I saw Del in the 80's at a venue on a lake in Georgia. I was visiting from L.I. NY, with my oldest brother and his wife. He did all of his hits, and also his version of "Black is Black" by Los Bravos. Great show! When we were leaving the concert, this car pulls up along side of my brothers car. The guy in the back seat, rolls down his window and asks me if he could cut in front of us so he can get to the airport. I said "Yes", but you have to shake my hand. I met the Great Del Shannon!

That song was "From Me To You" and Del Shannon was the 1st American to record a song by the Beatles. On a tour to England he appeared on the same bill with the Beatles and other artists. Del heard the song and told John Lennon he was going to record the song. Of course the Beatles were going to appear next with their performance. John had told Del not to record it because that was their song. But after that performance the Beatles agreed to let Del Shannon record the song. The reason is because they had been unsuccessful in being able to perform and tour in America. The Beatles wanted for people in America to hear their material. Del's version of the song outsold the original because the Beatles had released it before and the song flopped. The reason was because at that time people here in America people didn't know who the Beatles were since they hadn't yet appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. When the Beatles released it again in 1964 then the song became a major hit for them. Check out Del Shannon's version it's a little similar but his style and Beatles style of music differ. But they're both great songs.

It also happen to be my birthday. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Del (Charles Westover) briefly, of all places, but in the washroom. Recently, I went back to the building to see what was there after all these years and I was surprised to see that the stage where he performed was still there. I took a picture of the stage and the area and memories of Del came back after 27 years. RIP Del Shannon

Im a member of the same extended family and about the same age as he is in this video, also a singer, some time actor/writer, etc. We had some sudden deaths in the family this year some just before his birthday so Im working through some stuff and finding out my family didnt tell me a lot of things they should have. Big surprise in the screwed up dysfunctional family from hell. Uncle Del, though I didnt really know him, always seems to love the same songs I do. Long before I was told we were related I loved everything I saw of his and it always touched a note deep down, especially runaway and searching. For the same reason Ive found out that he wrote them, same screwed up family, same desire to get away and find something better. I am thankful for all of you who love his stuff as I do, I feel we all share some of the same feelings and passions. Bless you all and may 2021 treat everyone better.

Del really rocked this song. His voice was so strong. I can't imagine him being depressed--his career was getting ready to take of again with new songs and working with Tom Petty. Although a few months later he seemed depressed and ill at his final concert. His is such a sad story for an amazing talent.

I have been thinking and thinking why this man was in his own league-First- he is extraordinarily handsome - a very large head that looks like it was chiseled out of Granite. Elvis was perfect, Shannon is like his music , his face is at it's extreme before he would look WEIRD. To his music - When one thinks he will slow down then BAM he floors it again always and I mean always driving his song with his unique bag of tricks that no one else has ever had. A voice that one cannot even guess if he will upshift or down, but again he drives his songs and covers on the very very edge before it would become a disaster. Dell is SUPRISING every moment ! He takes on the Beatles and Roy Orbison KNOWING, that he will do something great with them. So he has tremendous self confidence in his talents and is fearless on stage, all the while keeping humble when those of us with ears knows he was so special!! . Finally he has exquisite taste in music, Listen to his productions- Brian Hyland with GYPSY WOMAN and wow it is sweet!! Then of course- Have you ever heard a Del Shannon where you disliked the melody?? Dell Shannon, if he had not use alcohol as his 'elixir' could have kept going. My last observation- Maybe a typo- But I saw his height listed at 5 feet. Ladies and gents- If he was that short , then he suffered greatly , because to be a star at 5 feet is almost impossible. There would have never been a 5 foot superstar known as Elvis Presley. , That is very very short for a man, and rare is the man that would not deplore this one aspect of himself. .

He was amazing and a lot better singer than most these days who need backup studio equipment to sound halfway good.

Haven't watched this in awhile and I'm still amazed at how clear Del's voice is and so strong too. So sad about him. What a wonderful talent he was.
