This was very helpful! Thank you. Wired my RG 550 Genesis with 2 dimarzio evos and left the Ibanez single in the middle. BTW if you are choosing this setup, I didn't need to swap the wires from the single coil.
Hi, great video. I love it. Just a few questions if I may. 1 around min 5:20 you ground the final 3 cables and you say there is one for the bridge, one for the output jack and one for the single coil that grounds to the body of the guitar, wich cable is that? And 2. Did you ground the switch too? Thanx
Its a wire that goes to the body of the guitar. You can normally find them around the pickups screwed into the wood. Its normally a very small screw. I did not ground the switch no.
Hello, I love your tutorials. Would it be possible for you to make the similar video for the “Kaish - 5-way switch”. They are so sturdy. I just installed mine in my JEM 77FP, but I did it the standard parallel way and now I want to switch it to this. They have numbered lugs on them, from 1-8, straight across the board. I just don’t know where to put the wires/sets of wires to give me this split coil setup. Can you please tell me asap, as I have a guitar on the bench. I have the similar HSH configuration on my guitar, like a JEM. Ty, you’re the best 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Great video. Thanks! Question: I have a guitar with 3 humbuckers. I swapped the 3-way switch for a 5-way switch like you demonstrated. I'm going to use volume pots to split the humbuckers. From what I've learned, the wiring would be different, with less wires going to the switch, correct? Have you ever done that type of guitar mod? If so, do you have a video/diagram? Thanks in advance!
Great information. I have a 1993 Gibson LP Studio Lite with the M3 Electronics. It has the same HSH pickup arrangement but uses a standard 5 way switch and a single mini-toggle (DPDT) to split the coils to single coil mode. Not sure how I would do this with the configuration I have on my Les Paul Studio. Is there a diagram I can download or access? I am also not sure of the color coding of the original Gibson 496R (Neck) and 500T (bridge) pickups the middle pickup I have a Seymour Duncan SSL-2. Thanks and super well done video. You explain it very clearly, which makes it easy to follow... Thanks. Phil NYC Area
@@merlingreaves7079 Yes, I found out what colors were what on the Gibson pickups and it came out great. Sounds a lot better too as I was not getting the hum canceling in position 2 and 4 on the 5-way switch ( for some reason in single coil mode) and it corrected that issue. I am very happy with the out come. I saw on another video if I get a push/pull pot, I could get two more sounds, but I have not tried that yet even though I ordered the new CTS Pot w/switch. Would you have a video on that Mod? Thanks. Phil NYC Area
@MG Guitar Mods - May I ask? I can not understand how bridge humbucker south coil is works during switch bridge position (most down), because in this position it's black/white and red connect each other (SHORT CIRCUIT), This position bridge south coil can not be working. please explain this I can not get answers anywhere
Thanks alot man, this really helped! I did everything correctly, and I end up with having split coils on both positions 1 and 5, so it's like I have a strat with SSS configuration. It sure sounds cool, but i wonder where did I went wrong, or it's maybe due to switch .
Man, I spent about an hour getting mine wired up using just the graphic. I was wondering why 2-4 on my switch didnt work and 1/5 was using all 3 pickups... I didnt realize the graphic for the switch was actually backwards... lmfao.
you have to wire each tone from legs 1, 2, OR 3 (note the OR here) of the switch (bridge, middle or neck hot wire) directly into a tone knob, and then from tone pot to ground. BUT you can't share a tone knob with another pickup, you will have, inevitably, one pickup without a tone control.
This has saved me a lot of head scratching thanks. About to put an old PAF Pro in my RG550 and I couldn't work out the wiring.

I appreciate you for making this video. You are very well spoken and you explained things clearly. This helped me a lot.
Great video. Are you still planning a HH with coil split using the switch??? You know you want to!

@@mgguitarmods9619 great, now I know. Keep your videos coming, they are pure gold. Cheers.

If you can sort out the pickup colors this video should work ok for you I think.

Thank you for this. I did the same wiring but my single coil pickup is not working.
See if reversing the wires helps.

It could be the switch. But I would double-check the pickup wires.
Will it work for 2 humbucker 5 way switch inner outer coil split if ingore the single coil and ground both 2nd and 7th terminal
thankyou for this sir,,, may i ask if you can cover on how to wire h-s-s 1 vol 1 tone using 5 way import switch? thankyou
That's sounds good. I can work on that for sure.

Can you wire 2 tone pots in this setup instead of one? If so how would you do that?

it is not clear to me where the final three grounds originate from or where the other end goes....
They come from your 3 pickups.
@@merlingreaves7079 Thank you!
What switch did you use the ym-50? Will any 5 way work?
Some import style switches connect the 2 sides together. That can lead to issues in this specific situation.
I used a ym-50.
