    Margarine tubs… invented for the express purpose of mixing wood finishes… analine dies, thinning Tung oil, mixing color into epoxy… and, apply right from the mixing bowl! I’ve also used them for small painting touch ups, draining fluids from engines and separating fasteners during tear downs.
    I used to save Cool Whip tubs but, my wife insists on home made whipped cream. So, I use Country Crock bowls now!
    After seeing that water in the fuel tank, the crap dissolved there and the general shape of the throttle etc… I just knew you were due for an electrical and carburetor rebuild. Neil, I heard Neighbor Donnie looking over your shoulder. I’m gonna believe he sent inspiration from above to bring that engine to life!
    My TracVac is PTO driven. That saves me a bunch of time and money on engine repair. However, I still have to leave my seat to dump it. I wonder how an auto dump system for it would look? It would be complicated… but surely it can be done.
    All I need is a hydraulic cylinder to pivot the bed on the frame. Some kind of hinge and lock on the tail panel… perhaps electric would do? And, a bendable tube that would detach, position and reattach… between the outlet of the vac and the inlet of the collection box.
    I’m gonna ruminate on that for a while. Having this video for motivation and the Frankensplitter video I am releasing this morning for inspiration… I have hopes that I can get it done!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can't believe that it started and seemingly ran pretty well without any carb or electric work; other than the spark plug. I really wish I had one that was PTO driven though too. Some of them I've seen have electric start so that you can kill the motor while you dump without getting off. I'm hoping I can just leave it idle and it won't blow too crazy.
      That would be a fun project to build a custom dump MCS. I"m hoping that my upcoming leaf harvest video will feature three different versions of MCS units. But alas, it is a lot more prep work to get them all there and running.
      I need to get over and check out that Frankensplitter video. I'll probably watch this week as I work in the shop. I don't necessarily have any projects to work on but I've got ice cream buckets and margarine tubs to organize! :)

  • @MrThomasfouraker
    @MrThomasfouraker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great video and reminded me of my struggles when I procured my first MCS. My pivot rod actually broke before breaking free which led me to my 2nd MCS which is functional. I have considered having the rod turned down a few thousandths and adding zerk fittings along the housing to grease that rod. Also you may have already figured out, don’t let the lift cylinders get too far out of sync because it will rack the frame and bend the large guide rods. It also should have a shutoff that you’re suppose to keep closed except for dumping. This keeps the cylinders from bleeding up and slightly lifting the lid while collecting debris. It can become a dusty mess when it does that. I have found myself jockeying the hyd lever to keep my lid firmly seated. Anxious for the leaf collecting video!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks for the tips Thomas. I'm still not sure how it works so that really helps. I see that the lock mechanisms appear to be working so that will be interesting to see. I noticed there are holes in the tube for that shaft and I assume you can lubricate by spraying penetrating oil into the tube. I'll have to keep an eye on it. I'm really looking forward to trying this thing out!

    Just tagged in and you were talking about the RPM not being high enough .... yeah the RPM will get better over time, however if it don't recover enough for your satisfaction you can put more tension (some bend and some adjust) on the governor spring and that should increase the RPM ... baby steps

    The 2021 Fall leaf harvest should go great.
    As for the steering shaft being sacrificed it will only take a piece of round rod to return it to full value. Which is probably less than the cost of the rod. 😉

    Neil. I keep the plastic Chinese food containers with lids. You asked a few questions that I think you want answered? lol Check the hydraulic level on your tractor now after you have cycled those cylinders. They were probably empty and hopefully you filled them from the system on the tractor. I couldn't tell if the lines on the bagger were closed. The WD in WD 40 means water displacement. It is a penetrating oil as well and not the best lubricant, try using something with silicone or lithium in it for a lubricant like for your garage door hinges. I don't know if it is still made but for the throttle cable a product called "Dry Slide" is great if you can find it. A good way to clean rust or debris from gas tanks and the like, is putting a piece of chain inside and strapping on the hood of your mower while you mow. The vibrating chain will have it looking like you sand blasted it. Finally. That bar you put the anti seize on, drill the outer pipe and tap it to thread in grease fittings. If you use it every year you will thank yourself next fall. I did that on the shovel bucket I made for my JD 430. When are you going to put that dump truck in the garage and make it black and chrome? ;o)

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of great info and advice here John! Thanks I appreciate it. I can't believe you mentioned "Dry Slide". I had a whole bit about it in here that I edited out but my Dad used it all the time when I was a kid on the throttle cable for my go-kart. He still has some over at home. Now I wished I had left it in there but I know exactly what you're talking about. I loved the smell of it!
      I like that chain trick for the gas tank. I'll likely do something in the way of grease zerks too for that shaft.
      Thanks for all the great feedback and taking the time to share them.
      I am really hoping that something can start happening on that dump truck this winter. It's starting to look a bit weathered. Thanks for asking though too!

    So thoughts on the bar you cleaned up, why not put some grease zerks there to be able to service before wondering if anti-get everywhere. I no it's extra work, and you like to flip items but there it is. Love you content, you do a great job with including your daughter in explaining things to her. This is parenting gone right!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a bunch. Yes, I thought of adding zerks too. The tube isn't thick enough for a regular zerkbso I would need to add a standoff most likely. The pipe that turns inside the tube is hollow and has two holes drilled in it. so I think the intended lubrication method is to spray oil or penetrating oil in the center of the tube and it will run out the holes that are in it to lubricate it.

    Nice find Neil! In my opinion those hydraulic dump MCS units are the best collection units out there. I've had tow-behind vacuums, baggers, and sweepers and none of them really seem to get the job done - especially when you've got really heavy grass to pick up. I'd like to find one of these 3-point units with the engine-driven blower someday - that way I could use it on my 318, 782, 2072, or any garden tractor with 3-point hitch.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope this thing lives up to my expectations. We had two trees that lost their leaves early and I missed the chance to try it on those and now I'm patiently waiting for the rest of the leaves to drop. Never thought I would say that!
      I've tried about every other version of leaf collection and with every version had to get off the tractor to deal with the leaves. I'm hoping this is just so easy and I'll even be willing to put up with a little less capacity and dump more often if I'm not required to get on and off.
      I know of one other hydraulic MCS mounted up on a 420 in our area but that's it. I've inquired about that one multiple times now too!
      Thanks for watching Michael!

      @@digdrivediy That owner sure has a knack for finding the bad powder coat machines. Does the 322 change any of the possibilities for what you might do with Bill? You were considering combining bill and your Subaru Robin swapped 316 right? The 322 doesn't have the hp as your 316 does now, but has all the hydraulics and power steering. You may just need to spend a little time with it and see how it stands up to the tasks you have. Throw that sweepster on the front and see how it handles that. Could be an interesting way to push leaves around for the girls to jump in, even though you just fixed up that MCS.
