How to Build a Simple Stone Walkway | Large Stepping Stone Pathway

  • This simple stone walkway was laid in a day using large stepping stones. I wanted to keep grass space in between each stone for a modern look. I also laid them directly in dirt with no gravel or paver base - I still think the pathway will hold given the stones are so heavy (70 pounds each!). This stepping stone pathway project can be done by a beginner - just dig up some dirt, level the area, and put your stones in!

    Possibly get a sub base of 5mm sand. (So, dig hole, tamper the mud, add sand, tamper that, then loose sand, then paver...) Also, depending on climate and usage, set the stones slightly above the grass line and after 6 months they will be below, from usage and rain and set well... All the best!!

      what would sand do rather than doing it the way in the video?

    I agree, should’ve added some sand and paver. And to have set the stones slightly above the surface to allow for natural settling. But other than that, great job and these aren’t critiques but more so helpful advice if you plan to redo them in the future. Just to help ya out. Great job though, came out amazing.

    Just a quick tool tip... instead of using a rubber mallet, or a sledge hammer, try using a dead blow. It's in the same section as the rubber mallets and sledge hammers... and looks like a cheesy hammer from a Thor movie because it's plastic. But, it's full of shot. Rather than bouncing off the block like your mallet or sledge, all of the force goes into the block. And like the mallet, a dead blow wont break your block like a sledge might. Dead blows come in a variety of weights. You position the block, get it almost level... then wack it a few times on the high side. That drives the block compressing the high point.

    • @DawgMama
      @DawgMama 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is what I have and always called it "the weird mallet" lol. Glad to finally know what it's for and will definitely use it for my pavers. Thank you so much!

    I lay pavers in mud -- mud as in mud pies. Mix the mud in a wheelbarrow to a nice mortar-like consistency, they lay down a mud bed with your trowel and gently lower the stone into it. Mash down the stone as needed to level it. The mud becomes flat dirt when it dries. This way you needn't repeatedly raise and lower the stone to get it level.

    I am working on my japanese garden right now (In Japan) and i need to replace all the stepping stones which i had to remove to remove all the grass in the garden because the house had been vacant for years and this video already got me exhausted because these are actual stones from mountains and have irregular shapes on every side and there are 57 of them, and it is already getting hot here with summer approaching. The smallest stone is 10 inches in length, the largest one is over 3 feet and i will need three other men or women as tough as you, to help me move it or a crane.

    What will happen, is the grass will QUICKLY start covering the stones and it's root system being shallow and on top of concrete blocks that get HOT in summer, it will do poorly and still look like "floundering yard". Constant maintenance trying to keep the grass off of the block "path:. I know because I have purchased two homes now where the pavers ended up completely covered and we wondered, why is the grass dying right here? Better to just sink railroad ties edge to edge or just pour a concrete walkway connecting to the fire pit.
