    I remember this day! I was stationed there as a young SP. I heard this loud roar that was different than the Lancers that were there at the time. I looked out my barracks to see that awesome shape soaring around. I said out loud to myself "Oooh that's a Russian beauty" and I wasn't quite sure why it was there. Now tonight I found this video, which brings all those memories back.

    Yeah, after they reached Langley, Virginia, there was held a training session over the Atlantic Ocean, approx. 200 km away from the coast. The training session, "mock dogfight”, included at least two fights between Su 27 and F15 as these jet fighters's characteristics are very similar and both American and Russian aces desired to test the planes of their potential opponents. All fights were won by Su 27 pilots. Ten years later, in 2002, one of the 94FS pilots, Tom Murphy, tried to annul the results of those mock dogfights stating that the fights were not held according to the fighter community rules and making up various reasons to explain the defeat of F15s.
    On their way back home Russian pilots almost lost both jet fighters as the engines on both aircrafts suddenly stopped working. The reason why the engines stalled was the fuel quality. Russian Su 27s could not work properly as American operating personnel filled both Su 27s with unsuitable fuel, the density of which was much thinner than needed. On their way to the US border Su 27 pilots were told by American colleagues to fly over a thunderstorm. Having reached the altitude of 13 km both Su 27s started to fall down. The Russian pilots while preparing to eject asked American pilots accompanying Su 27s to the border to stay on the spot so that they could inform the rescue team about the location of the disaster that could've occured. The crew of IL 76, which is also shown in the video, was unaware of the Su 27s' situation as IL 76 was going around the thunderstorm and was a long distance from the two Russian jet fighters. So, US F15 pilots were the only ones who could help. American aces just giggled in response and flew away keeping absolute silence. None of the pilots or the operating staff was sustained to any penalties later even though the accident was reported to their command. Luckily at the alt. 2-3 km Su 27s' engines revived.

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So the Il-76 engines were fine, but the Su-27 engines weren’t? Soviet fighters were designed to use NATO refueling receptacles and fuel after occupying NATO air bases. Russian engines tend to burn jet fuel at higher temperatures, which isn’t good for your pressure ratio or engine life. What do you think the odds are that these pilots pushed their motors to the limits, uncaging the “emergency power" excess thrust option for the Saturn Al-31 motors during those flights off the coast of Langley AFB?
      Also, how do you propose that the F-15s would help them in this alleged incident of them losing altitude on their return trip? What “penalties” would you suggest the USAF should inflict on its pilots for failures with Russian engines? That’s the thing I find interesting about this line of thinking, that Russia thinks people owe it something, even to the extent that other people should pay or be punished for Russia’s incompetence and failures. This is the thought process of a retard or child.

    It must be taken into account that, well before the end of the cold war, the Soviet designers, scientists and engineers has pretty much caught up to world standards in all of the relevant fields of aerospace matters and military and civilian aviation. It took a while for their designs to catch up to the current state-of-the-art, but catch up they did. And, having done so, it was not terribly difficult to forge ahead on their own. They had been pushing the state-of-the-art in aviation since the beginning anyway. The Mig 29 and the SU 27 represent a Soviet design solution to the common fighter problem. Personally, I think their machines are breath taking.

      d ellingson sure, our “Meals ready to eat” I remember one time we stayed the night with “3 para” British paratroopers. We got along because we too were Airborne. They loved our MRe’s and hated their own. They couldn’t believe how much food we had with us and the endless amount of Rations we had like redbulls, Starbucks shots, chips, we would bring them magazines, new porn lol. They also couldn’t believe how much AirPower we had, they could always depend on American AirPower to come help them. Canada and Britain have helicopters and jets too but it’s not even comparable to the US. Also our vehicles and equipment is top notch and new. They liked our weapons better as well especially the main battle rifle out M-4 they had a Bullpup rifle and they hated it. We had Sat phones we let them use to call home too The biggest thing to me tho was that they’re country wouldn’t send them Anti IED equipment especially the vehicles needed to find bombs buried in the road. This hurt morale amongst the Canadian and British troops and they made numerous attempts to showcase our equipment for finding and defeating IED’s like our electronic warfare stuff or the radars we had. They were always extremely grateful and happy to give Americans with them because we just bring so much to the table as far as technology and equipment.

      Thanks Gabriel, as a citizen would never know this, thats A LOT of stuff you mentioned. Sounds like multi branch coordination was worked on from the first gulf war to the 2nd , i'm sure technology had a part to play also in that. Also to improve disorientation at night moving with fast deadly equipment. You know when politics and using the military as police or meals on wheels must be hard on guys I understand some are trained for that. The thought of our forces combined and focused with the kill people and break things battle plan is hard to wrap your head around its power. Glad you guys and our allies got along and worked so good together. Its unfortunate when you have to go to war, but at least you cam play to win. Thank you Gab for serving our country. D. Ellingson.

    Aren't the F-15 vs Su-27 arguments getting a bit tired ? If the F-15 was significantly better than the Su-27, and upgraded F-15s better than the Su-30/35 the F-22 wouldn't exist would it ? Ignorance and/or arrogance usually results in a painful and expensive lesson in combat. It doesn't really matter if 90 F-15s can defeat 100 Su-27s, that's an exchange rate that will be unacceptable to both users. It's the same with current arguments regarding the F-35. "We can see them but they can't see us" and "We're not interested in a fair fight" were comments you would hear in 2001, but totally disregard developments since then. Going up against a fighter like T-50 that has a bigger radar, much more agile airframe, longer-ranging radar/infra-red /passive anti-radar missiles, passive infra-red sensors, stealthy airframe probably as good as F-35, integrated avionics and can out-turn, out-accelerate, out-climb, out-detect and out-shoot you can't just be disregarded

      F-15s are still being built, F-22 are not. Su-30 are still being built even though Su-57 is now ready. Many of those recent upgrades are being applied to new versions of these older designs, not just the stealth aircraft.

    Знали бы американцы что проиграли все воздушные бои в тот визит русских на авиабазу Лендли, после полётов они сказали прессе "всё прошло отлично, выступили примерно на равных" и как потом бросили русских когда у них заглохли двигатели на обоих самолётах из-за некачественного топлива и они просили сообщить спасателям где их искать если им придётся катапультироваться, а американцы сделали вид что не слышат их и улетели. Это позор какой то....
