I played in this qualifier as well. And fortunately got to meet Matt. He couldn’t have been more gracious. I Appreciated him taking time to chat with me after the round.
I bet he’s a super guy!
Can we stop acting like this is the QUALIFIER. It's not. It's a PRE qualifier to see if you can GET TO THE QUALIFIER. There's quite a big difference in the two.
@@upanddownfor5961settle down. Go outside, look into the sun and smile for once holy fuck
@@upanddownfor5961still a mental challenge and still requires a high level of skill to make it to a Monday. Yes anyone with a low index can enter but still a hard thing to do! Also provides a great source of income to the event so it’s good all around! Why do you have such a negative view of this being a pre qualification event I am just curious.
@@mberens1010 great to meet you as well.
I think playing competitive golf is a mindset. You know you have the game and just have to execute it. Hats off to you, Matt, for gutting it out and keep going forward and keep on keeping on. A lot of people would want to quit. You never quit! Good job! You'll get there, and thank you for the video.
Matt, you are a shining example of a good man, a great golfer, and terrific communicator. There's no doubt you have the mental toughness to get your mindset in the right place to be successful in the qualifying process. Thank you for all the great content you've posted over the years and I think we all want to see a lot more!
Hey Matt! What I love about this is that you didn’t even have to post the video to begin with yet you still have the integrity to question if that was a missed stroke.
I do NOT think you took a swing at the ball and here’s why.
You moved the putter downward and then made an upward motion while you were also bringing your left hand towards the grip to prepare for the actual attempt.
It was a fluid motion and not one that struck me as anything but an ordinary or common act.
It’s close enough that I would weigh feedback of others, but the transparency is awesome and why I love your content!
I saw the same thing as you DMC. Matt simply reset his position in my opinion.
@@dmc0015 it's the exact same motion as the movement to tap it in. He should have called for an official nor did he inform his playing oartners
it looks odd, like it *could have* been an attempt, but id have to agree it wasn't given the totality of the action. It looked like he was just frustrated and resetting for a simple tap in, rather than an actual attempt. But this is a great learning moment to be caution with club movement around the ball. Always take your time and avoid flippant actions. At least ill try to keep that in mind, even though ive never played competitively and am a max handicap golfer.
Yep i commented also how it looked like he thought better of just walking a tap in stroke at the last second and decided to set first.
It looked like to me, that Matt was just going to one hand tap it in, and realized at the last second that he should two hand putt it(take it seriously since he is in a tournament). No penalty as he never really tried to hit the ball. Just looked awkward.
I love golf, I played since I was 5 yo. I was in a motor vehicle accident in 2022. Broke both wrists, pelvis, and lost sight in the left eye. I am starting golf again from scratch. Loooove the game. Struggles are a part of life, but you need to always follow your goals. Keep up the good work. - A Crushed Canadian.
Your words about the whole experience meant a lot to me, I'm glad you shared the whole experience but especially your thoughts about going through these hard things and how you faced it all. I really appreciate it Matt!
Hi Matt, this is pure gold for all levels of golfers. It’s part of why we love/hate and struggle with golf regardless of handicap in a competitive format. It’s called life! At 16 I hit the height I am today at 6’3” and was junior champion at my home course. At 18, still playing of scratch, I entered some big pro/am tournaments here in Australia and by the time I was 21 I was struggling to make the cut and decided it was simply too hard as I couldn’t cope with the pressure so I quit as it wasn’t fun anymore. At 50 something now, I’ve faced the ups and downs life provides. I’ve been playing golf again for about 10 years and am happy with my mid single digit handicap as now this game has become another coping mechanism as I know the little white ball isn’t going to go where I want it to 100% of the time and I’m ok with this. Just living life on life’s terms and satisfied with knowing golf is no different to basically anything else. Great work, please keep it up.
There’s a book called Zen Golf that is about mental game and how to prepare and keep your brain in the round. I thought it was pretty interesting at least. Keep it up!
Have Zen Putting as well. They have made the game fun again by not living or dying with every shot.
I’m 75. Started playing golf at age 65. Mainly because of you I have not quit and am a solid bogey golfer. I will get to a 9 or 10 handicap. If not this year then in 2025.
🫡
Keep up the work Matt, luv wot u do!!
congrats man! pulling for you. Whats your driver swing look like? Personally, I can out drive my driver with my pitching wedge. Not sure that says more about my pitch or my driver... but im leaning towards the latter.
@@bermchasin alright cat in the hat would you like a club, or a bat?
