    The magic of befriending a raven or a family of ravens is they have been recognized as one of the few species of bird that have facial recognition. Meaning these ravens that look for you will pass on how you look to their children, then grandchildren, and so on.

    • @jerrybartlett312

      And crows as well

    • @chitinskin9860
      @chitinskin9860 5 ปีที่แล้ว +385

      "Few" may not be the best word. Nearly all birds are capable of facial recognition. What makes corvids different is that they actively use this to their advantage. Most other birds will just use it so that they know to be less alert when you are around vs someone else, but corvids see familiar faces being kind as an opportunity to get stuff, and sometimes will encourage you to continue by giving you various gifts ( at least in the case of crows). This can also go the other way, remembering a face that they don't like. Not just corvids, but nearly every bird will use facial recognition to keep a person they don't like away from their territory.

    I got some crows in the back yard 4 of them. they actually let me touch them, started feeding them at lunch and break where I work but they followed me home or something so I built a little nesting area up on the side of the house, few weeks ago I had an argument with the neighbor that likely could have led to a fist fight, they started squawking at him when he started walking towards me and now they dive bomb his wife and peck at his upstairs window... kinda worried hes gonna call an exterminator or something which would suck cause my dogs love them and they love my dogs. when I brushed my dogs outside they collected all the fur off the grass and used it for their nest. In their defense his wife did throw something at them, didn't see what happened but my brother did say she threw a bottle or something at them.

      +Miss Robin Martz - It's my experience that of all the animals I have taken the time to "get to know" ravens (and parrots), dolphins, monkeys, dogs and cats are the most responsive to human encounters. There are many others of course; horses, squirrels I even had a customer who told me about her personal encounters with her many head of cattle and their unique personalities. But there's something special about a raven, there's a connection, response and even an attempt at a level of some sort of communication that sets them apart from all other animals. Thanks for writing!

    • @theravendiaries
      @theravendiaries  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kristen Lamprecht - Hi Kristen! Sad thing is all "science" can do is speculate. That's why I share my findings directly with the general public and try to stay outside "scientific circles." See, I live my life using and enjoying far more than just my physical senses. I believe in silly things like love, emotions, and yes have even witnessed miracles. I believe in real relationships that go far beyond a measured "physical" perception. By the definition of "science", scientists can't touch those things and still be "scientific." I like to say I use science to help me interpret physical characteristics about the world but most of my life is actually lived and enjoyed far outside my limited "scientific" findings. Make sense?

    Enjoyed your video. I too have been studying ravens for 2 yrs now. Have a mated pair that hangs out on my farm and comes in feeding every morning. Last year they brought their 4 off spring from June to Sept. Fun watching them learn from their parents in my backyard. They never bothered any livestock or free range chickens and were not a nuisance at all. I also give them dead rodents, and natural food kills to keep them wild. I hated all the sarcastic remarks people put here. Thank you for the video.

    • @theravendiaries
      @theravendiaries  7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Your welcome, hope they repeat it with the kids again this year! It's been my experience that ravens have gotten the bad rap from the crows, who in their much larger gangs can reek some real havoc on a farm. Rarely is a pair of ravens much trouble, unless we give them trouble. Although I have had some issues with the larger groups of juvenile ravens that just come through and visit. What part of the world are you in? have your ravens nested and or laid eggs yet? Mine started pretty early this year!

    • @Sunnyacres55
      @Sunnyacres55 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Mine nested a little earlier this year also. Stick carrying about March 9th, then only one raven at a time for last month, now the pair is coming collecting food together so pretty sure they are feeding babies somewhere. I've tried to find where they nest but they get really suspicious when I start looking. Expecting the whole family probably in late May show. I live in Northern California USA, up in the foothills with lots of oaks, pines, elevation 2000 ft.

      One of my families started flying last Wednesday. I call this family the Moros, and like last year, there's 5 in the brood. Went down and spent 2 hours with em this morning. This is what I call getting acquainted time. I just show up and they get used to me being in the area. The adults trust me so eventually the young not only get extremely curious they will come and play and wrestle at my feet. Watching the young learning to fly is about my favorite season! Good luck with yours, keep us posted if you like!

    • @Sunnyacres55
      @Sunnyacres55 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well, I had decided they didn't have babies then 2 wks ago, when I went to feed my livestock, I was greeted with lots of baby raven squawks. 2 babies this year. Female mom is same one as last yr but I believe she has a new mate as he is leery of me, unlike last yr's male. This has made the babies leery of me as well. Fun watching them play and pick up everything, play in the water trough. They show every morning for awhile then fly off to the North.

      Thanks Dan, interesting comment. I'd say it depends on both the circumstances and the capacity of the individual. I have cats in the neighborhood who: 1. have nothing to do with me, OR, 2. stop at the door, meow once or twice, allow me to pet them for two or three strokes and then run off, OR 3. just drop by for food. 1. is obvious, 2. Even though it's quick, they go out of their way to say hi...and they are looking for a specific response from me. 3. just a beggar... Could I call 2 a friend?

