The very first song I learned to play back in 1962 at the age of 8 years old. I could hardly reach over the guitar to play. It hurt my shoulders, arms, and fingers. My guitar teacher made me learn the notes and the basic open chords, then taught me this song. I loved the song and was excited I could play a whole song. 60 years later I still play it on my Fender Stratocaster and still love it. You did an outstanding job here refreshing my memory.. Thanks so much!!!

I have been picking this tune out with just single notes, no strumming, for over two years now. Have tried several times to add in some strumming to no avail. Thanks to your excellent detailed instructions I have finally succeeded. Well done, sir.

I just wanted to say thanks! I learned this song a few years ago using single notes, good enough for people to recognize, but I knew it wasn't right. Anyways, I've sat here most of the day, but I finally got it, & now I feel like a real guitar player! Thank you!

I've always loved this song. I'm in my 20ies, so I'm glad my mom introduced me to so much music when I was little. Only recently I took up learning to play guitar so I could accompany myself all the songs I'm always singing when I'm alone. Since I don't own a piano anymore I've come to realize life without playing music is just not right :) Thank you for teaching and greetings from Germany.

Thank you. What a great, complete lesson, no nonsense no time wasted. I love the last "Mother Maybelle " (sp?) version -- and will be so happy when I can play the first, simplest version, which is so beautiful already. ... Thanks again. Keep'em comin'.

Thank you very much mister! You made this pretty easy for a beginner like myself. I've been on it for about a week now and just cleaning it up with your recommended up strumming, sounding pretty good.
I love my banjo more than anything, but had to sell it. But a friend of mine gave me an old beat up Harmony guitar so I could have something to play! I will learn everything I can til Im blessed with another banjo! Thank you again!

    Hi Bill
Terrific thing, like everything you upload to youtube.
As I saw took my acoustic guitar, and while he was playing that song, with your explanation, I polished all the missing details.
I thank you most sincerely for your job is to spread the music worldwide and in this case is to receive only a joy for the spirit doing a good deed.
A big hug, and may God bless you always, Jose Luis from Buenos Aires.
(I wonder if you have any books to play banjo and / or DVD, instructive, by Ebay?))

I decided this had to be among my "must learn" tunes. Give me a few weeks and I think I may have it.

Well, my singing isn't that great, so I'll just concentrate on the picking.

+williamanesbitt Back in the 60s the Lilly Brothers recorded a version, and it was a vocal.

Cool. Sounds like Jimmy Martin's version of "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain"... they would alternate between A and D. With Crowe working the tuners... nice.

we use to do it in C then move it to G and every time we changed we would pick up the speed and the people loved it

I can play the song from front to back picking out each individual note and it sounds better than yours and is much simpler. You people out there just look for a simple tab and you'll have more fun!!!!
