This song is a great example of how "heavy" doesn't have to mean "fast". They take their time, and it works magnificently.
Alice in chains my favourite Seattle grunge band top of my list underrated with another phenomenal Seattle band queensryche 2 bands in my top 10 of all time for me as a metal guy these are killer bands

Jerry Cantrell is one of the best songwriters ever, all 3 of the songs he wrote for family members are just stellar, sunshine for his mom who had passed away, rooster for his pops, brother for his little brother David, all fantastic songs. Crazy that on the dirt album alone he wrote rooster/would?/them bones/down in a hole. One of the best bands ever, long live AIC

My dad served in Vietnam, 2 tours as a special forces black beret with a Naval Rivereen unit tasked with interdiction in the Meekong delta. This song captures the intensity of what its like to have grown up with a Vietnam vet.

They BROKE OUT, with the SEATTLE "GRUNGE BANDS" but they were the darker, HEAVIER of all the SEATTLE bands from the early 90's
They have a lot of elements of country, metal, rock, blues, etc... Unique and special band that made the world a better place. It is all you can ask for.
Yeah, no doubt, they were by far the more "Metal" of the Seattle grunge bands who "made it". But there were a lot of good bands, Hammerhead, Seaweed, Metal Church that never really got that big. Sir Mix A Lot even. Sadly known for a novelty song but listen to Iron Man (maybe the first metal/rap song), Posse down on Broadway ... Well most of SWASS. So much talent in the area. Oh, Mother Love Bone! Basically Pearl Jam and Soundgarden together with a different lead singer. Andrew Wood was amazing.
Next Alice in Chains song: "Man in the Box." A must hear - IMO this was the song that really jump started the Seattle grunge explosion. Interestingly, AIC is not classic grunge sound, but more hard rock/metal with a groove.
Tbh there isn’t really an actual classic grunge sound, it was more of a movement, it’s why the big 4 all sound completely different but are all considered grunge, there really is no specific classic grunge sound. AIC and soundgarden too leaned much more into the metal side of things

I am just 32 but am close to some people who served in Vietnam. My mom's ex husband is a good friend of mine, he had to do 3 tours in Vietnam. The day he graduated high school he went and joined the army and he told me that was the worst thing he ever did.

I didn’t like Alice In Chains when they first started out at all. About 2 years ago I saw a live performance of their song “Love Hate Love “ live at the Moore. It’s easily one of the best live performances I’ve seen by anyone. They are now one of my favorite bands. The whole band is great but Lanes vocals in that performance blew me away. I would love to see you guy’s react to it 😊❤

We'd park in his alley to go to Kinko's to print our papers and assignments. I believe he was 6-2, no? It's so sad at over 6' he was found at barely 90lbs. I literally didn't know that was possible to get below 100. Such a sad story.

Saw them in 2007 in Tulsa, Ok at the Cains Ballroom. They did a 2.5 hour acoustic set with their current lead singer. Jerry's father was alive and well.- sitting towards the edge of the backstage all night just smoking cigarettes and Budweiser watching his son and the band play. They ended the night with this song. Hell of a show!

They were THE top target of the Viet Cong in a battle.

Guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote ROOSTER about his father's experiences in Vietnam and when Jerry saw his dad in the audience at one of their shows when AIC opened for Iggy Pop, and Jerry asked Layne (and the guys) to play ROOSTER and they did. It was the first time Jerry's dad heard Jerry's music and knew that his son understood him through that song. It brought Jerry and his dad closer together. And Layne had a vital part in that reunion. (Meanwhile Layne's own biological father was an opportunist).
Jerry's dad was nicknamed Rooster when he was a kid and his hairstyle resembled that of a rooster comb. Although, maybe he used rooster as a call sign during his military career. But he didn't earn the nickname in the military, he had the nickname back when he was a kid.
Jerry Cantrell, Sr had multiple tours in Vietnam and like most Vietnam vets, he didn't talk about it. The most he ever said about it was at the beginning of the official video for ROOSTER which he agreed to be a part of after hearing the song. Like all kids who hate their parents, Jerry Cantrell was no different. He was staying in a small guest room in Chris Cornell's house (Cornell was married to AIC manager Susan Silver) and the guest room had a tiny window. He was staying there and thought about what his dad may have experienced and wrote the lyrics.
They demoed ROOSTER and WOULD? when they spent two days working on the acoustic songs for the SAP EP. The songs on SAP and those two songs were demoed using the money Cameron Crowe gave them for recording WOULD? for the SINGLES movie. Layne sang the hell out of WOULD? and ROOSTER.
The harmony in the beginning and end on the album is Ann Wilson of Heart, but Layne does the harmonies on the official video and live versions perfectly.
The Unplugged show in 1996 is so heartbreaking to watch because he was deep in his heroin addiction (and yes, I know he was doing other drugs on top of Heroin). His liver was damaged from the years of drug use. He was just high enough to do the show so he didn't get dope sick and chase away withdrawal symptoms. He was such a ghost of himself during Unplugged. (Of course, Jerry had food poisoning) All Jerry saw when he looked over at Layne was his best friend was going to die soon due to the path Layne had taken with his life. That show was filmed in April, 1996, premiered in May 1996. They did four shows with KISS in June-July 1996, after which Layne survived an overdose and became a recluse. After that, it was a six-year-long slow suicide.
With Unplugged... Sean Kinney (drummer) and Mike Inez (bass player) argued with Jerry about whether Layne could even pull off the high notes in some of the songs in his condition, which is why Jerry gave them that “I told you so” smirk after Layne hit that long, high note in DOWN IN A HOLE. He did the same thing again when Layne hit a high note in ROOSTER.
Layne was one of the few singers who was always better live than studio version. The fact that Sean and Mike didn’t have any confidence that Layne could do the show and Jerry being the only one that knew deep in his heart that Layne could do it because Layne had done so many things against the odds over the years no matter how high he was at the time. When Jerry needed him to be there where it counted, Layne always pulled through.
Knowing how he sang ROOSTER in Tilburg, The Netherlands, in 1993 when his “yeahs” and screams were so loud and high I’m surprised the rafters didn’t come crashing down around him and then watch him sing the same song so low-key on Unplugged knowing he could do to the song what he did in Tilburg is heartbreaking. Knowing he initially sang the hell out of WOULD? on the official video and album and seeing the end of WOULD? on Unplugged . . . and knowing how deep into his addiction he had gotten by that point is heartbreaking.
The entire show was a success because Layne DID have a powerful performance despite his condition. He proved to his cynical bandmates that he could still sing the high notes and he pulled it all off beautifully while the same four guys (Metallica) who had mocked him for his addiction sidelining Alice In Chains from ever doing extended tours back in 1994 sat in the front row. The mistakes he made screwing up SLUDGE FACTORY (and I think he screwed up GOT ME WRONG once or twice, but Toby Wright didn’t keep that in editing) were endearing, at least to me. They didn’t take away from the performance, it added something to the performance that, had it been removed after everyone had seen it, wouldn’t have made the show what it was.
That line "they spit on me in my homeland." TV News anchor Walter Kronkite basically told the American public that we lost the war and between that and the college kids (who went to college to escape being drafted into the military) would protest the soldiers coming home. They would do protest rallies at the airports and protest the returning soldiers by spitting at them, throwing urine and other stuff on them. An uncle of mine drove a supply truck in Vietnam (to this day he won't talk about his experience). A family friend of ours said that he and his buddies came home, saw the protesters at the airport, and re-enlisted because it was safer in Vietnam than in the US with the protesters. At least in Vietnam, they knew who the enemy was. I'm NOT saying Vietnam was anything the US should have ever been in. I'm just relating stories of people I know who served there.
Layne's story is more tragic and haunting because you can actually watch and hear him deteriorate over the 12-year span: from the mild use of drugs in 1990 all the way through 1996 when he was deep into a heroin addiction to dropping to 90 pounds by 1998 to 86 pounds when he died in 2002. Layne kept his humor and wit even to the end of his life.
Layne was so much more than his drug addiction. He stacked his own vocals with melodies and harmonies underneath. He was able to come up with lyrics and harmonies off the top of his head. He knew that Jerry Cantrell was playing with the wrong people and gave him contact info for Sean Kinney and found out Sean Kinney was dating original bass player Mike Starr's sister. He wrote the lyrics for the original songs he sang on Mad Season's Above album and drew the cover art for that album. Layne was a genius in his own right. He was able to figure things out in a snap off the top of his head. Layne just had his demons. At the age of 34, he looked more like an 80 year old man. He knew he screwed up, between the drugs and his own depression and then his former fiancee dying, Layne just couldn't find a way to dig himself out of his own mess and at the end with his teeth problems and organs failing on him, he gave up trying. He lost sight of who his true friends were and who was using him. He was never going to give up the drugs. Instead, he tried to attain the same high he felt the first time he did drugs and could never achieve it.
Layne encouraged Jerry to sing more, after all, they were Jerry's lyrics he should sing them. Vice-versa, Jerry encouraged Layne to play the guitar which is how you get Layne playing guitar on HATE TO FEEL and ANGRY CHAIR as well as I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING on the Mad Season above album. Jerry encouraged him on the guitar and was proud that Layne grew as a guitarist. Though, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine taught Layne more chords than ANGRY CHAIR and HATE TO FEEL.
The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. (And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other. The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team.
Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period.
Layne had done so much for Jerry, giving him a place to live, money, clothes, food, guitars and gear, a band. But getting a front-row seat to watch what had happened to Layne over the years, Jerry had to watch his best friend deteriorate in a span of 12 years (1990-2002), and Jerry couldn't do anything about it. Jerry had talked himself blue in the face but Layne didn't want help. Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway."