Keep going!!!
Dude, I have been watching your content for probably four years now. I have enjoyed it from an entertainment standpoint, but in situations like this where I’m watching you actually compete I understand you and I respect you. I know what it’s like out there as most of us do. Thanks for going through what we all go through but doing it publicly that takes a lot of balls big guy. Keep it up and thank you.
I've watched more TH-cam golf and golf instruction videos than a person should. This particular video is my favorite and you're my favorite instructor. I will be there in person when you do join the PGA Tour Champions.
I’ve really enjoyed the qualifying videos. They show us all how hard it is to level up in golf. Even when the physical skills are there, making a jump to the next level is a struggle and we appreciate taking this challenge on through your efforts. Don’t quit, you have the ability to qualify! Just analyze the rounds and errors and continue working to improve that part of your game. If it was easy, everyone could do it!
Haters gonna hate, because they have never had the balls to put it all on the line in high level tourney play, let alone on camera for the world to see. Keep doing these gualifiers, its fun to watch and we're rooting for you!
At 15:30 "We're going to hit every green on the back side" the quick no way head shake was priceless. Good video!
Videos like this are why you are my favorite to watch. I love how real you are and putting yourself out there showing things aren’t always rainbows and butterflies. Get them next time but don’t stop trying!
Please keep on your journey to overcome your performance anxiety Matt. As a formal golfer myself I know the struggles of being under pressure. And seeing you make these videos are a true inspiration!!
Matt, can you have a caddie for these qualifiers? If so I think a caddie would serve you well. They can talk you thru the round, calm your nerves, get you refocused, may see a different way to play a shot, help read the greens. Plus, maybe the caddie can handle the duties of shooting as well, leaving you to focus more on the golf. Just food for thought.
Thanks Matt to share your emotions and your golf. What you explaining is really true : we need to go through and avoid difficulties and bad feeling.
We all know what you say. you're a great guy !
Brice, from France.
I started watching your channel for a couple years as you were on of the people I watched when I got back into golf along with golfholics. You are an amazing golfer have a great swing and skill. Sometimes we have rough days. Keep up the hard work and go for your dreams. This was a great video.
The person that needed to see this video is me Matt. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. I’m also on my golf journey.
Just came across my new favorite TH-cam golfer. Thank bro........great personality and very informative at the same time.
Watching from the UK started golfing a few weeks ago you're channel has been a massive help and your mental struggles i relate, great watch
Matt of ALL the youtube golfers you have BY FAR the best mindset and temprament to succeed. And you swing and strike the ball so consistantly. You'll reach your goal. My opinion.
I'm a pastor, and you comments sound like one of my sermons :) ... So encouraging and inspiring!! Love your channel and your spirit behind your content! Keep it up!!
Matt, you nailed it early on the mental approach undermining you. These rounds don't define you. They inform you. Keep swinging!
Having played in a number of qualifiers, I know the grind. My lesson learned is get rid of all distractions, there’s plenty of them created by others. Secondly, shot shaping is a killer. Aim where the ball needs to go and hit it straight there, no draws or fades unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. Finally, one practice round on a course you’ve never been on is not enough. There’s a reason play you better on your home course.
This is great advice as a former grinder who made a few events you couldn’t be more right!
I give you so much credit for putting yourself out there with the added pressure of making it all public. Tremendous respect shout out to you Matt! Love the channel, love the content and enjoy the game so much more because of you and this channel! All the best!
Matt, playing with your weekend buddies and tournament golf are completely different, keep grinding and it’s one shot at a time, and being a goldfish, forget about the previous shot, you keep grinding and I will keep watching! Love your videos!
Hi mate, Aussie subscriber here, first off I love your content, secondly your outlook for life is great.
Don't stress about the haters on TH-cam, your swing is really smooth so I have no doubt you will kill it next time, just keep on staying positive mate.
A man I admired greatly, for his wisdom, once said to me, 'there are two types of golfers, the ones who are constantly bound up in trying to improve their game, reduce their handicap and then beat themselves up for every bad shot/putt, then there those of us who enjoy playing golf.' Maybe if Matt could put himself in the second mind set he would be more mentally relaxed and play the good golf we all know he can play. Good luck in the next one Matt.
Letting us follow you on this journey is both entertaining and helpful in a number of ways! I appreciate you taking time to film this - even though being a TH-cam content creator has got to be worth at least 5 points on your HCP!❤❤
Best video you’ve made yet. Exposing your weaknesses and your mental thoughts during the round was very helpful in approaching my game mentally. Love it!!!
