, Raph would often butthead with Leo for leadership, with that usually being followed by Leo somehow proving that he's the better choice as leader.
The writers on Rise had plan for it be part of Leo's character arc. That's he's a natural born leader but has no interest in it, leaving Raph, the having to take the role he's ill-equipped for.

Honestly I hate the “it’s crap” hate towards this series
Because I know that a lot of it is the same sun and moon hate thing
Those with genuine criticisms tend to treat them as such, address them in a respectful manner, and not go on a whining fit.
It’s the drastic change (I was victim for not liking that either but I realize now that the show was good (though the superhero thing in sun and moon wasn’t something I was a fan of).
But anyways it’s that drastic change that has people unwilling to open their biased minds and give a show a chance
And it’s a shame. Because people like that who actively protest hate because it’s different are the very reason why we aren’t getting more fun and creative content
They’re the reason why we’re stuck with the same terrible redemption plots. Why everything becomes a melodrama
Actually the melodrama thing is because people lack the understanding that too serious = terrible melodrama and that the shows we praise for being serious have their share of funny moments.
I mean I’m all for uncomfortable content in shows I watch. But I don’t like when shows shove all that edginess down our throats
Part of the reason why, even though bojack horseman is most likely written very well, it doesn’t seem to be my cup of tea. Or at least it’s not gonna be something I can binge and would definitely need to take a bunch of breaks.
Next the character designs are amazing. Y’all just mean. They’re distinct and you can tell each turtle apart and can tell actually characterization about them from the designs.

OHOH!! I CAN ANSWER THE FOOT RECRUIT REDEMPTION QUESTION:
Foot Recruit was never meant to be Casey in the first place! Revealed on the podcast a few weeks ago; she was supposed to be her own character, but the crew decided it would be a brilliant idea to reveal her as Casey (which it was). It's actually really surprising because there are SO many hints through the series!! Including a hockey stick in Hot Soup: The Game and her world dominating cookie company under the guise of Grandma CJ (Casey Jones).
So, it worked out in the end, just not in any way anyone was expecting!
And! On Draxum, I've gotta say I do kinda agree, it's just that I've never thought of it that way before, not until you explained the flawed logic behind Splinter's misled thank you to Draxum! I've only had questions as to why he sees himself as the liberator for yokai-kind DESPITE the yokai absolutely not wanting any part of going to the surface. He's even a wanted criminal in the Hidden City. I was comparing him to Peridot a lot actually, but the way he behaves is more like Jasper!

      @phlpcockrell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That is pretty interesting! Though the hockey stick could have been a coincidence and knowing that.. by the time madame CJ came around and that episode was being produced they could have made the decision to make her Casey

Something the haters of Rise don't know is that the creators were literally tasked with reworking TMNT in their own way instead of copying each iterations script from script. Hence why Ralph being leader and them having original villains and so on. The end result was something amazing and pretty thoughtful. I appreciate the most that the turtles truly love each other and their April is like this amazing big sister looking out for her little brothers.

Rise of the TMNT is definitely a fun take of the Ninja Turtles. It’s a shame that there are a hefty TMNT fans that dismiss this show due to the changes alone, and sometimes for odd reasons.
Although the redemption arcs for certain characters did get rather iffy in the 2nd season. Probably has something to do with the 2nd season being cut shorter than the first one, and according to certain online sources it resulted in several episode ideas getting cut for season 2. I’m guessing it went that way due to the not so great reception it had when it got initially revealed and due to the toys not exactly selling so well, from what I’ve seen.
And I’m guessing they made Raph the leader in this incarnation to differentiate this show to its predecessors even more, with this show literally getting announced immediately after the 2012 TMNT series ended, and/or they wanted to reference the song “Turtle Power” by Partners in Kryme. It was a song made to coincide with the first live action Ninja Turtles film. It has a weird goof in the lyrics mentioning Raph being the leader.
Anyways, I’m curious to see how they’ll do with the Netflix movie. Did not notice that upcoming movie until I saw this video.

The show was cute, full of family love and hugs and support, characters make mistakes but do in the end realize it and change and this really is a good show I'm sad to see it go because of some idiots on nick deciding that it's not worth it

    Things I liked in Rise:
    1. The Turtles having another parent besides Splinter (I liked that idea)
    2. Female Casey Jones (It was an interesting choice)
    3. Demon Shredder of Mystic Power
    4. Foot Clan portrayal (they were like a Cult)
    5. A more Mystical theme rather than a Sci-fi theme
    6. April basically being the Turtles’ sister
    7. Splinter with flaws that give him character development
    8. The new mutant villains
    9. The various Easter eggs and references to previous TMNT media
    10. Bringing back some old concepts like April being black (she was black in the old comics)

One point I've seen talked about (first person I saw mention it was JaxBlade) is how the series was cut-short to make way for new projects under new names. It's the specifics on the "change in management" reason, that when new higher-ups at Nick join they like to cancel shows created by others to make way for new shows under their name. Almost like a US president.

