Awesome. I scored a free Optiplex 755 and will try to upgrade to the very same processor. My form factor has 4 RAM slots supporting up to 8GB so between that and a quad CPU, it should be a pretty decent system.
I have the XPS 420 from Dell and did a BSEL pin mod to take the Q6600 (2.4Ghz stock) to 3.0Ghz. I bumped it to 3.1Ghz with the SetFSB software OC. The Pin mod tricks the locked BIOS into going from 1066Mhz FSB stock to 1333Mhz. The 8GB RAM is DDR2 PC-6400 800Mz 6-6-6-18 and it's now running at 406Mhz (x2 double data rate). The DELL motherboard is rated for up to 1333Mhz..so no issues there. I noticed your HEATSINK is not nearly as large as the one on my XPS420. The plastic shroud, integrated fan and mounting system look the same, but the metallic sink is much smaller I would suggest you look into buying a used XPS 420 (2 copper loop) or XPS 720 (3 copper loop) heatsink on eBay. I actually picked up a XPS720 fan/shorud/heat sink combo for $7 delivered, recently. I did this to see if I can reduce my idle CPU temp by 3-4C back to stock like levels (42C). It's not imperative...just something I wanted to try. Apparently, the cooler on the 420 and the 720 fit the very same shroud, though I would have to drill three more holes in the top of my 420 shroud to accommodate the extra loop penetration on the 720 cooler. Luckily my 720 cooler came with its own shroud. It looks like the small unit on your machine uses the very same shroud (420 type) and proprietary hinged mounting system, too. Keep an eye on your temps with CoreTemp and/or Speecy. If it's above 50C at idle I'd try the above with the bigger DELL cooler. Else at least throw on a rear case fan for $5-$10. Lastly, your DELL will most likely recognize up to 8GB of RAM if you had a 64Bit WIndows OS and 4 ram slots on the motherboard. I did the Vista HP (32Bit) to 8.0/8.1 64Bit upgrade years ago for like $40. I did a clean install on a new SSD...wow...big improvement there!!!! Maybe you might be eligible to go to Windows 10 64 bit before the deadline (end June)? If you stay on a 32bit OS you will be limited to no more than ~3.6GB physical RAM recognition. If the old drivers are not supported by Win 10...you should be able to downgrade to 8.1 64 bit thereafter. Just an idea.
+JB6789 Wow that pin mod is impressive. I used to have a Q6600 actually, I gave it to my brother in law. Thanks for the info on the cooler too, my core temp has been around 50C idle and about 55C under load. The fan ramps up and keeps it under control, but it does seem a bit high at idle. After posting this video I actually swapped the stock 255watt powersupply for a Precision T3400's 525watt. Perfect fit, even the motherboard power cable length was just right. I was having some stability problems under high load on the 255watt, but the new PS took care of it no prob. Just wish it could take a dual slot GPU. Especially now that I have two 6-pin GPU power cables available!
JP Duffy Yes, those idle temps are on the high side. I'd definitely go for the DELL proprietary (used) cooler. (I'm over in Switzerland...so my extra ain't worth the transport). Else, just throw in a 92mm rear case fan...that should help some (though noisier). Just as an aside, if I had to buy a decent GPU today with a power requirement acceptable for the Dell, I'd go for a GTX 750Ti. I currently have a GTX550ti, which requires a lot more power and has about 1/2 the performance. Your new PS should be enough for that 750 ti...which is under $140 these days and nicely matched to the quad core Xeon. Of course, if you plan to move the GPU to a newer machine, and CPU bottle-necking isn't really an issue, something like the GTX 960 should also be possible. Just check dimensions on the Dimension. Good luck!
That was straight forward. I saw somewhere they had to change the microcode in the BIOS but yours seemed to work fine. Most importantly - what differences did you see in operation?
I'm upgrading my Optiplex 380 to Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83GHZ GHz 12M Cache 1333 MHz and 8Gbytes RAM which is the true max, not 4G as stated in this video. This chip is also available in 3.0MHz, but with overheating issues which is why I went with 2.83 instead.
The 360 I used in this video has a Intel G31 chipset that the internet tells me really is limited to 4GB. Your 380 likely has a better chipset. Good call on the Q9550, you won't have any weird glitches with that.
I have a Dell Optiplex 780 SFF that I upgraded to 12 g of RAM. I was hoping to upgrade to a quad core so I can go from Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro. Do you have any recommendation on what options for upgrading? I plan on taking the components apart so to get a good cleaning before any other upgrading. I hope to replace the 500 g hard drive to SSD too.
