My first fire with the ESEE 5 and Wazoo ferrorod. some chopping, splitting and shaving with the knife and a simple lighting of a fireplug takes far too much effort.

Nothing wrong with a solid workhorse of a knife. Nice little review, I prefer bigger ferro rods, I don't see the point of tiny ones.....glad you try them for us instead of having to buy them ourselves!
I have a ESEE 6 that I’ve had for years, I tapped the handle to make a swell, those flat handles are uncomfortable. Also I grinned a sharp spine on it. I don’t even like to get a knife anymore unless it has the 90 degree spine. I keep a small mora ferro rod on my person with my SAK, works well. A larger ferro rod in my kit. I prefer smaller bushcraft knife to belt carry. Lately I’ve been carrying my mora Garberg, I usually will carry in my kit a chopper or a short machete. If I’m hiking I usually got lighter with a bushcraft black. I’m my neck of the woods it’s really good to always have some type of prang machete. Good video.
I think you would like the Architect knives field buddy 5.5 (1095 or 3V) esee/tops combination. It uses the same 3D handle scales as the esee 5 & 6 & tops makes the blades. Slightly longer blade & much better blade geometry than the esee 5. They also have the field buddy 6.5 & are bringing out more models this year.
I have tried a couple of especially knives and have the izula 2 which I really like. Their guarantee is awesome. The wazoo items a good as an emergency back up for extremely light weight kits or use with the military.
Awesome review Rob! I bought an Esee 5 a couple years back and have yet to use it. Just seems like too much of a pry bar with a sharp edge for my tastes. And it’s too heavy to carry far into the backcountry. It’s even heavier than the Becker BK2 if memory serves. I see it as more of an urban survival knife. I’m glad you like it though. Esee is a great company.
The skill of looking cold ! It's a very cold site, you can't tell but it's on top of a hill with a field to the north , very little cover and a cold estuary after the field. Nice in the summer with a breeze, not so nice in the winter.
The 5 is a good knife , i have the 4 which i find perfect for outdoor work , maybe consider the RAT knives like a 7 or RTAK II from OKC pretty much ESEE without the Rowen heat treat damn good video excellent review and content :-)
Hi Rob. I agree with you, I think it is too short. I've held one and it does not feel right! It is indeed very robust (unbreakable even!), and that posh handle does look great. But, it looked like you were struggling a bit when chopping. I'd love to try it out before passing judgement, but even just from the looks and feel it does not look right. Cheers for now.
I purchased the Esee 5 year’s ago. Much like you between the handle and the weight I’ve never used it. Just purchased the contoured micarta scales and it transformed the knife. Finally like it and will be testing it soon. Look forward to what you think in the end...
Thankx Rob. Surprised at the trouble you had with the Wazoo ferro rod/striker, the one on the Wazoo paracord buckle you sent threw lots of hot sparks. Perhaps it was just cold hands, and yes it definitely needs a longer cord between rod and striker.
Exact same ESEE 5 as mine. I like it a lot. But stripped that horrible paint off, and gave it some gun blue. I always carry a smaller belt knife with it, probably with a scandi. ESEE rides on the pack. It feathers a lot better without the paint, and a flatter edge. A D-ring slips easily under that stupid belt clip for your dangler.
Looks like a half decent knife, perhaps even better after a sharpen? BTW what happened to the Ben Orford Woodlander review, I was looking forward to your views on it ?
You need to experiment with different striking techniques, there are so many.. R Mears. or D West. F Immler. has some very interesting styles.. Personally I am a fan of these smaller rod.. Even as small as the tinny lighter flints 4-6 mm..
i'm assuming that you are a new viewer, i've spent a lot of time using ferrorods and trying different techniques, the main problem here was cold hands and a wobbly surface .
What is that pot hanging on? An overhead branch? Any suggestion for a general use fixed blade under $150? I am not a hunter, so I would not be skinning or gutting any game animals or birds.
Mora Garberg , I prefer the carbon. Casstrom Woodsman, falt or no10. Cold steel master hunter. I've been told that Joker knives are very good value but can't vouch for them as I've never tried one.
I just have never gotten why the American bush crafters have such a fetish about battening with a knife. A small axe is so much more efficient, time and energy saving and enjoyable to use!! I think we have placed too much emphasis on traveling light. Way too much.

I didn't get on with the 6, I found it was a "neither here nor there" knife too light to chop and too long for lighter duty.

RAT 7 & 5 here: I do like them a lot, cheaper than ESEEs, but really worth the price (I bought both of them used, just to set the record straight).

I bet it dose , too much friction with paint , I suppose it's cheaper to produce than a satin or polished finish.

Thats why I am not a fan of those small survival rods. Cold, wet hands, and itsa struggle to get it going.
