    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Baltus (Michael Gambon) tells the tale of how the Hessian Horseman (Christopher Walken) was killed with his own sword.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Washington Irving's tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman gets a few new twists in a screen adaptation directed by Tim Burton. In this version, Ichabod (Johnny Depp) is a New York City detective whose unorthodox techniques and penchant for gadgets make him unpopular with is colleagues. He is sent to the remote town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of bizarre murders, in which a number of people have been found dead in the woods, with their heads cut off. Local legend has it that a Hessian ghost rides through the woods on horseback, lopping off the heads of the unsuspecting and unbelieving. Ichabod refuses to believe in this legend, convinced that there must be a logical explanation for the murders. In time, Ichabod becomes smitten with a local lass, Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci), who is the sweetheart of the burly Brom Bones (Casper Van Dien), and he becomes determined to capture the murderer to prove his bravery and win her heart. Christopher Walken, Jeffrey Jones, and Christopher Lee highlight the supporting cast; Lee's appearance is particularly apt, since Burton has cited the Hammer films of the 1960s as a major influence in making this film. Andrew Kevin Walker and Tom Stoppard contributed to the screenplay.

He only fled because of the second shot fired at him. I liked him very much as a character. He had more depth than a lot of people realized. The innocents he kills are when he is being controlled by the witch. When he gets his free will back, he defeats the witch. I don't think he's an inherently evil character. The only people he kills of his own free will are enemy soldiers and the witch that was controlling him and forcing him to kill innocent people.

This was a complex and badass Horseman. In life he was an utter blood knight who lived for the thrill of battle, but he had a code of honor and saw no need for killing innocents. He also dearly loved his horse as a lifelong companion. And in his final stand, he managed to kill most of the hunting party that had been pursuing him all by himself. You would only find a deadlier revenant in Jason Voorhees himself.

Going back and rewatching this film, I’ve picked up on a few things. Despite his love of carnage and chaos, the Horseman had a code of honor. He could’ve easily murdered the kids instead of calmly going “shhhh”, but he didn’t. Even after the little girl broke the stick he didn’t attack them. Which means that later in the film, Lady Van Tassel makes him break that code by murdering the unarmed Killian family and the other lady that was pregnant.

Washington Irving became friends with the Van Tassels and wrote the short story with their name in it. There really was a Catrina Van Tassel, but she lived before the Rev. I always interpreted the reason that the Hessian only growled and yelled in "Sleepy Hollow" was for three reasons. 1) He filed his teeth down to sharp points and therefore, any vowel that consisted of using his teeth against his tongue or lips would cause excruciating pain. 2) He spoke High German (being from Hessen) and most of the Sleepy Hollow residents were Dutch and therefore would not know his language even if some parts were recognizable. 3) It makes him all the more less human and therefore so much more sinister. 4) Could you imagine Walken trying to do a German accent?

This part was really well done. I like how the Hessian goes down fighting like a boss before finally getting slaughtered. Battle seems relatively low budget part but because not the focus and story being told flashback it's still effective.

So, what EXACTLY did the Horseman do wrong? He fought the same as all the other Hessians, but did it out of passion. He made a point of cutting enemies heads off, which is the quickest and most painless way to die. He obviously cared deeply for his horse, Daredevil, and was hurt when Daredevil was mortally wounded. He didn't attack the little girls who gave him away. After his death, the Horseman only killed people while under control of the witch. When he gains back control, he kills the witch and drags her to Hell, freeing the village. What did the Headless Horseman actually do wrong?

Carnage comes with his job. He does what he likes as his career.
But he doesn't seem that bad outside of battles and outside his job. Seeing how he, while being the Headless Horseman, is willing to spare the lives of the ones who gets in his way as long as they don't annoy him too much.
