    I always found it strange that the symbol of independence for children was the bicycle.
    Meanwhile, I could never go anywhere because everyone was 20 miles away.
    I now see that everywhere should be built with mixed use buildings trams and dedicated separated bike paths and am currently looking for such a place to move to.

      Well having a bike still allows kids to move around with more independence, but for those kinds of distances public transportation is probably useful as well. If it allows kids to get to a train station or bus stop, and get to their destination in that way, that's also a win. But you're absolutely right that a terminally car infested society warps and distorts land use and distances in a way that is really hard to fix.
      Cars cause problems that only cars can fix.

      @cityforall If I could make a suggestion, then it would be to go into more detail. Basic urbanist videos abound these days on TH-cam, but detailed and in-depth videos that talk about the pressing issues of our time (gentrification, rehabilitating suburbia, how to successfully oppose NIMBYism, the right transit for a community, etc...) are, unfortunately, lacking. Even shorter videos that deal with specific issues or good/bad urbanism in different localities would be great too... Although I do, however, understand the constraints of life, so perhaps this is more of me projecting my urbanist content wishlist then anything else haha. Your tram video rocked btw and it's so great to see more urbanist content, particularly about Eastern Europe. Wishing you all the best mate 🥰

    I am 47 have not owned a car in over two years I rid a bicycle everyday for transport I live in central Alabama it is easy oooh the money I save $700+ a month

    I was thinking trams r better than the metro- the metro is more confined- with the trams u can enjoy looking outside the window.
    The underground is faster but I guess trams r better. Trams n train to connect the three, four countries together.
    As I said need to sit with everyone n talk about everything.

      Trams can be pretty fast if you don't let cars get in their way and if you tweak traffic signals to give them priority. The problem, as usual, is car traffic.

    There's another less often mentioned additional benefit for cities that substitute public transportation for more parking space in already congested car-centered urban spaces: increased revenues from taxes instead of more hidden subsidies for private car owners and auto manufacturers.

    cycling is so much better than driving because I've never read a news article that says "person demolishes building because the crashed into it on their bike"

    Enrique Peñalosa is the worst example for City transportation. After 8 years being the Bogotá major in Colombia, the city is a disaster, his BRT are collapsed, and he has interrupted the metro project TWICE, lately because of the media pressure he had to accept the idea of a Metro, but instead of making it the main transport system of the city, he transfomed it to feed the BRT system, he decided to change the underground metro for an elevated metro, an structure that will divide the city in two parts that passes through an small avenue, the buildings will have the elevated metro structure 5 meters away from their windows. He do not care about "Rich and poors" he only cares for his bussiness with Volvo and their BRT.

      What is wrong with elevated metros though? Major cities like Tokyo, Chongqing, and Bangkok have them, also here in Manila, and everything functions just fine. They're also cheaper in terms of construction and maintenance costs.

      @@ianhomerpura8937 I myself worked on the elevated train project. And the one in Bogotá has nothing to do with the systems you mention. The avenue where they designed the viaduct is 40 M wide, and the stations are 30 M wide. The stations will be located every 2 km. BRT will continue to exist under the viaduct, indicating that the idea of ​​the train is to feed the BRT.
      Finally, the viaduct is so massive, and the avenue is so thin that for more than 10 km of the line it is necessary to eliminate the private car, making the avenue only for the BRT. I worked as an urban analyst, and all the economic models shown an evident devaluation in the price of land since the project was known. It is an urban disaster.
      I don't know if you have seen how latinamerica is in terms of criminality and social conditions, under the bridges all across the city there are homeless people living there, here we have high levels of criminality close to these urban barriers, now imagine a bridge but 20 KM long in the core of the city in some of the most dangerous zones of Bogotá.

    Forgive me, I'm a language teacher and I can't stop myself. Your English pronunciation is really excellent. It really is. With one glaring exception. Your pronunciation of 'v' especially at the beginning of a word is wrong. You consistently pronounce it as a 'w'. Saying 'wehicle' instead of 'vehicle'. (The 'h' is normally silent in that word by the way, so it's 'vey-icle'). Remember 'v' and 'w' are two completely different sounds and not interchangeable. A 'vet' is not the same as 'wet'. It's worth working on because it lets down your otherwise outstanding pronunciation.

    Driving is not only for transport but also carrying things. How would you go bbq at the beach without carrying the grill, canopy, food, chairs, charcoal, plates, table?
    Costco shopping is impossible.

      With that much stuff to carry around you might as well just rent a van. And unless doing all of that around all the time is your job, you'd only bring them all with you on special occasions, once a while, owning a whole car and constantly paying upkeep and maintenance cost just for trips you do occasionally does not sound like a good financial decision.

