Idyllic Moroccan town of Moulay Idriss M A

For a town that's more than 1,200 years old, Moulay Idriss remains one of Morocco's best-kept secrets. Although tour buses bring loads of visitors up from Meknes to visit the ancient nearby Roman ruins at Volubilis, most go return without continuing to Moulay Idriss.
And that's a blessing in disguise for the discerning traveler. For this charming village on the edge of the Middle Atlas Mountains that is the burial place of Morocco's first Arabic king, Idris I, maintains its centuries-old charm without having been--so far--spoiled by mass tourism.
I spent several delightful days here, soaking in the history, beauty and quaintness of the town after stepping off a local bus and having my luggage hauled through the narrow streets to my ryad--by burro.
