HSS Strat Wiring Tutorial

- In this tutorial I show how to wire a Strat with the HSS (humbucker, 2 single coils) set up using a Strat superswitch to coil split the humbucker.
The HSS Strat setup confuses many people because the aim is to find the right combination of 250k/500k pots and 0.022/0.047 capacitors.
In this setup I actually use both - and 470k resistors added to the circuit trick the single coils into seeing 250k volume and the humbucker 500k volume.

I recently did this wiring on a Strat I'm building. Great tutorial. Don't make the mistake I made and make sure you're using 470k ohm resistors and not 470 ohm resistors. I found out right away when I tested the pickups and my singles were very muted. I am still waiting for my capacitor for the treble bleed circuit. I ordered my CTS pots from you. I'm the customer who's shipment to the states made a detour to Kuwait and then Milan, Italy, then back to the states. Thank you for your excellent response and customer service for my order.
Thanks for posting this… I made the same mistake!
OMG I just did that! LOL
what the wattage and tolerance of the 470k resistors are you using?
thanks for adopting the rare and seldom seen quality that is doing something the correct way in a youtube tutorial! Outstanding!
This should be at the first page of google !! what a legend man !!! i was pulling my hair because i wasn't able to find a proper wiring diagram , but i found gold with this vid you did my friend .... nailed it !!! blessings
These videos are the best ones I've found as a resource for upgrading, etc. I've rewired a Les Paul, Tele, and a Strat HSS using these videos and it has all worked out perfectly. Thank you for the tutorials.
Hey have you ever tried doing a hsh config? I’m kinda new to all this stuff and I wanted to build my own guitar
One more piece of constructive critique. Because you added the resistors into the circuit, which I am really intrigued by for wanting to adjust the overall tone of the Strat I’ve been working on, it would be very, very helpful if you could provide a before and after video of the tone/sound of your completed Strat.
I definitely agree
Thank you so much, my Strat is back to life and the resistors are such a good addition.
I’ve been trying to do this for years, thanks to you I finally put it together
Do you have a sound demo?
May I ask what the wattage and tolerance of the 470k resistors should be ? Thank you in advance !!!
Just done that step by step as a complete beginner and it worked out perfectly. Thanks for that tutorial :)
Nice...you got some good soldering skills too. Precise and laying down just enough solder for a solid connection. Def going to check this diagram out for my strat.
Man, thank you so much for making this Video ... It helps a lot! Not too much one this on TH-cam, And this is by far the best ! Appreciate the step by step tutorial and your explanations ! cheers, Hang on
I did the "9 way Strat" the other day...from your instructions. Happy to report it all worked :o)
That’s great to hear - might have to do a video on that too.
@Chris Mahoney ....very good.... lots of tone choice. I made it for my Daughter. I put it into a 1996 Squire (YN6*) with some AP VooDoo pups.
This diagram is great, thank you so much bro, BTW it results Fender and Seymour Duncan use different polarities so you get a hum cancelling effect. This should be taken on consideration when combining pickup brands or when using vintage pickup models
Hi Alfredo, I'm a Newbie when I switch to single coil and humbucker combined selection, I lose volume is that because of the polarities. I also have Fender single coil and Seymour Duncan humbucker. When you changed the black hot wire with the green what do you do with the black hot wire. thanks in advance.
@@vasco2109 Hi, there will always be a difference in volume when combining single coils and humbuckers, a remedy to this is to use hotter single coils or colder humbuckers.
This is a fairly complicated circuit so when I wrote this comment I got confused and all I did by swapping the wires was to make the polarity of the pickups the same so I actually eliminated the hum cancelling feature of RWRP (Reverse Winding Reverse Polarity pickups), but if you want a more in depth explanaiton of why that happened I invite you to read the following information I took from Seymour Duncan´s official page:
Every pickup coil has two properties that affect how they will sound when they are combined with others. These properties are called phase and polarity. Phase is the direction current travels through the pickup, and polarity is the direction of the magnetic field. With both properties, there are only two options. Phase can either be “top coming” or “top going”, and polarity can either be “south” or “north.”
A typical application of these principles is with single coil pickups. One interesting property of single coils is that depending on their phase and polarity, it may be possible for them to be hum cancelling when combined. Modern Fender guitars are typically wired in such a way. The key to a strong, full tone with hum cancelling is to combine single coil pickups that have both opposite phase and opposite polarity. If one pickup is north polarity, top going, the other must be south polarity, top coming. This is why most Strat middle pickups and Tele neck pickups are what is known as reverse wind, reverse polarity, or RWRP for short. With a RWRP middle pickup in a Strat, for example, you will get hum cancelling in positions 2 and 4 on a 5-way switch.