      Cycling can be a solution along with others!! it’s quite usual in some parts of Europe to see 80 year old men and women still cycling, because they never gave it up, cycling to buy some things from the market, or the store, friends and families cycling together on the weekend to villages on the bicycle paths and sitting together at a restaurant or walking with an ice cream cone after they bicycle. When I lived in Western Europe, it was easy for me to be in fit without paying extra for a gym.

      Meant to write, it can be a choice for other people. If you have just availability for a car dependent society, then people who either cannot afford, or can afford a car, but cannot drive for various medical reasons and other reasons, then you have part of the society that can’t participate as easily plus, even if you can drive if you get part of your exercise from cycling and walking, you can easily not have to use part of the time for a gym. !!:)

    3:44 Cycling is not zero emission.
    You need to produce the bicycle and parts for it maintain,and that has emission.
    Also the biorobot, that makes it move , has extra emission due to the extra activity!

    This video is absolute cobblers, every day is a sunny day it seems, where are the images when it's pouring down with rain. Also, where are the images when trying to cycle through the streets of Glasgow when there's a couple of inches of snow falling during rush hour, or it's 5 degrees below zero.
    And your claim that people driving their car to work don't want to do, that is an out and out lie, ladies in particular do prefer to drive themselves rather than stood on a tram next to some pervert, or some headcase.
    And everyone is fit and healthy and not a hint of disabled people in your world.
    I have had the experience of dealing with local authorities over plans to extend the Supertram system and quite simply they are liars, they tried to sell us the same story as yours and intentionally withheld important information.
    Your trying to flog a sunny picture, which is utterly misleading and that is an absolute disgrace.
    Now get real and get honest and convey the truth about your dreamland.

      Firstly, you couldn't be bothered to take the time to address even one of my perfectly reasonable observations.
      Secondly, I would not be a liar and use lies to support a proposition.
      Thirdly, I do not inhabit yours or any other's idealistic dreamland.
      Fourthly, I live in the real world, where circumstances are as outlined in my observations and where nation economies have to succeed. Oh yes, and where people have to work.
      Fifthly, this week's report about UK government's £2 billion grant for "Target to boost walking and cycling in England" has spectacularly failed. May I suggest just two reasons for that farago, er well, people don't want to do it and people will most certainly not do it in the pissing rain.
      This was exactly the same when the government coughed up good public money to encourage exercising after the UK Olympics. Another failure.
      Also, all of the revenue raising clean air zone schemes are deeply unpopular and will in due course be returned to the original road layouts, indeed some have already.
      No 6, I used to enjoy my cycling and walking when I chose to do them, not when some dreamer in a local authority wants me to.
      No 7, due to certain health issues, my friend's cycling days are over and he is disabled. Just a reminder, nothing in your sunny sunshine video about that.
      So that's my response, something I have taken the time to compile. I haven't done the puerile thing 'oh, well what would you do then'. Pathetic.
      In essence, you do not have a response to my observations. Dear nameless person.

      people all over Northern Europe use bikes to cycle every day. doesn't matter if ti's 28C or -10C, snow, rain, winds that blow your bike of the road, we have it all.
      if you think Denmark or The Netherlands are some kind of tropical paradises you should open a book some time. (in The Netherlands ii rains around 190 days a year, so halve the year)
      and ladies don't have to choose between using a personal metal cocoon or being assaulted in public transit. most public transit a completely safe (probably safer because people who drive those vehicles are better drivers then most of the people in personal cars)
      they also can choose to cycle, where they choose their own route and speed. so if the see someone they don't like they go another route.

    The video is kind of biased, portraying an ideal utopic world... that does not exist.
    Cycling is great and it can serve you great in the city, I myself ride my bike as a means of both entertainment and also a convenient way to commute. However, cycling has limits. First, not all people are body abled and in physical condition to cycle and for them car may be the only viable option.
    Another problem is, if you need to go at a great distance, esp. if you live in a big city, like me. For the longer distances cycling is not really an option - you need public or other way of transportation.
    Trams are not less noisy, as the video suggests, on the contrary. They are very noisy and causing vibrations. They are still a great option, but they also have cons of their own.
    And "climate change" is very controversial subject, to say the least, esp. with climategate and some other revelations, but I don't want to go too much into politics.

      No, this is not portraying an utopian world, !!!!!! the videos, showing a world that already exist in parts of western, Southern and some of Eastern Europe.
      I know because I lived and worked overseas in Germany for many years and to me it was quite a pleasure when I didn’t have to drive to walk and cycle to get around either to work when I could or bicycle to the differen Villages with my friends or even to the market, where the farmers froth or vegetables, and they’re wonderful cheeses
      I was over 40 years old and sometimes ate a lot of rich foods, such as chocolate croissants, and Rich cheeses but with all my bicycling I didn’t gain but lost weight.