I bought the E5440 (2.83GHz) instead, which was way cheaper, and overclocked it to 3.4GHz stable at 1.12v. Temps have been surprisingly cool even with the stock Core 2 cooler. But I have a DIY rig, though, not a prebuilt PC.
ASUS P5K. Most P43/P45/G41/G31/G33 boards are compatible with the Xeons (google 'delidded LGA 771 to 775 compatibility' for a somewhat exhaustive list), but you definitely need a good overclocking motherboard to get high overclocks. The ASUS P5K is one of many such motherboards. These Harpertown Xeons are awesome overclockers. I've seen success stories from lots of people at various discussion forums. As far as I can tell, you're guaranteed to get at least 300MHz overclock on air cooler and stock voltage as long as you use an E- or L-series Xeon (and a motherboard that allows overclocking, of course).
I have three 775 motherboards but none is good, a Fatal1ty f-i90hd (updated the bios the other day with floppies), MSI Combo g41m-p33 (not possible to overclock) and an Asus P5KC with two busted CPU pins (can't use more than 1 slot of RAM otherwise it will crash). Would be great if it worked on the MSI Combo since I bought that board new and supports DDR3.
Sure, so in that era of CPU the only real difference in Xeon vs consumer was marketing. They have two pin pads on the CPUs swapped and the sticker reverses the connection. This video is really old though, so today if you wanted a retro PC of this vintage I'd recommend just finding a decent core2duo and going with that.
@JP Duffy. I have a G41 mobo with Q9500 Quad and GT 1030 GDDR5. My question is.. did you do a bios update to use the Xeon? This is my backup pc with Windows 7, using it for playing games that won't work in my Windows 10 pc.
I made sure to have the latest BIOS, but I didn't do a BIOS mod. Because of that I couldn't use Speedstep and had some stability issues. Later on I moved the CPU into a standard ATX board and did a BIOS mod which was more stable but still not 100%. You can read about it on delidded.com
@@JPDuffy thanks a lot for the quick reply. But this processor is probably not for me. Any upgrading that requires touching the bios makes me feel uneasy. The Xeon 5450 is stronger than the Q9500, but I'd have to pick stability over a little more power.
Hello,i just upgraded my optiplex 780 mini tower to a core 2 quad q9550 from a core 2 duo but the computer still says thati have a core 2 duo, help anyone?
Hello, Thanks for your video. I have 2 technical information to ask you please: With an optiplex MT 780 mini tower, To upgrade an e7500 core duo to a q8300 quad cores going to q9650 depending on the availability of available second-hand processors. Hard to find.... I have original 8gb ddr3 1066, i want to upgrade to 8gb or 16gb ddr3 1333 I will add an NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 basic 2gb ram integrated graphics card. There was no card. I am going to change 7200trs / min HDD disk against a 256 GB SSD to gain speed and lower consumption. With this configuration, is it necessary or not to change the heat sink placed on the processor? Is the original one sufficient? Will the original 305w power supply be sufficient? Thank you
What are you planning to use it for? I can't really recommend upgrading a C2D era machine anymore in 2021, it's much more cost effective to pick up a used 2nd ~ 4th gen i7 machine. I replaced the PC in this video with an i7-2700 Optiplex for $80. I lucked out and also found a GTX 960 also for $80. It runs great and is massively faster than any C2D (Xeons included).
I have a Dell Optiplex 760 DT and was looking to go for a Q9650 Until i came across this, will an X5460 work in my motherboard? (ofcourse with the pin adaptor sticker)
Just picked up a 755 optiplex from a buddy, pretty sure it has the same chipset, if I upgrade the pcu to this xeon, toss an extra 2 2gb ddr2s to make it 8 gigs ram which graphics card would u recommend, I know it has to be low prol and only 75 watts to work with what the pci slot power gives off
i have same optiplex and did this exact same mod. the bios does show the xeon. i do get a message saying processor is NOT supported. but it still boots into windows but windows still shows the old core 2 duo. when i run Intel processor ID it does show the xeon. I have the latest bios update on the motherboard. What am i missing? computer does run faster btw.
My guess would be that windows shows the cpu that was in the machine when windows was installed, and that the indication is not changed when the CPU is changed.
you have to turn "fast boot" off for Windows to do a full work-up with the new processor. It will install whatever it needs then you can do a reboot and turn "fast boot" back to on and things will wok and show correctly.
CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME!? I bought this processor for My optiplex 755 and everrything is good except When i boot IT up, My CPU fan goes to constant 100% speed and i get no signal on the monitor and everything is spinning at normal speed except the CPU fan, PLEASE HELP SOMEONE!!
Hi! I have dell optiplex 755 too. but optiplex 755 is not support xeons 54xx, because here is q45 cheapset . I bought xeon x3363 and it work fine.. so just buy xeon x3363 . it is the best choice for dell optiplex 755.. Write me if you have some questions; michaelphotolive@gmail.com
"You can't upgrade it", but then you just upgraded it. I'm confused. I have a Dell Optiplex 760. I don't know the exact terms for the different types of towers, but I have one that can either stand vertical or lay down(since that's best for the CD drive, that's how it is☺). I got it because it was the best I could afford from the options I had(referbished, with a goot rating). It came with Windows 10, and a 32bit cpu(page made it seem 64bit, but it is referbished), I have an unopened 64bit cpu in my desk. I'm gonna try to get two 4gb memory sticks when I can, but the hardest part(financially), is getting a good gaming gpu(I only have $36 free cash a month, took me three months saving up to get the Dell). The pc I had before, the tower was from 2005 I think(got down to only two usable USB slots, a dying audio port, and the CD drives were dying, no reading at all). The motherboard had been changed once sometime in 2009 I think. The memory and graphics card I have in the old won't fit in the Dell, so I'll need new ones. So it'll be a while before I can try to upgrade.
Hello guys, i have an optiplex 760 (mini tower) and i want to upgrade my pc with a q9550 quadcore . i know optiplex 760 has two motherboards, but i don't know which one is supports it. currently i have an e8400 3ghz, lc power 500w psu. my motherboard is OM858N, q45/q43, southbridge 82801jd (ich10d) please guys help me!
It works if done correctly. The dell's manual states a Xeon won't work in their motherboards, that's because they use a different chipset. With the 'sticker mod' it is compatible, but ofcourse they won't mention that in their manual.
Kent Stosem только что Dell Optiplex 780 support All 3xxx series Xeons. The 5xxx series is incompatible. search it in www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/3
hey, i just bought a dell vostro 220s and it comes with a e8400 and 4gb ram, do you know if i can upgrade the cpu to a 4 core? can you tell me some compatible cpus? thanks
Cesar Mendes You should be able to upgrade it to Core2quad q6600 . then just overclock it to 3.0 ghz and you will pretty much have the same performance as e5450 for around $10 to $20 .
I made sure to have the latest stock BIOS, but I didn't have to do a BIOS mod. I later moved the chip to an Asus board which did require a mod. The move let me have more ram and a full size GPU. In a generic case with an old GTX 580, it rocked some Doom 2016 and Ark quite well. Cooling was an issue with that setup as you can imagine though.
the best core 2 quad supported by the optiplex 745 is the q660 or its Xeon equivalent Xeon X3220 (no sticker required!!) the xeon is actualy cheaper sometimes and pulls off slightly better benchmarks
the q660 is more expensive because of its better overclocking ability but its only if you are using a non oem motherboard for an optiplex 745 since you cant keep overclock settings permanently i would stick with the xeon
no it wont, get an x3363 or a q9550, it is pretty much equivalent to the q9650 except it has 150mhz less, it is way better than the q6600 and wont break your bank like the q9650 will
So, you can only use 4gigs of ram only or can you bump it up to 16 gigs of ram by using two 8gig sticks? This is interesting a relative asked if they can upgrade their optiplex 745 but aonther has same optiplex as you.
with the 760, there are two types of motherboard, one that can only support core duo, and another which can support quad. google CPU-Z and download it, under the 'mainboard' you'll find a motherboard code. if u can let me know the code, i can tell you what it can support :)
The BIOS screen showed version A07 for his machine. On Dell's Support Site for this machine, you can download the A07 update if your machine has an older version.
@@JPDuffy thanks! So stock dell bios. There are two versions of the same e5450 chip a "slanq" and a "slmbb". It's basically version 1.0 or 2.0 with some added features. Any idea which you used?

pretty much all of the E series since they are only 80 watts, the X series is 130 watts which will not work in a Dell Optiplex 780.
none of the 5xxx series, so the e5450 wont work, i recommend the x3363

i have same optiplex and did this exact same mod. the bios does show the xeon. i do get a message saying processor is NOT supported. but it still boots into windows but windows still shows the old core 2 duo. when i run Intel processor ID it does show the xeon.