Humbuckers all operate on this principle. The two coils have opposite wind and opposite polarity. When combined, you get a fat, meaty tone and no hum. Splitting a humbucker will, of course, bring back the hum so when combining Seymour Duncan "single coils" and Fender single coils you have to have in mind that Seymour’s regular pickups are equivalent to Fender’s RWRP, and vise versa so you will get a hum cancelling effect
It all started when Seymour decided to base his single coils on the original Fender single coils from the 1950’s, which were south, top going. At some point in the 60’s, Fender decided to change their single coils to be north, top coming.
The most common reason for two single coils to be out of phase is that one of them is wired backwards. The lead that was supposed to be connected to ground is connected to the output, and vise versa. If you get phase cancellation when combining two single coils, the easiest cure is to swap the lead wires on one of them (not both, or you will just have the same problem).
Bottom line: if you want two coils to be in phase and hum cancelling, you will need one of them - and only one of them - to be RWRP.
@@alfredoabrego3474 thank you Alfredo very informative
Do you need that super switch to use both 22 and 47 caps or would that also be fine with a normal 5 way switch?
Great explanation I hadn't seen such an enlightening video with this selector switch yet
Another amazingly helpful video - best instruction with rationale anywhere on this subject. Thank you.
Thanks a ton for this video! Used it to bring a strat dear to me back to life.
Thanks for sharing,I got my questions answered!!!
This is an amazing video, thank you so much for making this. Is there any way to add a mini toggle switch to the circuit to split the bridge pickup coils while in position 1? I’d like to have a more traditional position 1 option too.
This is the one I am searching for a long time. Currently fixing my HSS strat copy and will make the bridge tone control totally separate. Thanks!
I like how you did the work and position wise this setup makes total sense. One thing though, might want to change the numbering scheme on the switch drawings so as to match the standard switch positions with the connections being made. However, there might be those that like to put the bridge at the far end and the neck in board and it probably doesn't make too big a difference. Just thought I'd mention it. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback - have moved on from numbering switch lugs as everyone has different numbers in their head. Have a great Christmas 🎅
Good Morning! You have no idea how much this video helped me a lot. Thank you for this excellent content, I'm from Brazil and I've been looking for a solution for this link for days. Thank you very much
Thank you so much!!! I am building an all-fender malmsteen inspired hss strat with a JB Jr. in the bridge then 2 single coils, and this video will be priceless when it comes time to do the wiring! Phenomenal work with this video.
no worries Miles, it is a tricky circuit to get right so I hope the video helps you in your project. Have fun with it!
@@SixStringSupplies thanks for your input which is appreciated , but what about the same wiring with a simple 2 wire humbucker ?? thanks John
I had no idea that the damp sponge ruined the soldering iron by lowering the temperature, thanks for that
This is awesome!!! An HSS Strat is on my list of build projects. I wanted to try doing it with an auto coil split in position 2.

Made this mod. to my mexican strat, glad I did, sounds great. Lotta work, less than 100 bucs D.I.Y.
Do you have sound demo?
Sorry for the question. I'm about to do this wiring in my fender strat HSS with Suhr pickups. What types are the pots? CTS A500K, or B500K and B250K? I'm soo confused about this
Thanks from Chile
Very cool, will this be the same wiring for mini humbucker single single? and what will be the treble bleed's cap/resistor value if it's added?
Excellent video!
How about 1 single coil and 1 humbucker with 1 tone/1 volume and a Gibson style 3/way switch? What changes should I do to this wiring? Any suggestions please?
are the resistors 1 watt, 1/2 watt, 1/4 watt? Which 470k ones are you using
Is it possible to combine this wiring with the 9-way wiring, using push-pull pots, so that all of the 9 ways are available, but also having option of the bridge pickup being either full or split coil?
Also, will the option of middle coil & bridge split coil be humbucking?
Last...if the combination of 9-way push-pull (tones) & Super Strat wiring is possible, will the option of neck & bridge pickup split be humbucking? I ask this because it is my understanding that the middle S pickup on Strats is reverse wound from the bridge & neck single-coil pickups. But, would it be reverse from the single split coil of a humbucker bridge pickup??? And, if not, is this achievable by reversing the hookup of the "start" & "finish" bridge pickup wires???
Hi, this is an excellent video, and I've done a few of these. However, with the most recent wiring, in position #2 (bridge split + middle), it sounds muffled. Any idea what might cause this? Also, of the two tone contols, which ones are funtional with each position? Thanks!