You definitely have the game to be out there competing. Everyone who has been watching you for any amount of time knows you needed this type of challenge to level up your game. Your typical content is making pars and birdies look easy.
Matt you’re the most honest you tuber, nobody hates you. I think you need to play 3 or 4 of these tournaments to get mentally ready. You will succeed. Keep up the great videos!
Keep it up Matt, you said it. The more often you do it, the more comfortable you will be. The bad breaks will come out in the wash. You can do it, love your channel.
It's all mental Matt. You definitely have the game. "Clear your mind, Luke. Use the Force!"😂
HANG IN THERE, Mr. Shortgame! Thank you for encouraging us through our challenges. I have the same issue in my game. We appreciate you trying to do what most of us couldn't.
This is truly the most entertaining golf channel on TH-cam
You clearly haven't seen Bryson's
@@davidparry8713 You're clearly irritating and annoying. I'm sure you have no friends
proud of you matt! you're a champ and an inspiration to the younger generation. This is how you grow as a person, as a competitor, and as a player
PLEASE,PLEASE, PLEASE keep doing these competitive round videos. I look forward to these videos more than any other content on TH-cam.
We're rooting for you man ! Before watching this, I thought you were just another youtube performance artist, but you have Real Game ! haha
Proud of you, been there know exactly what you are talking about, knowing there is better than that in you… you are my hero lets GO!!!
Hey Matt, everything you said in your talk about going through it really resonated with me and I just want to thank you for putting this out here. You seem like a real stand up guy.
Quitters never win...winners never quit!
You can't please everybody all the time.
You're living the dream brother...keep hammering 🔨
Love the videos, keep that head strong and the swing smooth brother
Excellent message in your narrative halfway through Matt! Gotta keep figy, that's how we get better at anything in this life. Well said buddy
Love Annbriar! So many great holes. I have been fortunate enough to play there several times. Channels like yours have been part of the reason I have drastically improved my own mental game and lowered my handicap to single digits. Rounds like this happen to all of us-“that’s golf.”
Hi Matt. Clearly you have demonstrated time and time again that you DO have the skills and ability. The more you chase it, the easier the head game gets.
Matt - Good on you for showing the difficulties you're going through. It's encouraging to see the nerves and the mental difficulties are no different for someone of your talent level than they are for us higher handicap players. I'm looking forward to a video in the future of you making the cut!!!
Just don't quit Matt.
Stay humble, have fun. If ya get down just stop, take a deep breath and look around. Look where your at. On a beautiful golf course enjoying the day. How lucky are you. Stay humble and Thankful. God bless you !!
Matt, I truly enjoy watching your journey and it is the same for anyone playing any real round of golf. The fact that you video it and share it with the world makes it even more special. I love seeing what you do and I'm not sure if filming helps or hurts you as you are trying to do multiple things at a high level at the same time. Would love to play a round with you some time if you are in the B'ham area or want to meet in the middle. Also like to see how you have your bad holes but still aren't the last to tee off, meaning you aren't going through things alone.
This is the best video I have seen about the mental challenges of golf and to some extent, life in general. Thank you!!! For posting this!!!
Love the qualifier content. Much respect for putting yourself out there. Majority of golfers will not ever understand the difference between leisure & competition golf. Keep grinding!!
Thanks Matt. I’ve been a fan for a few years now and these are probably my favourite videos of yours. It’s really interesting to see the impact that pressure has on your game - it makes things relatable. I speak as someone who is unfortunately a bit of a hacker, especially if I put myself under pressure (tbh it doesn’t take much to put me under pressure ….. someone standing 60y away from me will do it! 🙄). Keep it going - we’re all rooting for you 👍
I'm rooting for you Matt. Remember, it's never a failure if you learned something from it. The struggle is real. Enjoy the journey.
Regarding the putt - I'm not gonna lie, it doesn't look good from the camera angle, however it also looks like you were bringing the putter up to grip with your other hand. I'm sure the other guys would have challenged it if they had issue with it. Only thing I can suggest is to never casually tap in one handed (if you do) even, if its only 1 inch from the hole. This way you will never find yourself being ambiguous and will remove all doubt. Your routine should be the same regardless on the distance of putt to maintain supreme consistancy and confidence. New to your channel, I'm definitely going to check out your other videos.
Just hit 40 and working toward the pipe dream of Champions as well! I get to really start next year once the kid starts school. Love seeing this!!!
