The Battle That Finally Pushed BARISS OFFEE To the DARK SIDE - Star Wars

  • As the Clone Wars began to draw to a close and the Jedi were falling deeper and deeper into corruption in order to stay on top of the separatists, many Jedi began to feel that the Order had begun to lose their way. This of course included one of the Jedi’s greatest healers, Barriss Offee. Barriss Offee became so upset and disgusted at what the Jedi were doing that she horrifically attacked the Jedi temple, and framed her best friend, Ahsoka Tano for it, leading to her being expelled from the Jedi Order.
    But which battle finally caused Barriss to turn to the Dark Side and forever turn away from the Jedi path? Lets find out…
    So the story begins in the war torn and sacred world of Phorose, deep in the Colonies region of the Galaxy.
    Phorose was home to many ancient temples and sacred locations very important to the Republic, but just like many of the other planets of the galaxy, it soon came under harsh attack by General Grievous and his separatist forces.
    As the invasion began on the surface, Jedi General Plo Koon, along with his good friend Ahsoka Tano, and Barriss Offee were sent to repeat the advances of the battle droid forces.
    Master Plo is dropped straight down to the surface of the planet with his Clone Troopers, but Barriss and Ahsoka are left on the gunship, hovering above and writing for the perfect moment to strike.
    Eventually, the two Jedi ignite their lightsabers and leap from their gunship, onto a droid tank Below. A single B-1 battle droid is terrified when he sees the two Jedi girls leap down and he screams out to his droid brothers, but Barris cleanly slices his head off, while Ahsoka chops the cannon off the front of the tank.
    Following this, the battle droids seem to have their programming modified by their commander, and Ahsoka voices her concerns about this to Barris, believing that the Battle droids have had a maniac mode activated by Count Dooku or general grievousness. Barriss agrees that they do seem far more accurate and much more motivated to push forward compared to other battle droids, but quickly warns Ahsoka that they need to find cover.
    As the two Jedi move to a nearby corner, they are very quickly corned by a large pack of Droidekas, which Ahsoka knows is far too many and will very quickly overwhelm them. Barris however suggests that they leap up to a nearby ledge as Droidkeas rarely ever think to look up.
    Ahsoka and barriss then continue rushing through the charred and smouldering rubble, with Ahsoka complimenting her friend, but warning her that there are far more droids now coming for them. This worries Barriss even further as she knows that the way this battle is going, there won’t be much left of this city to defend themselves with. Barriss is completely disgusted that a whole city on this sacred planet is being destroyed for a war she believes is completely pointless and against the Jedi code.
    Following this, things get even worse for the two Jedi as a swarm of separatist Tri-fighters immediately rush in and open fire at their location, detonating a massive blast behind them. This blast then tears a massive hole into the ground and sends the two Jedi plummeting down, deep below the surface until they eventually land in the brightly lit catacombs of the ancient city.
    Barriss immediately moves over to see if Ahsoka is ok, but she has unfortunately hit her head, leaving her vision spinning. Luckily however, her injuries are only temporary and the two quicky begin moving forward. Ahsoka is then relieved that the two are out of line of fire for the droids, but knows that they must get moving immediately if they want to have any chance of saving the city from total destruction.
    The two Jedi Padawans then begin desperately searching for a route back to the surface, but Ahoska notes that these tunnels don’t look like any natural rock formation that she’s ever seen. Barriss agrees with this and very quickly realizes that there are no tunnels. There are burrows. Something is alive down here.
    Ahsoka hopes to the force that whatever these creatures are are more friendly to the public to the separatists, and very soon after, Barriss connects deeply with the force and immediately senses something not far ahead. Ahsoka can’t feel this mysterious presence in the force as much, but instead feels a complete stillness, just like the Jedi temple on Coruscant.

She is a straightforward sociopath or psychopath hiding like most of them do by pretending to be a model individual within her community.

      I feel like its kind of dumb that they did that. She wasn't a Sith. Not even close. She just became aware of the corruption within the republic and the failure of the Jedi order. Barris wasn't evil, especially not at this point in time. It's true that this realization caused her to fall from the light, but she was nowhere near the level of corruption that justifies the writer/illustrator giving her Sith eyes. Especially at this point in time where has still done nothing dark sidey at all

      Actually she was falling to the dark side as she allowed her anger and disappointment to guide her actions, but she certainly was no sith as she had no sith master. When I see Barriss, I can't stop thinking to the great opportunity the writers lost with this character: her narrative arc deserved a better development, such as her end (which didn't necessarily have to be an evil one). They should have explored more the relationship with Ahsoka (one of the few female friend relationship beetwen Jedi!) and maybe give her a significant death instead of the "classic" turn on the dark side for common reasons.

      Then Ashoka leaves the Jedi like canon. Except instead of being alone Bariss shows up and talks to her.

