Been playing on and off for years, but completely new to bluegrass. Played rock mostly, so never encountered crosspicking. Didn't realise a C chord could sound so interesting. Many thanks for the video.
Clawhammer banjo has a similar variation where the motion is generated in the wrist or the elbow. With flat pick guitar I try to play similarly to Watson, focusing more on dynamics and keeping the hand relaxed.
You’re a killin guitarist but it was difficult to follow for a bluegrass beginner like me. Could you do a lesson where you really slow it down and explain it?
Hi Brandon, Your videos are very good and you sound great but without putting too fine a point on it, in actuality, your technique bears more of a resemblance to Bryan Sutton's than to that of Tony Rice.
Eh, cross picking is a strict down down up pattern.. I'm not sure what this is, but for cross picking, take it from the man who invented it, and check out George Shuffler teaching it.

It's not a beginner lesson,.it clearly states, Intermediate..
To me it seems like a travis picking pattern, but with a pick, which actually looks a lot harder
James Allen Shelton was one of the best at cross picking.
Lessons here just keep on getting BETTER thks so much for this one. Just what I need.
8:29 start learning
9:30 give up
Nice...
Ever heard of Molly Tuttle ? 🔥
Brandon has a video on one of her licks
Yes, since about 10 yrs ago....

Can't find the tabs for those picking?!? Does someone can help me?
Would be nice if you would mention the kind of pick you use, I do cross-picking also and it's not all the pick that works the best for me.
Hi Larry - I use the Dunlop Primetone pick.
Heavy gage?
@@larrykenney7091 Elixir HD light :)
Primetones are the best.
Great lesson. Just wondering, do you favour a particular style in cross-picking eg alternating, or down, down, up etc?
Your lessons kick ass dude
Brandon what for pick do you use here, it's not the Dunlop 208 i think...
Primetone he said. Probably 1.4mm or so.

what kind of pick are you using? thx
I am using the Blue Chip CT 55 round bevel.
Brandon Johnson thank you Brandon
@@BrandonJohnsonGuitar Blue Chip CT 55 comes up as an LED light on Amazon. lol.
With economy picking and hybrid this just seems like so much work to just play broken chords
i've heard it's meant to mimic the sound of a fingerpicked banjo
It adds clean fill on slow songs that strumming would only muddy.
thanks!

didn't even explain the picking pattern wtf
Too much talking
Must be tough to be your age and have the attention span of hummingbird. You and the younger generation have that limitation and it shows.
you never explain what you are doing. TEN THUMBS DOWN!!!! my eye can't see what you are doing
Can't focus hey? Lol
Good lesson F'd up by a guy who wants to yse a Capo,.....
Capos are widely used in bluegrass, or haven't you noticed that? There are more songs in A, Bb or B than G.
Get someone to show you how to use one.