Reminds me of the the few tournaments I’ve played. Weird rub of the green or a shank and I derail. I call those moments my Barney Fife moments. Almost spots before my eyes. Thanks for not quitting - For sharing your thoughts. They’re very helpful. You are right. Just have to get used to the arena. Killing the imposter syndrome only comes from exposure. Best of luck.
So profound! Thank you Matt, just don’t quit! Sobriety has been difficult, today is my birthday and you’re a great person and gift I received today! One day at a time my friend!
Really appreciate the video Matt - your honesty is disarming and much appreciated. This is the struggle we all go through! You'll get there, we're all behind you!
Matt, I really like this series! I love the grind. Sometimes it's frustrating, but I find that right when things seem their worst is just about when a step forward is near. Too bad they didn't have volunteers to mark your ball with a flag like in the big league. Losing a ball on a baby push really stinks, but such is golf...Keep up the good work!
Dude. This is a great video. Watch a lot of TH-cam golf, this is surprisingly one of my fav videos.
For what it's worth, I agree with others below -- I don't think you made a stroke at the ball on that tap-in.
It's "genuine" golf videos like this that I like the best, showing that you're human and that it IS a struggle. Thanks for letting us follow along with the good and the bad. I'll keep watching, and have every expectation of you getting through one of these qualifiers!
My buddy’s and I play this course at least once a yr. Beautiful golf course!! Thx for letting us in on your journey Matt!!
Matt. Good job hanging in there. It's tough. We've all been there. Every year the range for every PGA Tour player is in the mid0low 60s to well into the 80s. Hope to meet you down the road after I start my channel It's going to be about the physics of golf and course management. Hopefully we can do some videos together. I quit golf at 14 and didn't play for 33 years, Started back at age 47 and had my tour card in less than a year on some triple A tours in Asia. Played 15 years on the regular tour, Ready for senior tours now at age 67. Cheers.
Matt, this is my favorite video of yours You are our Rick Shiels, but with a much better attitude when things aren't going perfectly.
Great playing, Matt. You've got this!! I'm volunteering at the Champions Tour in St. Louis. Would have be an honor to seen you play. Keep up the great work..
Love the honesty and the attitude.. never stop posting these type videos.. they make a lot of us nod the head and say yep, I feel ya ‘!! Love the channel !
Much respect, Matt! Tough day. Great video to show to keep composure and handle adversity. Look forward to the next one!
Thanks for sharing, Short Game. That was so great to watch. You have a beautiful swing and a great attitude. I'm sure many guys like me, just trying to break 100, would love to be as good as you. Outstanding video - sound, visual, narrative - the whole thing. Nice.
Keep on pursuing your goal, Matt. You’ll get there, you are a very good golfer. We’ve seen it in your past videos. Everyone goes through phases and this is just one of them. Love your channel in your videos… Keep it up hold your chin your day will come when you achieve your goal. All the best of luck from Canada.
Matt, you're inspiring, everything you said and done and gone through, means a lot, to everyone, myself and many others out there are going through some rough times right now, you're playing a great role in helping to get us through it,as far as the golf game is concerned, you'll get there so long as you don't give up, Thanks Bro, keep it in grind mode 🔥🔥🔥🔥
😅Excellent honest real life video that millions of golfers can appreciate the challenges. Thanks for sharing the grind.
I feel your pain Matt, Mental game is hard enough during tournaments, then to do it on video for all to see would be scary. Never know what kind of feedback ppl going to give, but you do you man! I and many of us are always pulling for you to succeed. Great insight from this video!
I think it is great that you are going through this and document it for all of us that don't have the game to even try. Well done on the video.
Hi Matt I take a lot of inspiration from this film . It just shows how difficult this game of golf is & when I watch a scratch golfer having trials & tribulations it makes me realise as a high handicap player we haven't any right to expect a perfect round. Keep up posting the great Vids. P.S. love you guys.
Don't ever quit, brother!! You have it in you you just have to keep digging it out.
Just a good guy. Such a positive mental attitude and a good golfer too. Got a great driver. Keep going bud. Blessings.
Matt, I have the same problem of allowing a bad hole to ruin my game. Don't allow it to happen man. Stay in the moment. As I heard someone say recently 'let the past stay in the past, the future stay in the future and you stay in the present'. Easier said than done but so important. Love these videos and love your attitude. Stay well buddy.