    A lot of people fail to understand Barriss's actions in season 5. She says it herself that the only thing the Jedi now understand is violence. Here we see that the main reason for Barriss's fall was her guilt which seemed to have caused a deep depression in her. I believe Barriss initially loved and respected the Jedi order far more than Anakin and Ahsoka ever did. Her depression led to a hatred of herself and her actions and gradually a hatred to the most important things in her life, the Jedi and Ahsoka. She lashed out at the order and her best friend because of her internal suffering. We've only seen that anger, hate and fear lead to the darkside. With Barriss it was her guilt and regret.

      that kind of whataboutism is often used as an excuse to continue doing horrible things just because the opposition also did something horrible, if you aren't careful it just becomes an ever-expanding stream of meaningless excuses.
      just because the Sith suck doesn't mean the Jedi have to stoop to their level, especially if you know that if push comes to shove the Sith only have limited control of both the Separatists and the Republic and cant sustain the war on their own.
      Palpatine set up this unwinnable situation with the expectation that the Jedi would unquestionably fight with the Republictooth and nail, but as a famous computer from the classic movie WarGames once said "the only winning move is not to play"
      unfortunately, by the time Barriss came to this realization, it was far too late, even the Jedi Council realized that they are beyond the point of no return by season 6.

    Honestly, I wish they didn't have Barris fall to the dark side, and instead just had her story arc be more morally ambiguous. The Ahsoka on the run arc could therefore challenge us by asking the question, "to what extent is violence justified to bring peace and stop a war?" because what Bariss does is essentially the same as what Padme does in the senate episodes (in terms of trying to help the people of the republic by ending the war with the CIS), except she uses the gun (or lightsaber in this situation) instead of the pen. This could have brought to star wars the MLK vs Malcolm X debate (and yes, I know I'm greatly simplifying their ideologies, but it's for the sake of analogy). Instead, however, Bariss is revealed to just be a person who has unquestionably fallen to the Darkside and is evil.

  • @fallenprince1501
    @fallenprince1501 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I do agree with Bariss quite a nit about the Jedi having no place in war but this entire battle was not their fault. The Separatists are the one that attack the planet, its people, and set fire to cultural significance. It would be a Jedi's duty to try & save the planet from that. It would be one thing if they were on Umbara or another planet that formally allied with the Separatists, but choosing to ignore a planet being attacked & calling for aid is arguably as much of an affront to what the Order is meant to stand for as taking part in offensive campaigns in the war.

    Depression, violence, trauma, survivor guilt all these things that happen in war can corrupt the strongest person. In my opinion it's first and foremost sad to see what happend to her and she deserves mercy. She grew up in an order that says "All life is sacred and must be protected" yet the jedi are fighting at the forefront and millions of innocents die in the crossfire. No wonder how someone would break under those circumstances. I think Barriss did the temple bombings because she began to deeply hate the jedi order because it deteriorated to a slave of a corrupt and sick system. She wanted to give them a taste of their own medicine so to say. Some form of compensatory justice, because of the countless worlds that were bombarded by the republic. Like many fan theories i personally would say that in the end Barriss deeply regrets her actions, because they were of course wrong. But it's humans biggest weakness to succumb to such feelings in times of war. Like in real life some of the worst dictators in history were born in war or hunger/poverty . Jean Bedel Bokassa or Saddam Hussein for example. Bad times bring forth bad persons. I hope Barriss Offee finds redemption and peace for herself and her old friend in the upcoming Ahsoka series.

    I’m so glad we finally get a cannon explanation as to ho Barris turned to the Dark Side.
    I hope that we get to see more of her in the upcoming (Bad Batch) series on Disney +

    Had I be in that situation, I'm not saying I'd turn to the Dark Side, but I'd certainly leave the Order and focus on saving whomever I can

      unfortunately it seems like everyone who grows disillusioned to the order turns to the dark side: dooku, krell, and barris. and they all end up doing terrible things that end up killing people. dooku and barris were both good Jedi who were compassionate but they turned to the dark side because of how bad the order and council was. I guess ahsokas the exception

    Bariss should have just left the order but instead resorting to extremism

    • @crazy13alex
      @crazy13alex 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That wouldn't have *changed* anything. Extreme or not, Bariss believed that action was necessary to get her point across. Look at Dooku, Pong Krell and Bariss Offee; anyone involved with the Jedi Order believed that it HAD to change or disappear. Those like Pong Krell predicted it would, whether they were involved or not. Telling Bariss "you should have just left" is like saying "you should have just kept your head down and let the Republic and Order fall. Nothing you do can save them."

    I kind don’t like that Krell is revealed to have turned to the dark side in the Umbara arc. It gives the Republic a pass. Instead of coming out of the episode thinking that there are some Jedi that are real bastards, Krell is actually a sith and thus the audience doesn’t have to face the reality, that even heroes can be villains.

    Losing faith in the Jedi Order makes sense, but framing Ahsoka is just unforgivable...

    • @asheer9114
      @asheer9114 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't forget that Ahsoka did have two enemies within Republic ranks... first was obviously good old Palpy... because for him Ahsoka was a hindrance keeping him away from Anakin and second... was snarky Tarky who couldn't forgive her a humiliation at the end of the Citadel arc when she reused to give him her part of the Hyperspace coordinates she learned from dedceased in the Citadel Jedi Master.
      Barris was just tragic victim of the Order's pride and hipocrisy... and let's not forget Windu's absolutely infuriating speech when he acted all high and might toward Ahsoka and not a single "I'm sorry Padawan for every thing what happen"... (that's why for me that pompous d*ck is PERMANENTLY DEAD and should NEVER comeback to the franchise)...