I hate when people constantly berate a reboot that isn't a carbon copy of the original material. Carmen Sandiego reboot used a lot of found family, actions having consequences (that aren't forgiven), and wonderful reimagining of various source materials.
But just like the RotTMNT, because it "differs too much" from previous incarnations (what a lie). People berate both reboots and say that they aren't deserving of their titles in the franchise. All because they aren't the same "dark and mature" source material they think the franchise is.
Stop demanding reboots be "faithful" (which really means a carbon copy) of other parts of their franchises. Suck up that opinion and just enjoy reboots for the original takes they bring to franchises.

For me I would rate this show roughly even with the 2012 version (the only version that had me invested enough to watch to completion), and in some ways it outclasses that season. I dig the artstyle, this is probably the most like siblings the Turtles have ever behaved, this show specifically has my favorite Raph and Donnie (the latter especially is the perfect mix of brilliant mad scientist and melodramatic theater kid), it has sharper pacing than 2012, and this is the best April by virtue of the story hitting the ground running with her as part of the crew where 2012 really liked to go back and forth on her role with the team.
If this series does lose me anywhere- besides some humor that is more personal taste than anything being wrong with certain bits- it would be that some of the more recurring side and villain characters have never clicked with me, while I respect wanting to keep mostly to new villains there is a part of me that's disappointed about the lack of a few iconic mutants like Bebop and Rocksteady, and honestly there is a part of me that misses the dynamic Shredder and Splinter had in the 2012 show (ie. brothers who did fall apart because one was a massive jerk and ultimately burned the bridge permanently) and there's a part of me that wishes they could have done something similar with Splinter and Draxum instead of going the way of a redemption.

I personally believe that one of the reasons they made Raph the leader this season actually had more to do with Leo- in all past versions Leo has always been the stoic leader of the group, and it really hindered on his personality as there often wasn't much of a character beneath that, so by stripping that title away from him in Rise we get to see a version of Leo where being the leader isn't his main focus, and the newly adapted Rise Raph is able to use being a leader in a new way unseen by the TMNT franchise before. SPOILERS: also, in the new film of Rise, it makes Leo's journey of becoming the new leader that much more impactful- he no longer is defined by his title like the previous versions, but now has to adapt to fit that role while having his own personality outside of it

honestly, i feel like the only reason draxum was redeemed so that he could be helpful to the plot/give info on some of the more "mysterious" mystic stuff in the show. like, the writers needed the turtles to have an ally knowledgeable about the mystic stuff, and draxum was right there, so... (shrug). personally, i think that either adding in a new char (either a reimagining of a character from a previous version, or even an entirely new character) could have also worked- or maybe have given that redemption arc to huginn and muninn instead. (but also i just adore huginn and muninn bc i think they're really cute and funny and i wished we had more of them in the show)

Rise is my favorite TMNT version! I freaking love wholesome family shows. And there is no romance aside from the side characters Hypno and Warren and ex relationship with Splinter and big mama. Because 2012 TMNT was good. But it hurt to watch Donnie and Casey be stuck in an awkward love triangle with the 2012 April. Especially since she didn't like Donnie romantically at all.
Rise really focused on the family dynamic, they said "I love you" far more frequently with each other despite being one of the shortest series. Not to mention they are genuinely compassionate and caring to each other.
I'm not saying that the other versions of TMNT didn't have a good family dynamic, but there were a lot of repressed emotions. Sadness and loneliness were not often covered. Rise had no problem showing these very real problems that real families face. And I love that.

I personally love Draxum, both as a Villain and as the morally-questionable no-patience Uncle he ended up becoming. But his redemption was painfully rushed and they should have dedicated at least half of the season to it, instead of calling it a day after 2 episodes.
I think I ultimately would have preferred it if Mickey had left it at helping Draxum get an apartment and a job because he's sweet like that, and for Draxum to start mellowing out on his own from actually interacting with humans. Him willingly becoming the Turtles mystic adivsor could have been a great sign of character development.

