I have a Suunto MC 2 ( degrees) a Silva Ranger and a Cammenga Lensatic. Carry a protractor with my map in my pack. I always look at the details before I buy. Problem with this is people just getting into land Navigation will not have a clue what their purchasing. Refined my land navigation skills in the Marine Corps almost 40 years ago. Stay Stoked!
lot of sellers just dont give you a chance to see the detail, poor descriptions, poor pics. Easy to forget that some might not be the normal standard you are looking for. made that mistake a few times.
Hello, What's the best of the three ?
@@rpor984 I would go with a Suunto MC 2 ( with the 360 degrees) You don’t have to carry a protractor and can set the magnetic declination for your area. A Cammenga can be more accurate but you have to carry a protractor to use it with a map.
@@michaelrichards5000 Thank you. I got the Expedition S from Silva years ago and wondered if switching to Suunto is worth it. Seems to me they do the same thing and are pretty much similar. Except Suunto claims the compass works at every altitude. I contacted Silva and actually don't know if theirs works at very high altitude.
Good ol military land nav
The instant you brought both compasses out, I saw where you were going with it. I've been using this exact compass for a few years, chiefly because it's light weight and multipurpose. Right away, the big difference at first glance is one has a white bezel ring, the other black. The one you want has the white ring. Personally, I've been using the one made for USGS UTM scales, for the northern hemisphere. It has a white bezel ring with 360 degrees. I don't use it very often, but I always have it on me attached to a lanyard. Saved my bacon at least once that I can recall.
good stuff!
Good stuff man. I'm totally the hardass military dude that only uses the lensatic compass.
I have a commenga lensatic and a Silva explorer something, but I wanted an mc2 because I heard that's a good one and my Silva doesn't have a mirror and I heard so much about having a mirror so I wanted one... I just checked my Amazon cart and the mc2 I have in it is the quadrant one. So thanks for the lesson and for saving me $70.
My Bruton compass I bought at the ft.sill PX back in 1982 is still accurate and good to go.
Damn. This just made me get my compass out and check
same - I had made that error but returned for the right one.
Yep same here. Mine is right. 0 to 360. Every line is two degrees. God bless . From Glenn CATT. In Massachusetts.
I double checked mine as well luckily I got the 0-360 model😅
Good info. I have an MC2, not totally impressed with the quality, but works well for me.
Went thru many Navigational courses in the Army, back in the 70s Own a knock off Military lensatic compass, not quite as durable as Standard issued. But with a little TLC its works, back in 2007 at Fort Laurerdale, done some work for a retired 2 star General,
Brad Smith.. turns out he was in charge of mapping all of Canda, and USA of up dateing all topography maps...
Had some great dinners together, he laught when i mention about a KRP (Known Reference Point) using a M2 Aiming Circle...Shoot your Azimuth at 1000 meters, need to be visibly by night and day, and stationary.
Then he gave me a run down of his dept.i was blown away..
He said "the Army lets you play with the tinker toys"😂
awesome stuff!
Good to know. Details are important, even when you’re buying “your” brand.
I made that exact mistake and didn't realize it until I was on the land nav course.
I wish Sunnto would bring back the RA-69 model.
Chunky bezel to grip with gloves on. The best bit was the way the needle settled so quickly.
A great compass.
PS for your information. I have a Silva compass graduated in Swedish degrees 400° to the circle, to add to the confusion.
PPS Additionally, I have a russian army compass in Russian Mils, which are different to NATO Mils.
Take care out there folk, Happy Trails !
400 degrees is called Gon and is used in Geodetic measurement.
Just look at mine i got the right one. It go 0to365 degrees. Each line on my compass is 2 degrees. So thanks for the heads up . Good video. God bless. From Glenn CATT. In Massachusetts.
I made that error but returned it for the 360 one.. but also have some of those $10 ones
My go to is always a military lensatic compass
Spot on
I personally think the military lensatic compass is the best design there is. I've used many different compasses in my years, and my go to is the lensatic as well.
@@markgoulette5056 I "grew up" using a lensatic compass in the Army, but these days it's too much weight for the worth, before mentioning that you need to carry a separate protractor. The MC2 has it all in one, and it's more accurate than 99% of map readers out there.
So, I am not sure if this is by accident, by familiarity, or done on purpose, but your little setup there reminds me of my old days in our squad room :). Even the echo, lol.
Right on!
@@STOKERMATIC I can now smell that room. CLP, stale cigarettes, and coffee lol
My Suunto is the Global version. The problem it has, and I've heard this from others, is the needle sticks sometimes when trying to get an accurate azimuth .