Can it be done to a hp 8500
but i have a x5450 is it the procesor?
its necessary to modify mobo bios or its just plug and play?
someone can pls tell me what cpu can i get for a Dell optiplex 760? what cpu's

Hi! I have dell optiplex 755 too. but optiplex 755 is not support xeons 54xx, because here is q45 cheapset . I bought xeon x3363 and it work fine.. so just buy xeon x3363 . it is the best choice for dell optiplex 755.. Write me if you have some questions; michaelphotolive@gmail.com
oh i know i should looked for that Before, ive looked on a x3363 but are there any better cpus in the x series that supports the optiplex 755? thanks.
Nice job.
I have a Dell optiplex 760 DT and i wanted to know if this quad core processor would work for me?
Yes it would. I use a Dell Optiplex to play my games for now, and it has a Xeon E5450 3GHz
would i need a sticker on the 760 dt?
yes
Is it suport x3040
Great video, did you do the codes also?
saludos amigo le puedo poner ese Xeon a una optiplex Gx620
Bro i have dell optilex 760 (E6750) pro And lga 755 socket can i upgrade it to c2q plss replyy? "
yes, i had that cpu, if it runs with that it will run with a c2q guaranteed, but maybe not all of em, the high end ones require a lot of power
Hi man, nice to watch your project! I have a question for you, can I put a x5460 on a Dell optiplex 755? (Tower version) thanks!
delidded has all the info and research, I basically just followed their guides.
you can, as long as the processor is lga 771 and u have a mod sticker
Can my 790 dt to i3 3rd gen
can I use it in Dell Optiplex 755 with 8gb ram and graphics card
YES but warning psu is 200-250w 300w max
He's meaning you can't upgrade the motherboard because its a btx style motherboard to a atx motherboard.
Hello guys, i have an optiplex 760 (mini tower) and i want to upgrade my pc with a q9550 quadcore . i know optiplex 760 has two motherboards, but i don't know which one is supports it.
currently i have an e8400 3ghz, lc power 500w psu. my motherboard is OM858N, q45/q43, southbridge 82801jd (ich10d)
please guys help me!
I upgrade mine recently, work fine on windows, but when i start any game, the bsod come through
I had to get a higher wattage PSU for this machine to be stable. Even then it wasn't perfect.
Good point, i'll try again with another psu Thanks
How high?
works in 780 sff?
Does Dell Optiplex 755 support Xeon X5450...please fast reply
Dell Optiplex 780 support All 3xxx series Xeons. The 5xxx series is incompatible. search it in www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/3
I have a optiplex 780 Sff can I upgrade to any core 2 quad please let me know
Callum Faulds thank you btw which one is the best
Um, can I put a Xeon X5460 in an OptiPlex 745?
i just asked a seller and he told me that this cpu cannot work in all dells motherboard shamed that i cant put this powerful cpu in my computer..
It works if done correctly. The dell's manual states a Xeon won't work in their motherboards, that's because they use a different chipset. With the 'sticker mod' it is compatible, but ofcourse they won't mention that in their manual.

Hey..i have a P5G41C-M LX motherboard and im planning to get this cpu is the microcode thing necessary to get this processor working with the board?
is what question?
Core 2 quad fitting optiplex 380?
TrAxOn HaXx Yes all Core 2 Quads should work on the 380. I should know I have the 380 machine
Yes all Socket 775 ones.
Can I upgrade my Optiplex 780's CPU which is core 2 duo 3.0 GHZ to Xeon E5450?
Not according to this: www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/3/#dell
hey, i just bought a dell vostro 220s and it comes with a e8400 and 4gb ram, do you know if i can upgrade the cpu to a 4 core? can you tell me some compatible cpus? thanks
Cesar Mendes You should be able to upgrade it to Core2quad q6600 . then just overclock it to 3.0 ghz and you will pretty much have the same performance as e5450 for around $10 to $20 .
Doesn’t the sticker melt?
what kind of motherboard does a Xeon E5450 need?
JP Duffy, how are you? This procedure that you performed on the desktop dell did not need to update the bios?