One of my favorite bands ever and I'm from old school rock...Led Zeppelin , Black Sabbath etc. Layne's vocals drew me in from the first word I ever heard then I realized this whole band was awesome. Should give Love hate love live at the Moore a listen.

Such tragedies that happened to both Layne Staley (OD'ed) and Larry Cantrell's (Guitarist) father, who this song is about..."Rooster" was the nickname for many machine-gunners in Vietnam because the muzzle-flash of the M-60 machine gun looked like a rooster's tail...and they were top three in being targeted by the Viet Cong (after officers, which is why many didn't wear their rank on the battlefield)...Medics, Snipers, Machine-gunners...

This one hits me pretty hard every time. My Dad was a Vietnam Vet. And he one talked to me about it one time before he passed away last November. And he definitely dealt with some inner demons from that war! But I have loved AIC since they arrived on the scene!

The late Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley put in a stellar performance on this track... the song itself was written like the war experience for a deployed Vietnam vet - Jerry's dad Jerry Cantrell Sr. ('Rooster') enduring wave after wave of attacks on the frontlines... watching his fellow soldiers die or get maimed by enemy fire and weapons...
Guitarist Jerry Cantrell recalled his parents splitting up because his dad was so traumatized w/ PTSD ("Shell shock" back then) from the Vietnam war... His mom died, and he eventually reconciled w/ his dad (who appeared in the music video).
People today forget about the damage that the Vietnam war did to the American psyche back then - the idea of US armed forces losing a war in the 70's and being thrown out of Vietnam was unthinkable to war advocates... The atrocities committed by US soldiers was abhorrent to war critics... So many young Americans killed or wounded in the war, coming home and denied veterans' benefits ... And then, President Nixon being kicked out of office after the Watergate scandal and being pardoned for his crimes while in the White House during that era... People were still talking about that time well into the 90's.
Let's be honest tho, Watergate is like playing dolls compared to what's going on currently; and Nixon practically a choir boy.

When I was deployed, we used to listen to this song (especially Jar of Flies) before missions. The Carabinieri who went on missions with us likeed to listen wierd Italian music :) But, they had our back when it counted!!

I remember Vietnam..... but I was just a child at the time. My family fought in WWII, so I had a metric ton of respect for our soldiers. Vietnam changed everything, including my own mindset towards warfare. It's hard to blame our soldiers for what they did over there, because they were put through a war they were simply not prepared properly for. Anyone would "snap" given the circumstances. As mentally strong as I am, I likely would have snapped under those conditions.
I have some older friends (who would be the age my parents were at the time, though I never knew my parents)..... and they refuse to talk about the war and what they experienced. Given what I know from history books, I honestly can't blame them.

We need to realize too this man saw this stuff for real, his buddies dying and he survived physically. Mentally I couldn't imagine the anguish and guilt this man has and probably always will suffer to some extent the rest of his days.