I originally doubted Rise when Nick first previewed the series on TH-cam. I've watched TMNT since '87, and despite how wacky that series could get, Rise felt like too much. Over time, however, I kept seeing Rise brought up as an amazing work. In particular, Pan (RebelTaxi) praised the show often. So I finally checked out the whole thing this year and. . .yeah, it rocks!
The smartest thing this show did was set the series early in the Turtles career. Despite the "Rise of the TMNT" title, I didn't immediately recognize that this was what they were going for, but once I did, everything clicked. Raph's the leader because he's the biggest and brashest, but over time we see that's not enough and Splinter eventually agrees. Leo's natural talents make him cocky because his attitude hasn't yet been tempered by the mantle of leadership. Donnie's eccentricities run unchecked because he hasn't yet seen the wider world. And Mikey. . .is still Mikey, but that's really all he needs to be.
Then there's Splinter, who really ties the whole thing together. Once the show got into his origin, I was gobsmacked by the genius of such a simple change. It's like "Hey, what if instead of being a wise and responsible master, Splinter immediately shirked his destiny out of fear, doubt, and a bit of selfishness?" Not only does everything about the way the Turtles start this series flows from the implications of that set-up, but it also finally allows Splinter to relate to his sons in ways no other incarnation has.
And of course, April's great, the new mutants (and yokai) are fun, and the animation is phenomenal. A few years back, I doubted this series. Now, I look forward to the Netflix movie.

Thank you for the points on Draxum. While he’s a fun character to watch be evil and stuff, one thing that aggravated me about the fandom was how much they shipped him with Splinter, who he directly experimented on (although I forget if the mutation of Splinter was retconned to be more of an accident). Like, that’s not a cute ‘divorced dads’ dynamic as fans put it, that’s ‘I hate you for ruining my life and maybe I’ll put up with you when there’s no other option’. And I didn’t like how Splinter had to learn to be okay with him hanging around his son, despite their history, both distant and recent.

I think it's what the fans wanted and the Power Rangers. I always wanted Ralph as a leader since I'm use to seeing red as leader. Leo is a great leader but I always felt that Ralph would have been a better leader because it would make him more of a character than being a rough guy.

Donnie is indeed best turtle. He gets the best lines, is the most relatable, & purple is my favorite color so instant bias towards him. Heck, I was on Team Donnie for the Donnie Vs. Mikey & Donnie Vs. Raph splatfests in Splatoon 2 & I didn't even like TMNT at the time, it was more so, purple is my favorite color & he's the brains so it's obvious I must side with him, little did past me know that I'd actually watch Rise & end up favoring Donnie. It was specifically Rise themed, they had it when the show was new.
If you want to check air dates, epguides is what I use, I discovered it in like 2005 & I used it to keep track of when new Danny Phantom episodes were coming out. I still use it to this day to check back on air dates of various episodes of shows & with wonky releases, it could be off, I think it got some Darkwing Duck wrong but I'm not entirely sure on that.
Season 2 had so much missing potential, Nick was determined to shut this thing down & doesn't even seem like they were trying to hide it either. At least for things like Disney constantly hurting Toontown's potential as a game, it was suspected but not realized until later when plans they wanted to do was uncovered but couldn't because Disney didn't want it happening like they were purposefully sabotaging the game, granted it took them like 10 years to get it shut down where as Nickelodeon successfully shut down Rise real quick. Sucks because this is currently my favorite but I've only seen 3 seasons of 2012, if Paramount Plus would add the 4th season, that would be nice, still probably won't change my mind. Started on 2003 while waiting for season 4 to be added & I haven't been able to form a opinion of it yet given I'm 3 episodes in. Nick should of treated Rise better, could of done some great stuff if it was given the time it needed.

And it's because of my love for that series that I just couldn't get into the 2012 series; a "different but not different enough" sort of thing, I kept subconsciously comparing the series too much to be able to enjoy the show. Especially with what they did to Donatello, who was this calm and caring character who was also smart and skilled in the 2003 series that kid-me latched onto, and then he became April-obsessed, insecure, the least skilled in being able to fight, and the member of a horrible love-triangle in the 2012 series.
I think I actually might enjoy this new series though, and watch without comparing. Donatello looks to be even further from his 2003 depiction, but every other character is also different from their usual depictions as well. What rubbed me wrong about 2012 Donnie is that the other Turtles were similar to their 2003 selves while he wasn't.

So this show has Kuvira as an overeager hammy teenager. Amazing. Also it sounds like its leagues above the last property you talked about that had the words "Rise of" in it