My position 2 also sounds "muffled". Not sure why
@@The_Jesmaybe must be out of phase.
@@johnwelwacnisen948 actually yea, swapped the red and white wires(iirc) and, boom.
@@johnwelwacnisen948 OK, How do you correct this on #2? Thx,,,
@@lvgeorge u need to swap the ground wire to the one going to the switch.
Also can you use all 250K pots and omit the resistors all together? I have a Seymour Duncan stacked HUmbucker in my bridge right now working on 250k pots and it sounds fine but I need to add the super switch to coil split the humbucker
Criminally underrated channel. You’ve saved my bacon a few times. Good man. Bless you. Do you ship to the states.
Thanks! Yes we do...
Brilliant video plus pictures best ever. Well done this has been a great help thank you.👌👍🎸
Glad it was helpful!
Hi, friend. if you want to add trible bleed to HSS wiring, what is a good size? 0.22J or 0.47J?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Sorry, can you explain how can I put a treble bleed to this circuit? Because there're so many types...
Hello! Quick question, my guitar does not have this type of selector switch. My guitar has a import switch where all the lugs are on the same side. Do I need to ground the body of the switch as well?
Wow very nice tutorial I’m about to wire my guitar I have a modern telecaster humbucker on the bridge and 2 single coils would this set up would work on my thanks for your reply really appreciate
Hi there! I've been watching your tutorial on how to build a Super Strat which I did for a Mexican Fender that has, obviously a Humbucker with 2 Single Coils. Question: can these Caps with 600vs. can be used on others Pickups projects? Thanks
Hi there! I did that S.S. project and it came out perfect. I'm wondering if you have that same tutorial for a S.S.S. coils ? or is the same order for the 3 Single coils? Thanks 😊
Thank you so much for these videos. I am currently rewiring my guitars. I have a couple questions: Does it matter what brand of resistors and capacitors you use for wiring? There are so many on Amazon to choose from. Could you possibly provide a little more input on what to look out for? Thank you in advance!
Great vid. Can you explain why you connect different positions together with staples. What is it doing? Im a newb so sorry for the question
You’re a wiring wizard!
good day.. i have a fender mim with hss pickups and S1 switch that split the coil of the humbucker.. im looking for a video in your channel using the S1 pushed will still split the humbucker but will include bridge&neck, series combinations, that is like fender usa S1 wiring.. i just looked for diagrams, videos but i cannot find.. hope you cn help me.. i just want to make my strat sound diffrent when S1 switch is pushed not just coil split. hope you can help me..
Olá!
gostaria de saber se você usou A ou B nos potenciômetros.
parabéns pelo video!
So does this wiring make it possible for the humbucker to have a tone control? Nice way to keep the wiring very neat and orderly.
do you have a link where i can purchase 470k resistors? please and thank you
Awesome video! Thanks for posting. What temperature do you run your soldering iron?
Thanks for the great video! do you prefer the method of using 3 500K pots and one 470K ressitor?
Thank you so much. Excellent instructions!
Can i used this wiring guide with my bridge pickup is SD JB and my neck n mid pickup is SD CoolRails?
Hey, thanks for this video! I have a question about left handed volume pots; do I need to reverse the wiring on the pots?
Thank you! just a newbie here and would definitely use this as Guide, May I know if the pots you've used are Audio or Linear Taper type?
Just finished this setup tonight. Everything works as it should, but the humbucker is coming through with a lot of treble and sounds nasally. Any idea what I did wrong?
Amazing and Thank you! One question: I'm building an HSH strat... where do the signal, ground, and north/south wires go from the neck pickup when it's a Humbucker? Thanks.
Love this. What component is in place to prevent the humbucker from losing volume/dynamics) when the spit is active? I know sometimes with push pull pots you pose some volume and depth when the Humbucker is split. PRS guitars come with a resistor jumped from the put to the back of the put instead of a wire. Also, What position allows for the Humbucker (unsplit) and the middle single coil? Thanks again!
Great video! Can you tell me what size bus wire you used in the example? 20 gauge looks like.
Nice video. question: I have a standard neck and a rwrp middle pickup, which coil should be always on on the humbucker for hum cancelling when split in position 2? You have the inner coil. Would i need the outer coil of the humbucker always on in my case and how would the wiring be different if so?
Cool Mod, I wanna do one more mod, can you help me?
For HSS, with 5-Way switch, what I want is to now how I should to connect my wiring to split and use the South PickUp from my Humbucker. Thank you!!
1- Bridge (Humbucker)
2- Coil Split (North PickUp) & middle. (Like you show in this video)
3- Coil Split (South PickUp) & Neck
4- Bridge & Neck
5- Neck
I figured it out now... And it worked perfectly!
