It's hard to believe this album was "written, arranged and produced" all by George Michael when he was about 24. That's only 10 years older than I was when this came out. He draws from so many influences: Rock, jazz, funk, pop. Faith is a masterpiece!

Absolutely amazing lyrics. He was such a brilliant songwriter. And he always said if you wanted to get to know him just listen to his lyrics. He pours his heart and soul into his songs. He said that he wrote this song entirely in his head from beginning to end down to the arrangements and had it there for two years before he walked into the studio and recorded it. This song is a glimpse into what George could do besides pop. In fact, he could pretty much write and sing in any genre. But down to his core, he was truly a soul singer. What a beautiful and amazing talent he was.

In fact, he starting to write ''Kissing a Fool'' in 1984, but finished to write in 1987 during the making of this album. Also, George never sing this song live until 2006 who he started to singing live this song and always including this song until his death.

    • @rosemiller2990

@@WCD199317 , I’d heard kissing a fool was written completely in his head from beginning to end. From the lyrics to the arrangement all was kept in his memory until he went to record.

I would consider this a standard, in the same style of Frank Sinatra. But I can absolutely see the jazzy elements in it, so it seems like it’s a little bit of a mash up of both.

GREAT reaction! 👏 🔥 You NAILED EXACTLY what the song is about! I love the change in the lyrics that narrates the whole story of this relationship. In the first verse, George says, "Strange that you were strong enough/To even make a start" meaning he's amazed that this lover initially has the strength to look past what other people were saying about their relationship. It's a subtle dig at the lover and a reference to the beginning of the relationship.
Then in the second verse he switches to "Maybe I'll be strong enough/I don't know where to start" and this time he's referring to HIMSELF. He's saying HE needs to have the strength to move on from this lover but he doesn't even know how to begin doing that. So now it's a subtle dig at himself. And the implication here is the relationship is now over.
Then finally in the last verse he says, "Strange that I was wrong enough/To think you loved me too/Guess you were kissing a fool." And so we get the final summation/introspection about the relationship. He's saying he was wrong to ever get involved with someone so weak and fickle. And it's a subtle dig now at BOTH of them: at the lover for not having the fortitude to continue the relationship and at himself for being the fool. Just BRILLIANT SONGWRITING!

    • @enkidude
      @enkidude ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100. More than the beautiful composition and unreal vocal delivery, the songwriting is so tragically rich. He's still unraveled in deep pain and would go back to that person if they were mature enough or could see what they did, he makes no excuses about it, but it won't happen and he's trying to encourage himself to carry that love alone

He was a genius and I really hope he can be remembered as one of the greats. Unfortunately, people still see him in a wee window of Wham! or Faith; although if those were the only things I was famous for, I'd be happy. But George is so much more. Pleeeese react to Older - his best album in his and my opinion. Thanks Anton. x

Fun fact, he spent three years to write the song and he recording the vocals in one take. He started to write that song in 1984 during the tour of Wham ''Make it Big Tour'' during his tour in japan. He was alone in the hoteland he started to write some things in his book. He stopped after this day and never using it, and when he starting to recording his debut solo album (''Faith''), he return who how he started with ''Kissing a Fool'' and achieve to write the song. After finishing to write that song, he recording accapella the song in one take and he construct later ther musical arrangements around of his vocal performance.
He never played this song live until 2006 who after that, he always including this song in his concerts. ''Father Figure'' and ''One More Try'' was the only songs of the album who George always including in all his concerts.

Hi Anton, I'm so happy to see you with George again. Yes, this song is jazz. The album OLDER is also mostly Jazz along with SONGS OF THE LAST CENTURY & INTO THE pARIS GARNER' OPERH HOUSE! Your right on point again, Anton. It's really good in my opinion that you pick up alot on some of George's messages. Just a note, each time you listen even to the same song, you will find that this same song will mean something different in your own life that you relate to in your own life & make sence, feel better, knowing there's someone just for you to go to when your at a low spot in your life & need to find some ansewers. George just always seams to have helped me through all my in's & outs, up's & downs in order for me to understand stuff & what I need to change to be a happier & healthier human being. I must not forget when I'm feeling good or need to I can always go to George & celebrate & have a party, right here in my own living room. A night with George is always better, like a good friend. I always have a soft place to land & suround myself in his heart through his music & for the humain being he was & still is in a sence! I TRUELY HOPE that you get George's magic, & realize what a blessing George was & definatly still is! I cannot even amagine what my life w/o George in It would be! Anton, again lovely to see you & witness your happines come through with George. Enjoy my friend, for you have a lifetime to experience the magic of George. GEORGE IS MY LITTLE PIECE OF HEAVEN, & will always be!😄 🎤😎🎶🎶🎶🗺💖

    Anton
Good to see you brother this is known as jazz or big band.
What gave that to wear also was the noir look to it in the black and white tones with the fan with the metal grates which they haven't made in decades.
As other people have mentioned Tony bennett, Frank Sinatra and music from the 40s, 50s and 60s.
It's a great song and I love it when artists try to broaden their range and their horizons.

You are correct Anton. "Kissing A Fool" is a song that is heavily influenced by the Jazz/Great American Songbook music that was very popular in America from approximately 1900-1960. It has been called America's Classical Music. Today it is sometimes characterized as "lounge music". I hope that if you listen to more of it you will come to appreciate it. I have loved that genre of music since my teen years.

I'm assuming you know this song is about someone he said he loved but that that person couldn't be with him because he was George Michael, it was too overwhelming for that person. Just like every other tune he wrote about his personal experiences, the emotion is right on the surface brought by his remarkable vocals and lyrics. I felt every bit of pain and hurt in all his personal love songs. For me, he was unique in moving me every single time with his music, his vulnerability was always so transparent - something I think nearly every one of us can relate to. If you haven't yet listened to his much later "This is Not Real Love" - I highly recommend it, his vocals in that tune are also simply stunning in style and range. If I ever heard a "lounge" singer that had his talent, I'd move into that lounge and live in it.

I'm mid-life and I've seen exactly what you're speaking about. I've had so many friends or acquaintances and family just seem to now be a shell of what they once were. It's very sad. When I was younger, I wasn't always sure necessarily of what I wanted, but I was quite sure as a young adult as to what I DIDN'T want - which looking back, is evident by the life choices I've made thus far. Sure, I've made mistakes - as we all have. But I can say most of my major decisions have served me well. I always tell younger people to be VERY careful with the big irreversible decisions in life. The biggest is having children and WITH WHOM you choose to have them with. Then there are major decisions that may not be irreversible, but are surely tough and costly (with time and emotion and money) to switch when you've started on the road - like marriage, college major, career path, etc... There are so many people even younger than middle age that have paid dearly for NOT listening to their own intuitions and heart, and are just beat down and lost due to living a lie - which yes, often does come from listening to others; be it family, friends, or societal expectations as a whole.

He was so talented. Such a loss of musical talent. Great observations,. Kurt Cobain said he would 'rather be hated for who he is than loved for who he isn't. I've always been the dreamer, but realistic at the same time. INFJs are 'supposed' to be experts at being the most idealistic while still able to be exist practically in the real world. It's dichotomous, but it's also - well, nice in its way. It prevents jadedness and bitterness because the idealism, the dreamer inside never really gets snuffed out. The joy and the spark are still there. :)

Sarah McLachlan!! Goddess of the 90s...but her music is timeless. You MUST listen!! Take your pick of songs and albums, she never disappoints!

I think he was still in the closet at the time of this song, so there is another element to “people” talking since being gay at the time was still not well accepted.
