I currently am following your AT thru hike and have enjoyed it so much I decided to go back and watch your PCT hike. I think I love your passion about what you are doing. That passion shows in every video you produce. Thanks for the incredible videos, and the hard work it takes, especially while on trail!
Yuccas and agaves live a long time, then sprout those big flowering stalks, just one time in their lifetime, then die due to the energy it takes for them to grow them. The shiny brown tree is Manzanita (little apple). It's chaparral key species. There are a lot different kinds of oak trees, and live oaks, or 'evergreen oaks, have small waxy leaves. All oaks have acorns, and each species is different. Fun video, have a great hike. I look forward to following. I promise not to lecture anymore.
I appreciate the knowledge, didn't know that oaks came in so many varieties. The 40-foot oak in my backyard looks entirely different--except for the telltale acorns you pointed out.
Jay, I love your positive attitude and your childlike wonder at all the new sights on the PCT. It truly is an amazing place and experience. I remember in 2016 geeking out at all those interesting rock formations. Enjoy your hike and I am cheering you on.
The Whimsical Woman The temperature has been all over the place from 20s at night to sweltering heat so be prepared! I doubt 20s will be back but that sun is a scorcher. I must have used my umbrella every day now.
I laughed when you started smacking your face with that umbrella. Didn’t see that coming.. ha ha.. and I think you are the only one I’ve seen who documented their first # 2 on the trail... ha ...great video. Can’t wait to watch more. Stay safe out there!
That water from the umbrella was so refreshing! One habit I maintained was packing everything up, leaving camp, then looking for a good site after a few hundred yards away from camp. Digging up a used spot will make you appreciate going where nobody else has been near.
Great video. Such original content, I don't think I've ever seen another vloger take video of their poop hole! Butt that's far enough. Wishing you a great hike and I'll be watching.
So cool how you can see the trail. We can sometimes see the offroading trails when we go offroading with our Jeep and it's pretty neat. Appreciate you taking us along and I'm excited to see more!
Great video Jay, I’m following you the whole way. I’ve watched 100’s of people hike the pct in the past but your giving a whole new enjoyable prospective I haven’t experienced before. Thanks great job
Jay Wanders Out Jay your showing stuff that nobody shows, not the same old stuff. Plus you have a love and fascination for the trail and what your seeing that’s being passed on to your audience in an honest way. You don’t have an agenda or trying to be overly cool, just an honest guy having the time of his life. I watched every episode that you’ve posted in one sitting tonight so I’m current to April 20. Thanks again, my personal schedule is to do the PCT in 2019. Take Care
An incredible visual and sensory feast out there Jay. I see you met some of my fellow countrymen. Therm kids have traveled! I must say good second use for the umbrella - a cooler as well as a shelter from rain and sun. Well, awesome views and mountains. Loving the trail already. Take care. Mark
Jay, you reminded me of a boy in a toy store. Ha. Love the enthusiasm. I believe the pink flowers were on a Jojoba but not positive. I have a month until my start and am getting antsy.
I'll be following your PCT hike...I was scheduled to go, but my hip gave out, so I have to wait till it's fixed. Enjoy your hike, should be a grand experience in your life...
This is going be a great vlog. I love you're perspective and the appreciation of the little things in nature that provide such amazing beauty. Thanks for sharing it. Best wishes for a successful journey!
Just two days ago a few people were getting a kick out of me staring at clay roofing tiles which were on every house we saw in the town in Germany we were at. It's just so uncommon! Tina also gets a kick out my curiosity about the moles that live out here. I really want to see one now.
Just starting through your videos because I found you later in the season when I already had enough people to try to keep up with. It's nice, as so many people are finishing, to start at Mexico all over again! I love all your stops to be amazed and wonder about the details of the small things. I hope you kept it up all the way. I'm looking forward to the rest of your series!
Thanks for coming along! I guess according to many I do keep up that sense of wonder although I don't realize it myself. I was worried really if I would keep it up but I guess I do although I don't necessarily feel I do. Washington had a completely new environment and it was easy to me amazed.
I saw the episode that Mari Johnson had you on and decided to check out your channel next! Have only watched this Episode so far but I like your style! Lol! Love how excited your were about all the new things, had me chuckling and smiling the whole video! Can’t wait to watch the rest of the Journey you had!
Thanks, Debra! So much was new or things I've only seen before on TV so it was one amazing experience. Every day was amazing and I can truly say I enjoyed it. Even in the most miserable moments there was still so much to make me happy.
TMI about # 2!! Like your video of the vegetation. Yes those are acorns, and yes those are Oak trees. The tree with the brown bark is a manzanita I believe. Good luck, looks like you've made it a long way so far!
I skipped around some but came back to start at the beginning of your PCT videos. You’re videos are awesome! I would be geeking out on everything just like you are 😊
There's so much to geek out about! I couldn't tell you how many times someone didn't notice something until I pointed it out... not sure if most people shared my excitement though. There's still so much to see out there too.
Nice video. Good to see an Asian out on the trail, pretty rare from my experience doing short backpacking trips in Oregon. I"m a hafu. Anyway, keep it up and I hope you make it.
Thanks for sharing your fine vlogs on the 2018 PCT. I like your sense of wonder and discovery, and showing what you see. I did the JMT and T-Y Trail in 1971-72, and never got a good chance to do the PCT although I've hiked small bits and pieces here and there. I'm up to Yosemite, viewing all of your episodes to then so far, looks great on my TV. Good luck on your completion.
Well, now that you are near the end of the PCT, I am just now hearing about your videos. Heard about you from Dixie’s Q&A last week. I will try to quickly catch up on your videos. Enjoyed this video!! You were cracking me up, because it was like watching myself when on a trail/out in nature. I’m like a kid in a candy store stopping to look at all the cool things! I love it!! You’d be fun to hike with!
I have seen so much that I never imagined seeing myself it has been an amazing experience. Thanks for watching! I tried to avoid promoting my channel during her Q&As since it's her show and all so thanks you for taking the time to check me out.
Hi Jay, I was going to say you need some small fake fur to go over your mic ports for wind suppression, but saw you said you were working on it. Good luck, we’ll be following along.
Randy Smith Believe it or not I've been carrying a set with me the whole time but have been too exhausted to apply it but I finally did my video 3 I think. It works so well!
Nice video, Jay. So when will the other hikers give you your trail name of "Lookit!"? Hahaha Good to see you are having a great time on the trail so far.
Tagging along with your adventure it is awesome that you are enjoying nature on your hike congrats on the #2 hope you did not contribute to the pollution on the trail by leaving toilet paper. Pack it in pack it out
Just subscribed. Following several hikers this year. I live in the Philippines and miss hiking in CA. I really like your video style. Keep up the good work and I'll be following along. Got a trail name yet?
Lol, you look so different after the end of your hike....how much weight did you lose? I'm watching this to see what to expect on the first couple of weeks or so.
I'm overweight as you will see in my upcoming video. I was home bound for most of last year and some of 2017. I gained a lot of weight during that time. My right hip had eroded so much that walking and existing was extremely painful. Fortunately the VA gave me a new lease on life with a new hip and now I'm ready for some adventure. What software did you use t create your youtube videos and I assume you did all of this on your phone? @@JayWandersOut