...the data regarding the sponge/brass shavings was very informative...been using both, now I know I only need the brass shavings...feel a bit dopey for not realizing the damp sponge would lower the iron's temp...thanks for the tip...
also, how about a video on how to both coil split this set up as well as use a push/push on the Tone pot wired in Parallel...would the latter not allow for the single coil tone with hum cancelling as well?...thank you again...not sure I understand how the 5 way switch will split the coils...
I'm perplexed by this as well... if you put both the coil taps on one switch pol and the hot on one switch pole how the heck is it splitting the coils?
I know this is an old video but it was just what I was looking for. Will this work with a regular Fender 5 way switch? Meaning using the resistor method. The Fender switch doesn't have as many lugs
I'm only using one volume and only one tone (2 pots only = personal preference and big hands hit my volume if too close). I got a super switch too, but i don't know if it'll have enough poles or if i should look into something else, I looked into resistors and I'm drawing out my schematic... When i pair the tapped humbucker of the bridge with the middle single coil pickup, would the bridge benefit if it now jumped to a "250k" pot circuit, or should i keep it away from the resistors and only worry about the neck and middle pickups being "fooled" by the resistors. I was wondering since only one coil is activated instead of it being a full on humbucker. I have no problem with figuring out a schematic for this, but it's the tone and the output of the pickup i was worried about. Will it be better for a split humbucker (now a "single-coil") to be on a "250k" pot circuit then switch over to a 500k pot when both coils are activated? Maybe less harsh audibly? I've been doing this for years and I'm still learning, lol I just need an opinion and I can figure it out from here and i will start drawing out for myself. Thanks beforehand for reading my messy and convoluted questing that i probably could have shortened if i wasn't burnt out from brainstorming. lol
Another great vid Ed. Now i want to get another Strat to mod :)
Thanks Adrian. Yeah it’s always tempting!
I know you didn't fit a treble bleed ,but I have read that with low resistance pickups it's recommended. The resistance on mine are 5-6k on the singles in the neck and middle and 8-9k on the Humbucker in the bridge.
Great infromative video. Thank you so much.
I have 7 lug import switch. How should i do right wiring on switch?
Great video mate cheers for posting. Question I'm currently making this mod to my fender strat but want to add a push/pill coil tap to the humbacker any ideas on A. best way to achieve this and B could I use a 470K resister on the split coil to get the single coil tone right? Appreciate your thoughts/.
I wired everything exactly as described (which was a bit weird because my guitar is a leftie).
Checked the diagram multiple times, but i only have output on the humbucker. Both single coils are dead. Any ideas?
If I want to experiment with the humbucker tone in position 2 between split and full humbucker, can I simply desolder the split coil wires and tie them back so it does not split or do I need to perform another step? Thanks!
great video, can i use cts push/pull pot as dual tone for bridge?how this will affect wiring?
Very nice job! You demonstrated very well!! This was just what I was looking for!! Thanks!!
Awesome video. Thank you. I'll be referring back regularly.
Awesome video!!! Will be great to see that 5 way super switch on a SSS configuration, something like this:
1- Bridge
2- Bridge & Middle
3- Middle
4- Bridge & Neck (just love the tone of this combination)
5- Neck
thats the configuration youd get if you didnt have the coil split.....
So I followed this wiring with an HSS Pacifica and the humbucker works when split, but not when its selected by itself. Any thoughts?
This is a fabulous tutorial...Thank you so much...if I were to add a push pull pot for the Humbucker how will this effect the wiring?...complete novice here by the way :)
Your videos are the best, explains alot, but is there a way to incorporate this way for hss strat with a cts 500k audio taper push pull pot for a boost if up or something that won't leave the split coil without tone control or a blend/bleed between neck pos 5 or 4?
Thanks again for putting the time and everything thing needed to make your vids happen, it's time consuming! Respect.
Thank you sensei. Great video. I’m having similar difficulties trying to wire my 3 single coil humbuckers so that when I switch to single coil a resister drops the 500K vol pot down closer to 250. I opted to use a fender S-1 switch but found that the one of the tone knobs need to be changed as well. Getting a little more complicated.
Would you recommend using linear pots on tone controls as well as volume.I have heard CT S pots are very loose and turn easily.
what are 1M pots used for? i put 3 of em in my HH setup even though i know 500Ks are good enough, but i don't see them in videos. i want my sound to be as bright as possible, and i'm thinking about moving from HH to HSS, can i use 500Ks for all 3? will continuing to use 1M for all 3 give me the brightest sound?
also, what is the purpose of the capacitors? do you need .022 for 250Ks and .047 for 500Ks? what capacitor do you need for 1Ms? why doesn't the volume knob need one? and why do you ground all 3 pots together?