    • @AlexColberg
      @AlexColberg 8 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Sure, why not. It shows trust and it shows some affection, two key elements in friendship. Those two characteristics are harder to read with the ravens in your raven scenario. With the ravens it seems to be all about familiarity. Thanks for responding, by the way.

    • @theravendiaries
      @theravendiaries  8 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      You're welcome, but understand I'm woking mostly with birds in a California State Park so there's a definite no touch no hand feed scenario. However, the relationship I have with the young as they are learning to fly is beyond amazing. They will spend 45 minutes to hours, just sitting and talking to me individually, or playing as a group right at my feet. The first few years the adults did not encourage or even allow it. But for the last 12 + years they bring the kids to me. But like my relationship with the kids I also work with at the same park, this is not something you put on a channel for all to see. Unfortunately there are some out there that could miss use or miss read and the last thing I want is to put either in any form of danger. I do have some secret ravens outside of parks and such that do allow very close interaction and contact, but here again, post it and you take the chance of someone harming them!

    Butterflies land on my finger (salt). Hummingbirds feed in my kitchen. A "mean killer" bull comes to me when I whistle and I scratch his back, cheeks and neck. Squirrels come up to me on my deck - right onto my lap. (In fact, a squirrel friend brought her TINY new babies to me just to introduce us!! How cool is THAT!) A local skunk eats right out of my hand and "snuggles" me. My dog talks to me.
    In Indiana, a stallion crashed a barbed wire fence during a bad sudden storm and, badly cut, was caught in the fenced in backyard of neighbors. It got bad!
    The horse panicked and there was a swimming pool in the yard! Two people were injured from the animal rearing and kicking and the police were called and were going to *shoot it!*
    Luckily the owner, a friend of mine, called me. I arrived, just petted and talked to the horse and...... walked him home!
    Know *why*?
    Because animals have a "sense" that a lot of humans don't exercise and a lot have lost.
    They still have..... feelings.

    I HAD a "pet"raven! I wasn't trying to make friends, it just decided it liked me, and followed me around(as long as I was outside), and he'd go with me when I brought my daughter to school. Every morning he'd "say' good morning, and I'd respond. Then,one day I told it if your so friendly, fly down, and talk to me! it did! i was amazed.

    I have a couple of parrots and a dove and when I change out their feed every morning, I used to throw the old in a planter on my deck for the cardinals and little birds. They could still find good seeds in it. Before I knew it, I had a crow on my deck. Within a few days, I had a dozen big crows jumping all over my deck. I lived there for four years and taught riding lessons on the property. The birds constantly looked for me. When I taught my lessons, the crows hung out in the nearby trees. Wherever I was, the crows were with me. They were loud and active and it was such a pleasure to have them in my life. I have crows and other birds now, too, but I sure do miss that murder of crows. Excellent video here. Thanks for sharing!

    I moved out to the Western Mojave about three years ago and have been slowing befriending a pair or ravens that hang out near my house. They have gone from fleeing if I even poke my head out a window when they are 100 yards away to now warning me about stray dogs coming up to the property.
    I've learned that the way they say "Hi" to you if you encounter them on a hike is to look stoically past you from a tree top perch as you walk by. There are a couple that will do little wing-tips if I call to them in flight.
    One of the things that helped win favor with the birds was rescuing a little pit puppy that someone dumped nearby. The little thing showed up on my driveway howling to get let let in. The day after taking her in (she is black so of course I named her Raven) I was sitting out side with playing with her on my lap and two ravens started circling overhead to have a look. I think their curiosity about the dog, made them hang out a little closer than they would have normally and so they started seeing that I was not hostile to them.

    I have a mated pair who visit me several times a day, George and Mama. At first, it was only George. He would gather up my offerings and take off without eating. That’s when I knew he had a mate who was likely brooding her eggs, and he was fending for her. Sure enough, two months later, Georgy Boi showed up with his entire family to introduce them to me. Since then, the kids have all moved away and only the pair come now. They were just here, actually. They mostly get dog kibble, but I also give them any leftover meat from my meals. This time of year I also make sure they have access to water. I really love them. Great video.

      I'm willing to bet all the carrion he showed off died primarily due to the actions of humans other than himself. Definitely no arguing on the roadkill, right? Nature can't really "run its course" when its already got roads, cars, and humans running over it, and nothing this guy does or doesn't do will change that.
      In my opinion, you should give nature more credit for adapting to this world that has belonged to humans for 10,000-20,000 years; ravens aren't stupid and when he stops feeding them they will just fly off to someone or something that will. All they take away from this is a reduced fear of humans in their territory which isn't necessarily dangerous.
