    One of your best PCT videos so far Jay! The sound of the hail falling in an otherwise silent landscape really provided a strong sense of place.

    Cool snow. Here in Colorado, we call those little balls of snow/soft hail 'grapple'.

    Great video, Jay! I really love following this past journey of yours! Lone Pine always reminds me of Badwater 135 more than anything. The video of the road leading up to My Whitney Portal is the last half marathon the runners make after starting below sea level! Crazy race that a few of my friends run every year!

      That is one crazy ultra! So hot! I'm glad you're enjoying it. The hike was amazing so I was happy to share the experience.

      @@JayWandersOut I am! I'm usually out ultra running but I'm out of commission for a while, having surgery in October. So, watching very cool & inspirational videos like yours are keeping me sane! : )

    Those clouds rolling in over the mountains on your zero(s) were just insane! Gorgeous, but insane! Nothing quite like hiking in the snow - it really does transform everything.

      Ron Brown Thanks. Those few days delayed us but we have been trucking along now.

    Well glad for you it was just a few inches. Of course by the time of your reading this could have changed. Loving the reddish brown tree trunks, pale medium green pine and white snow. Some good photo ops there. Let us know what you think of the water proof socks, if they end up keeping your feet too moist. Thought I would share some photos of my hiking around Anchorage but TH-cam does’t allow that in text. Thanks for sharing Jay.

      Randy Smith Waterproof socks were surprisingly very waterproof and my feet did breathe if the outside layer was dry. I would recommend them for winter hiking in trail runners. I did however not wear them much at all because there were so many water fords each day we usually just walked through in shoes and the socks would have been more of a pain in those situations.

    Snow! I'm just glad it doesn't look as bad as it sounded last year's was. Really looking forward to seeing your perspective of the JMT/Whitney.

    Same time you got snow Rainer and North Cascades got 5 inches. I really didn't think the rain or snow would stop you , remember last September. But play it safe Jay. Many people did go through the snow as they are in Sierra City. Starting this weekend I guess the weather change as it's suppose to be in the 80s and possibly 90s for Washington this early..2 weeks of dry weather.

      Willard Wooten I just hit Sonora Pass and once I lose all this extra gear weight I'm really ramping up the miles!

  • @memathews
    @memathews 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, great views! A little snow makes it feel like you're really on an adventure here, just not enough for the speed of skis or added weight of snowshoes.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      memathews The snow and ice made the mountains so beautiful it was worth the extra risks... I don't know if it was worth the fields of mud we had to trek through but close.

    Been skipping around your videos, they're great. Curious, did all the groups you hiked with finish the trek?

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most did and I think a couple skipped some sections or hopped around. In the beginning I was hiking with 2 that did the AT and were purists so they finished for sure although they flipped around a ton to avoid the snow.

    What the hail there Jay!!!???? New snow in this time of year..... and you aren't even in the really high country yet! It's going to get interesting I think!!!

      Dave Nelson We got lucky. After that it was almost all cloudless sunny days for almost 2 weeks straight.

    Glad your back. You were missed. Thanks for all the details I’m not seeing on some of the other vlogs. So much snow. Didn’t hear any complaints about cold. Are you staying warm? Are you using the neoprene water socks?

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Susie Flores I run pretty warm and love winter hiking so no complaints. I did buy some waterproof socks and they were useful for several days but many days there were so many water fords we just walked right through in our shoes and waterproof socks would not have worked so I didn't wear them too often. For the first day back from Line Pine they would have been great but not so much afterwards.

    Amazing views of the Sierra. How hard was it when you went back up and in there? It looked cold, but was it super difficult hiking? Expected difficulty or worse? Easier? Great job Jay!

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      L. Michele Scott I'd say expected difficulty. Have extra food just in case and know what temperatures your gear can take you. I run warm so I've been pretty comfortable even on the coldest nights but I also switched to the X-therm so I could save my energy for something other than staying warm.

    • @LMicheleS
      @LMicheleS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay, do you think the regular NeoAir isn't warm enough for the Sierra? I also sleep warm - not as warm as a guy, but not cold like a typical woman.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      L. Michele Scott I bet it would be fine. If you have the woman version of it even better. The foam ZLite Sol I started with was definitely not for a few days but people still had and used them.

    • @LMicheleS
      @LMicheleS 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I have the generic version of the NeoAir. But that's good to know.

    Butter would be an optimal source of fuel. Full of short medium chain fatty acids, so burns quickly for energy. Saturated fat has around twice as many calories as carbs, and is chock full of nutrition. Grab lots of it, and add it to your cup of coffee.

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kenny Ritchie Funny that you say that. We've been carrying butter with us since Lone Pine but we just got to Sonora Pass and the temperatures are hearing up so we are switching out to olive oil if we can find a good enough container for it. A huge glob of butter in every dinner was delicious! I had no guilt just licking it off my spoon either.

      Jay Wanders Out consider coconut oil. I eat Keto and use both that and butter extensively. Adds MCT's for energy and makes great coffee! Plus you can get it powdered.

    Oh. The butter. I wanted to say I heard of one young couple that would eat the sticks outright, they needed it to stay warm on a year long hike across Alaska’s coast. Yuck 🤢

    • @JayWandersOut
      @JayWandersOut  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rogue Preparedness Thank you but I'll be fine. I have a 26,800 battery and it plus my 10,000 battery kept all my devices powered up even through 8 days. I'm actually thinking of sending the 10k one home now to cut some weight. It's getting to the big mile days so I need to get lighter and get my average miles up.