Have you ever wired an HSS up so that it is exclusively the series/parallel humcancelling positions? So 500k pots, 0.047 cap, on the blade P1=Neck and Middle in series, P2 Neck and Middle in Parallel, P3 Neck and South coil of the humbucker in parallel (Tele middle sound), P4=Middle and North coil of humbucker in parallel, P5=humbucker (series/parallel setting comes from DP/DT on second tone control. Seems this would be the more useful sounds from both a double HB guitar and the 3 SC Strat with a little Tele in there.
I have that switch, its possible to wire SD JB and two SM hot rails, second position spit the bridge and middle, also the third position bridge and tech humbugger, like les Paul with the switch in the middle?
Hey great video
What if I wanted to do this with 1 tone 1 volume with a hss Strat ....would I use 500k pots and a .22ufl cap with 470k resistors .
Any help would be awesome
I'm planning to build a guitar for my son. He likes my music; 60s-80s. So my plan is a HHH Strat set up to split each humbucker and the have phase switches for each when playing the singles. So, three on-off-on switches to split each HB, and three switches to change the phase when in single. Much like the Red Special build by Brian May, and ability to use all three singles like David Gilmore, all three Humbuckers like John Lennon's Rickenbacker.
I don't expect exact matches sound wise, just close. I know treble boosters and other mixers will be needed. I'm still looking for a good schematic for laying it out. Any help would be appreciated.
How would this be modified if you were wiring it to 2 pots only (1 volume and 1 tone)? I can’t seem to find any diagrams or videos...any tips would be appreciated
Its waesome wiring! what's this metal stem what you put connecting the three pots and the lugs?
This wiring can be used like in Suhr guitars in the second position the humbucker works like a single coil?
thanx buddy!
Thanks a lot, but I do the first version, and position 2(bridge and middle) are too quiet compared to position 4, even when volumes are equal separately, can you help me?
Great video! Will this change the single coils sound? (Neck & Middle)
Great wiring job. Very informative. I would have liked to actually hear each of the 5 positions played. So maybe next time?
Thanks for these great videos.
Thank you for nice tutorial! I am wondering how this would work with stacked single coils?
Isn't it possible to do the same without a multiswitch? I found a diagram that implements the same circuit with the usual 5-way switch.
Thanks Man 👏 Your the best on TH-cam 👏👏✌️🙏
This is an amazing video. Thanks for taking the time to do this, man. Just to ask, I have a one volume, one tone, setup with 500k pots. Would a 3rd 470k resistor be required to connect lugs 1-4 on the tone pot connection to ground so the singles "see" a 250 tone pot? Or is it enough that the singles see a 250 volume pot?
Thanks!
Hello Ed,
what do I do if I have an EMG SA in the neck position wich needs 25k pots? Where do i put Which Pot? (And the rest: Bridge Fender Shawbucker, Middle Seymour Duncan SSL-5 RWRP.)
Thanks.
What if my humbucker doesn't do split coil? WHat should I do differently? THanks
thanks for this! I have been trying to wrap my head around how the coil split on position two works, was wondering if you or someone could explain. since the north and south of the humbucker are soldered together and are both active in position 1 how does the switch know to only use one side in position 2 when it is combined with the middle pickup? If the two humbucker wires went to different terminals or something like that, I think it would make sense to me.
Hey ! Thanks for the tutorial ! Which potentiometer do we choose in case of a one volume, one tone HSS circuit ?
What is you magnet polarity ? I have the same wiring with Lollar blonde + SD Pearly gates but have an issue that on P2 HB Split and middle have the same polarity and I have hum ....
I only got one 250k tone control for my tele, will it work right for the hambucker I'm going to add please?
At 37:23 when you test the coil split why didnt you test the other coil to show silence? I was waiting for that because I just wired a superswitch as per a Dimarzio diagram and in position 4 where it is SUPPOSED to be coil cutting I get signal from both of my coils when I tap them. Was hoping to see what you got from your silenced coil
In the first position the 2 coils of the humbucker are in series, ie traditional humbucking output. In position 2 there is only one coil output as the other coil has ground on both sides. Which coil that is depends on which one you've selected. Unless otherwise noted Dimarzio's wiring scheme goes north coil, from hot to finish, red/black. The south coil is green/white. I hope that's of some help anyhow.
Where do you solder the tremolo and output jack wires?? also my single coils have 3 wires (2 black and 1 yellow for each (where do these get soldered?