My needle sticks and unreliable to use.
Isn't there also a Northern\ Southern hemisphere bias on the G model you need to adjust for the needle balance?
I've dealt with The Compass Store in Winder Georgia and they are a good source. Just thought I would pass along the info. Great info as usual Stoker.
Thanks for sharing!
N 27 W = N -27 N 27 E = N 27 Just another way of reading a bearing on a quad compass. And with a quad, if your heading has been toward the east that bearing would be E 63 N instead of N 27 E. All the more reason not to use one for general navigation.
Transits and pocket transits have east and west swapped so they read right when viewed in a mirror, which is how you're supposed to read them. Keep your eyes on what you're sighting, kinda like aiming a firearm, glance in the mirror to get the bearing.
And you're right, transits and quads are specialized and not for general use.
I see both compasses you're showing have an inclinometer too. Those are handy like when you're budgeting energy, carrying out an injured person. You really don't want to gain or lose elevation.
Yes sir. I unfortunately years ago bought the quadratic. Ont can’t for example turn to 125 degrees. Instead you have to figure in this instance from 90 and starting over it would be 90 + 35 degrees. Sounds simple but in the field it’s hard. Mistakes happen.
I always imagine what this stuff will be like to use when you're in the wet cold with numb fingers,, prob with gloves, so tired you can just cope, darkening light when you can just see. I have been in bad situations where physically i was fine and didn't worry, but even good situations where you're body is in trouble is what you need to deal with.
You're quickly becoming my go to guy for a ton of stuff. I learn fromm you every time i watch you. Thank you for your knowledge sharing.
BTW USMC 93-97.
Thanks again. Cheers!
Semper Fi!
I have a cammenga and a suunto, have you ever experienced the needle on the suunto, ticking during really cold weather?
Well, how many variations are there for the MC 2 ? And which one(s) exactly should people avoid buying ?
They have one that is USGS. What is that. At least I know ow the difference between northern and southern hemisphere.
Great video, Top! I have both in my kit at all times. Two is one, one is none!
Just checked my recent MC 2 purchase. All good. Appreciate the heads up though.
Did not know this, i scrambled to look at my Suunto! No, it's a regular A10. The British military use compasses with Mils on, used to know how to use them a long time ago, we even learned in school, the army used to donate compasses to the school and Orienteering was done in physical education classes, got to start early when there's millions of Commies just the other side of West Germany!!! Our local regiments were BAOR too.
The British prismatic compasses were also made to order in Warsaw Pact spec 6000 mils instead of NATO 6400 mils which can be extra confusing.
Good video!! I have heard of this problem a few months ago, so I haven't purchased one and beside don't have the funds for it anyways right now lol!! But I have probably about ten others and most of them are cheap Chinee ones. I had a Brunton baseplate one and a couple of basic Silva baseplates but all of them developed huge bubbles in them. Seems every baseplate one I get does that, any suggestions on that problem would be helpful.
Cammenga's aren't filled - a little heavier, but heavy duty.
There used to be induction damped (instead of fluid damped) base plate compasses. Maybe someone still makes them. The old Silva aluminum bezel ones were like that.
I like watching your videos on things like this I trust your opinion I live in Oregon I've been watching your videos for about a year now when I found you I've been watching your Land Navigation videos from past and I was thinking of getting one of these Santo compasses now you've made me rethink my decision before I buy it so now I know what you're probably going to say what do you suggest for a compass for me to get I want to make sure I get the right Compass the first time
yea, that's why we use the Suunto that runs from 0 to 360 degrees. They're excellent compasses
I still have a Cammenga in a pouch attached to my ALICE gear that I have had for 40 years. It's pretty beat up and should be replaced. Maybe one of these days.
I have made many compass purchase mistakes in the past. They were all called purchasing something other than a Cammenga Lensatic Tritium Compass direct from Cammenga. The Cammenga Lensatic is the best compass I have ever owned and the only compass I want in my kit in the Canadian North.
A lot of the vintage Brunton pocket transit type compasses are quadrantal bearing system (Reduced Bearing) too. I've known people who did the same thing buying them by accident.
We only use quad compasses while land surveying and it definitely confuses anyone who buys one and doesn't specifically need one.
I was in a hardcore compass search yesterday. I think ive settled on the "silva ranger s" 20 bucks cheaper than the suunto mc2 and the only thing its missing is the magnifying glass. Which is fine cuz im only gonna use it for scouting new hunting areas. Only concern i have is the noise when opening and closing. Im a total newbie when it comes to nice compasses, so i hope its a good one thatll last for years in the field
I’m sure it’ll do you well!