Here’s a tip. It’s not about a general anxiety, it’s about understanding and trusting your swing. The anxiety is created by not totally understanding where the face is on every swing. When you get there the anxiety goes away and luck comes more often.
It’s really interesting to see how many of us are in different situations but the same situation. I am an awful golfer but every time I am on the course I feel like things are going well but a handful of things make it a grind. Seeing professionals and very good players struggle in their own way reminds me of just how insanely difficult this game can be.
Great video because we got to see you work through everything. Good TH-cam Creator videos are those where you can relate to the person and you did a great job in that respect. Also you did stroke it well - some tough breaks. Keep going.
Thank you Matt, I can relate to this, and it was an encouragement to me. Keep going onwards & upwards buddy 👍
Welcome to St. Louis area golf, the land of sticky greens! Annbriar is one of our favorite tracks and though it was a struggle hope you enjoyed the visit.
This is my favorite video on this channel so far. Great messages. Well done. 🙏
Hey Matt. Awesome video. Hang in there. I've been playing on mini tours for 3 years and the wins will come. You gotta keep at it week after week. There is no let up (not even the off season!) Pro tip: fairways and greens 😄
Matt, not to worry. Golf is 90% physical and the other half is all mental. You will get there. We are all along for the journey.
Great video Matt. It’s fun experiencing the journey with you. Hope you keep doing these qualifiers and keep documenting!
Hey Matt…much respect for your grinding it out, no doubt you got some bad breaks and bounces but you definitely have the right attitude. I believe all golfers under the crucible of competitive golf go through this , (what I sometimes call panic mode), when you know what you’re capable of but it's not happening on that day. The mental game can be the toughest thing to deal with, but I feel you’re going to break through soon. Cheers MikeR 🇨🇦.
love what you said at the end about embarrassment! that rings true in may of us
Keep doing what you’re doing Matt, the good times will come I’m sure! Loving the energy, stay positive 👍🏻
Thanks as always for the video Matt. I love watching you in this format and I believe it’s only a matter of time before we get to see you climb the ranks on these qualifiers.
22:45 I love how the purple shirt did the oh come on lean back 😂
Don't listen to the haters bro. They're sitting on their couches. You're out there. Repetition is key to learning. The more you do it the easier it will become. Rock on!!! BTW who doesn't like a dude named Jesus? Right!?!
Might be your best video yet. Keep grinding, my friend! You are crushing life and soon will be doing the same in a Tour event! This I have no doubt.
been watching you since the mat and net in cali backyard days! Unless you practice every day and play every day. We can't expect to be the best version of ourselves. By practice I mean, do you have a team in place? Sports Pys? Recovery? Golf coach? If the answer is no, then you did great. Golf isn't about how we enjoy the high moments. It's about the low and how we chose to navigate them. Keep grinding man! Always good content and what I consider an OG and always stays true to his craft.
Wow 😮 12:20 in and you almost had me in tears 😭 What you said was very powerful, unselfish and you are correct…there are people whom need this openness and example of desire on a roller coaster 🎢 of life. I started playing golf again after taking 20 years off. My stepson wanted to give it a shot. I got addicted to the game and just wanted to find that zen 🧘 swing…being present with my swing and mind. I hit balls all winter long in the backyard and even shoveled snow ❄️ off my Matt. I found the groove and became a 9.5 handicap in less than a year…but anxiety took over when I started to play my first tournaments of my life. My work and family life was struggling and unfortunately my step-family after 10 years employed…honestly, I’m devastated. My mind and gusto for golf deflated (as it should be) but ironically I’m trying to get a second wind (3rd wind) and I’ve moved within a few miles of my family to figure out this transition and ironically I have a golf tournament on Monday and work the rest of the week. Bonding with people on the course (not in competition) is a great outlet. Your video at 12:20 minutes was therapeutic and inspiring!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Great content Matt. I’m fairly new to the channel. Really appreciate your honesty in showing the grind. If it was easy everybody would be on tour.
takes a lot to put yourself out there for Monday qualifiers. I did it when I was right out of college. I did the same thing you did. I am a 2 handicap, and one thing I noticed, was you had inconsistent shots...sometimes it would draw, sometimes it would stay straight. It is hard to go low when you do not have a consistent ball shape. Once you fix that under the conditions of a qualifying round, I feel you will erase those doubles and bogeys. You strike the ball well! Good luck and thank you for sharing your journey.
Matt, you got some major cojones for posting this video when you didn't have to, I wouldn't have. Mad props to you 👏👏👏. Love all your content.