Same here. Lol a little too much tmi...lol
That’s just what I am doing.

Thannks for all the info! I just a few hours ago found out the name of the manzanita tree. I'm around 165 now still loving it.
Wow. Keep the videos coming.
Jay, I love your positive attitude and your childlike wonder at all the new sights on the PCT. It truly is an amazing place and experience. I remember in 2016 geeking out at all those interesting rock formations. Enjoy your hike and I am cheering you on.
Phoenix Genesis I've been wondering if I have too much of it sometimes.
Subscribed! I start next weekend. I am so excited. Good luck out there!!
The Whimsical Woman The temperature has been all over the place from 20s at night to sweltering heat so be prepared! I doubt 20s will be back but that sun is a scorcher. I must have used my umbrella every day now.
Which umbrella are you using!?
I have the Euroschrim and love it. I hope it lasts though since I keep getting it caught up on brush.
I laughed when you started smacking your face with that umbrella. Didn’t see that coming.. ha ha.. and I think you are the only one I’ve seen who documented their first # 2 on the trail... ha ...great video. Can’t wait to watch more. Stay safe out there!

love your sense of wonder. I hope you retain that throughout the entire hike-it's really refreshing
Mary B I find I still stop a lot all the time because of that!
Great video. Such original content, I don't think I've ever seen another vloger take video of their poop hole! Butt that's far enough. Wishing you a great hike and I'll be watching.

Loved the interaction with the kiddos! Stay Safe and Enjoy your Epic adventure! Thanks for taking us with you!
OkBlueLineStrong I wish I recorded the night before but I'm still learning the whole vlogging thing.
Yeaaah, its finally time for you to start. I can feel in your voice your happiness! Enjoy!!!!!!!
Great start to your hike! We are following you the whole way.
Gemma Hanlon Thanks! I hope I can entertain the while time. I'm always looking for some way to improve but I'm working on it.
It's starting!
Tim Watson I'm on my zero night right now and kind of dreading the 3000 ft climb over 5 miles tomorrow towards Jacinto.
Good stuff man. I miss this section, brings back a lot of memories.
What a cool family !! Love to see all the types of people on the trail!! Thanks for sharing!