Terrific review guys. Great insight for a first listen. As you noted, Jerry wrote it and it was obviously very important to him, which is why he had Layne sing it…..he wanted it to be perfect…and you guys pointed out how Laynes amazing and unique vocals are one of the main reasons why this song is so incredible.
Jerry told an anecdote of his father coming to the venue where they performed Rooster when they first wrote it. And he remembers his father crying during the performance. And giving his sign of approval. Mr Rooster most likely suffered from severe PTSD and their relationship was strained with his father for the longest time before that.
Fell in love with Layne's voice from the start. His can sing like a hard ass to singing beautifully angelic - so unique and amazing.

Solid observation about Layne's vocals, he's not fatiguing to listen to in his harshness or his grit. His Mother described his voice as razor blades wrapped in marshmallow. He seemed to lean into the r-colored vowels to control bringing notes down and also round them out, make them sound warmer. I'm not sure if there's a lot of information of how much of his vocal style was intentional or just natural, maybe a bit of both but he's standing the test of time because of how complete he is as a vocalist. Would love to see reaction from songs from the self-titled album (aka Tripod). I feel like Grind, Brushed Away, Shame in You, and Over Now get overshadowed. Some of their best songwriting is on Tripod imo. Keep the Alice coming please ❤

I served in iraq back in 06 our main AO was along the Euphrates river in Iraq we would often pull night dismount patrols through the tree lines Palm groves to set up IED ambushes along the river and the MSRs It often gave me that Vietnam vibe because of all the palm groves along the river We lost people But I never felt we had it as bad as those Vietnam guy's. This song still brings back those memories

Had a mate whose dad went to Vietnam and never lost the habit of getting up every 2 hours. He would justify it by having a smoke something they didn't do in the bush. he was a scary guy.
"Again" is another great one...so many.
You should check out WASP Heavens Hung in Black. The title is a quote from Abraham Lincoln about the battle of Gettysburg. He said "tonight heaven is hung in black" due to all the casualties. The song is about an American soldier in Iraq who is dying. He is at the gates of Heaven and St Peter tells him he can't come in because there is no more room. Give it a listen and see what you think.
The Rooster was slang for a Medevac helicopter taking dead and wounded from the battlefield.
Damn! As many times as I've heard this song, I've never seen the video! A lot of men came home fucked up from Vietnam. I still know a few that have never healed from their experience, and they probably never will! 😞I still remember the first time I heard AIC, 1992. I was in the Air Force, and my supervisor had a boom box on the middle seat of the work truck blasting the cassette, lol!

Nutshell is a song that I never liked listening to with other people around. That's an alone song for me. 1 of the few songs that gets me choked up.

Good afternoon to you from Ukraine. I personally know people who were at the front...who experienced terrible events and saw the death of their comrades with their own eyes. The boy survived after being hit by a shell on the train and said that half of their group was torn apart. All he thought about was why he survived. I saw his eyes. It's simply horror! I wish all of you don't know what war is like personally. The song is very cool!

All my grandfather's served. None of them were sad about that. After the Vietnam war, they were angry about how service men were mistreated. The real crime was perpetrated by those who benefited off the deaths of thousands of men fooled into fighting for a country that never cared about the loss of good men.

Im a marine veteran fought in the vietnam war this is a pretty accurate description of the war. We were spat on and told to not wear our uniform at the airport adviced to wear civilian clothes when we came home it was a horrible way to be welcomed home no parade's just met with hate!!!
I'll disagree with you on this not being as emotional as thought-provoking. My father's also a Vietnam vet, so maybe I'm seeing it from a different perspective than some other people might. But for me, this song - and especially this video - is brutally emotional. I really can't get through it without crying.
The video was very metaphorical the end with the wrecked car sitting broken at home plus Layne killed this tune I got to say I am sure Layne was aware it was a important song to Jerry thus the band and it shows awesome work and lyrics style vibe of war.

It is a book that's like one of your favorite movies. You will never forget that movie nor will you forget what you read in that book. BTW, watch out for those chiggers.
Jerry Cantrell wrote this song as a tribute to his father (older man) and other veterans who served there. Jerry Cantrell Sr. Sr. served in the military during Vietnam War. Sr.'s nickname was "Rooster" because his hairs back from his head stand up like a Rooster's tail or feathers. I think that Sr. had dangerous missions (Recon) searching for the enemy during the war.
No, it wasn't Sr. whose leg was damaged during the explosion. It was one of Rooster's Platoon member.