I made sure to have the latest stock BIOS, but I didn't have to do a BIOS mod. I later moved the chip to an Asus board which did require a mod. The move let me have more ram and a full size GPU. In a generic case with an old GTX 580, it rocked some Doom 2016 and Ark quite well. Cooling was an issue with that setup as you can imagine though.
oh you have a 360 is it the noscope version ?
I have an Optiplex 780 DT can I put a xeon E5450 in it?

Will this work on Optiplex 760? (Tower)
Awesome!
WHY IS A INTEL XEON SO EXPENSIVE IN CANADA!!!
Look on aliexpress
Awesome, I'm thinking about doing the same thing to my optiplex 360. How's the performance been since upgrading?
BiosMOD here for 360.

:D
can i put a core 2 quad in a optiplex 745
the best core 2 quad supported by the optiplex 745 is the q660 or its Xeon equivalent Xeon X3220 (no sticker required!!)
the xeon is actualy cheaper sometimes and pulls off slightly better benchmarks
the q660 is more expensive because of its better overclocking ability
but its only if you are using a non oem motherboard
for an optiplex 745 since you cant keep overclock settings permanently i would stick with the xeon
thank you
and trust me a Xeon X3220 will surpass your expectations
no it wont, get an x3363 or a q9550, it is pretty much equivalent to the q9650 except it has 150mhz less, it is way better than the q6600 and wont break your bank like the q9650 will
So, you can only use 4gigs of ram only or can you bump it up to 16 gigs of ram by using two 8gig sticks?
This is interesting a relative asked if they can upgrade their optiplex 745 but aonther has same optiplex as you.
On the 360 4gb was the max "supported" ram. Probably more would work. DDR2 can be a bit expensive to find in higher capacities though.
is optiplex 755 compitable with this cpu????
I'm sure it is, but you might need to cut little notches in the sides to get it to fit, just like he did. I'm putting the Q9650 in my Optiplex 755.
Will this cpu work on a sff optiplex 580?
if i have an optiplex 760, can i install a core 2 quad or a Xeon E5450?
with the 760, there are two types of motherboard, one that can only support core duo, and another which can support quad. google CPU-Z and download it, under the 'mainboard' you'll find a motherboard code. if u can let me know the code, i can tell you what it can support :)
Model: 0D517D
Chipset: Q45/Q43
thank you
Unfortunately you can only support max of core 2 duo. The best processor you can have in your motherboard is a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3ghz.
that's the one i have, thank's for the info man!
I have a optiplex 760 sff with 0m863n board, can i put the modded xeon E5450 on it?
doesn't this need a bios flash to work?
Not if the core2quad equivalent is supported. They share identical microcode.
The BIOS screen showed version A07 for his machine. On Dell's Support Site for this machine, you can download the A07 update if your machine has an older version.
Bro dell 780 support i3?
Hi what version of bios are you running? If it's stock which version or revision A01 A02 etc?
No idea, this was a long time ago. I'm pretty sure I updated to the latest from Dell's website though.
@@JPDuffy thanks! So stock dell bios. There are two versions of the same e5450 chip a "slanq" and a "slmbb". It's basically version 1.0 or 2.0 with some added features. Any idea which you used?
@@luckyu123 I'm pretty sure I had a slanq. I checked my eBay history, but it only went back to 2017. :(
@@JPDuffy thank you sir that's what I am going with
@Cyclonex1CA ca got a pre modified slanq chip from china/ebay this week. No stickers/jumpers or cutting or motherboard. Will install soon
Hi man!
Do you using Mod Bios?
What is processor degree on load?
What is you Cpu Cooler?
No BIOS mod, and stock cooler. Never checked the temps, but those dell coolers are beasts, no worries there.
I use a file to notch the CPU instead of the motherboard
You can get a pre-modded xeon for the same price on ali-express
I tried ordering something there once and they wanted a photocopy of my driver's license. Yeah, that's a no from me dawg.
@@JPDuffy thats sketchy af i ordered one they just wanted my shipping address
Is the sticker mandatory?
does it add virtualization technology?
It did not add it for me, and the option appears to still be disabled.
@@KingCornWallis i have virtualisation weird?
could you do this with a optiplex 755?
yes
No. Everyone says the 5xxx series 771 Xeons won't work on the 755. However the 3xxx 775 Xeons look like they should work.
will optiplex 755 with xeon l5408 or 5xxx will work ? its q35
755 will work only with x3363, not the x5xxx series
can this be done with the dell optiplex 755?
Not.

But ask here (inside Bios-MOD for standar MoBos)