Russell in the Bush A month? Better be ready for that heat! It's been really bad a few days already and water is drying up even more for you.
I can see you are going to have a great time being excited with every new thing you see. The Sierras will floor you....
Great job so far, enjoying your excitement with all the new to life experiences. Godspeed...
Looks awesome, have a great time! Nice bonus, no need to run ssh tunnels over a bunch of obscure ports anymore!
Hi from Holland, looking forward following your adventures. Enjoy and stay safe!
Great start Jay! I'm looking forward to following your journey all the way!
Joining you out on the journey. Best of luck from the UK.
Woohoo! Have a great time!! Those are some awesome kids you met.

I just discovered your channel last night. I love your enthusiasm! Desert plants are really cool.
Caroline Nunez Aren't they? They are so unique and have a combination of beauty and danger to them.
A Manzanita tree, lovely. Good video too.🌝
Such a bizarre tree! I'm happy to see other vloggers in amazement of them as well.

Day one of a thru-hike is sooo exhilarating! I bet you were on air! Interesting perspectives, by the way. I enjoyed your video! :)
Subbed - I'd like to see a few shots of your camp/tent set up and the campsites along the way
ib516 I'll definitely be doing that. In fact I've been taking 360 photos of every camp site so you can look completely around.
Best of luck brother, hike on 👣👣👣👣👣👣👣🏔👍🏽
So exciting!! Congrats and best of luck!!
Enjoyed your first segment Jay. Found your channel via Carmen San Diego and Squish. Keep walking.
Congratulations on a great start. Really appreciate you geeking out on nature. Curious what gear you might have changed out to stay warm. Cheers!
Solo Over 50 I actually used that scarf I found in a hiker box for several days more. It still wreaked by the time I got rid of it.
OK...time to binge watch the PCT...again...here we go!
Hope you enjoy! I get a kick watching this year's vloggers and seeing them excited about the same things like the manzanita trees.
Hi Jay, I was going to say you need some small fake fur to go over your mic ports for wind suppression, but saw you said you were working on it. Good luck, we’ll be following along.

Really enjoyed the video, I would like to see your camp, dinner and resupply trips if you care to share. 🙂
Tagging along with your adventure it is awesome that you are enjoying nature on your hike congrats on the #2 hope you did not contribute to the pollution on the trail by leaving toilet paper. Pack it in pack it out
Awesome. Good luck on your journey.
no worries being a geek is cool, just kidding. just started watching and I love your prospective.
Loving the video - and laughed at the Poop Haiku!
Nice thanks, will be watching. Where are you from ?

Just subscribed. Following several hikers this year. I live in the Philippines and miss hiking in CA. I really like your video style. Keep up the good work and I'll be following along. Got a trail name yet?
liked the video, subscribed, and then turned on notifications. I hope and pray you make it all the way to Manning Park
Exciting
Did the umbrella help...?
Are you camping solo or with a group. good luck. stay safe. and live the dream
when did you start this hike again? I'm starting on the 13th....I guess it's getting hot mid March?
March 22nd
Also - gotta ask how your solar panel is performing? I plan on bringing one too, but catch a lot of grief from hikers for planning on bringing one.
Oh, snap! you started with Satyr!
Yep, we shared a ride to the monument.
Hi Jay did u start the PCT April 3?
I started March 22nd last year 2018.
what up bill jason the marine from stehikin saturday love the video way to inspire
I think the whole section in Washington is calling for you.
Well I may just start down south or do it in sections I dunno
Great vid, thanks for sharing your poo hiku.
The shinny brown tree is Manzanita
Lol, you look so different after the end of your hike....how much weight did you lose? I'm watching this to see what to expect on the first couple of weeks or so.
I'd say I lost at least 35 probably all in the first 2 months. After that I think I gained some muscle and my body hit an equilibrium.
I'm overweight as you will see in my upcoming video. I was home bound for most of last year and some of 2017. I gained a lot of weight during that time. Nice video- beautiful views - I agree that it’s cool to be able to see where the trail goes... awesome view at the end!
Thanks, Jennifer. The trail gets better and better. I also lose a lot of that chubby face! :) Thanks for joining along.
Anyone else rewatching this series for the 3rd time?
Thanks, Alexander! I hope you enjoy. What's interesting is how much weight just flies off of me the first few weeks.
@@JayWandersOut I know!! Im only about halfway now but you already look so different! Thanks for an amazing series