I think I've been taking the magnifying glass for granted on these compasses. Using one yesterday where the mag area was smaller than on some other compasses. It makes the lens mound rounder and attract more reflection making reading through it a lot harder. It also means the focal distance range is much narrower so magnifying something not exactly flat with feet of the compass is not so good.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Man I really appreciate the content on land nav that you have posted. It's the little things that make all the difference....when those little things are actually pretty damn critical when you are learning from scratch. At almost 51 years old who says ya can't teach an old dog new tricks!
I bought that same compass in 07 ago to compare it to the one I got in the Navy, I gave it away and haven't seen that dude since.
Can a compass be stored long term near a carbine, or in proximity to steel? I have not tested it yet if it affects the compass over time.
I may email for assistance. Planning on purchasing another global compass. Sunto mc2-g. But - your video on commanga nearly had me sold. The commanga is top dollar. I read reviews that left some doubt about how well the build quality is, specifically regarding the clicks as you turn not being completely etched or built to stand the test of time.
Funny that I found your video. Was just looking to get a compass and came across rave reviews for MC2. Like you said, when you go to order there are all kinds of types listed. So which one do you buy?
1, USGS UTM Scales,
2. Metric Scales with inch ruler
3. Metric UTM scales and inch ruler
4. Imperial scales
5. Northern Hemisphere or Global?
Back in the day I had a Silva, but in 1985 my loader dropped it while on the move, and no it did not survive being run over by my wing man's M1 tank. I see that Silva's are from China now.
Where is a good source /s for the Cammenga H3 tritium lensatic compass? Optics Planet or Cabela's?
In the description is a link.
Ive got a Silva that's similar to these two you showed and Im pretty sure its G to G- good info for people to know-
I am on the Suunto website right now. The MC-2 comes with either Metric UTM scales or USGS UTM scales. Is the USGS UTM scales reading in degrees.
I knew about the grid one but not the quadrant. I have two mc2. Have to go check one.
Thanks for the knowledge on that subject.
Yep! Years ago I made the mistake of buying that compass. I replaced it with one with 360° units on the bezel. The other is now collecting dust in my gear bin.
I mean it all boils down to what you're using it for. For land nav using military topographical maps with 8 digit grids, ill use a lensatic compass with a protractor. For orienteering baseplate compass
You can still order them GTA 5 protractor.
Agree that is a marketing mistake not to name them differently and not helpful to their own prospective customers. Hopefully should be able to return it if realise early enough.
I've got a nice folding sighting compass from Amazon marketed by KUIDAMOS but it has no brand on it all. Still trying it out, It only cost about $8.40 so worth a punt. Completely clear acrylic except for brass hinge pin. So far i am impressed as all the markings, dial readout and text on it is very readable without glasses. No magnifying glass though ( except through the sighting lens). Rotating bezel has smooth rotate but feels a tad vertically loose due to not having spring retainer clips like silva etc. Not seen it sold elsewhere by anyone else. Presume its Chinese made but does not even say place of manufacture on it, their branding ethos is completely different from us.
Great video brother
Pardon another comment? BUT....If You have a GRID DOWN situation, will any kind of GPS work??
Depends on why it’s down TBH. If satellites are working, and your device isn’t fried then yes, it’ll work.
@@STOKERMATIC Good info to know! BE SAFE / WELL & BLESSED BE!
Muchly Informative Info brudder!
I understand your position. I picked up a quadrant compass by mistake. It’s water under the bridge.
Thank You For Sharing This Information !! A Compass Should Have A 360 Degree Bezel, No Exceptions !
I have many compass' some for different things. Every pack has at least one. I'll check the ones that matter
Had to double check my suunto
Thank God I got the right one lol
I bought it direct from them, no way to screw it up
Whew I was worried there for a minute my favorite compass Suunto 2 .
Yeah mine too. Use it all the time for fun out hunting. I saw this video and was like “wait what?” It would take a complete idiot to order a quad compass. If you don’t know what compass to order stick with your GPS and IPhone.
Hello this is a good compass with a specialized purpose helpful in giving quick bearings
Thanks for this! K.I.S.S. It's good to have a little knowledge of the many different compasses. Yet in a high stress situation or for everyday use the 360 is most intuitive for most people world wide. For my use I only need general direction but enjoy reading maps in a nerdy kind of way.
Guilty. My first MC2 bought on amazon was the wrong one and I had to return it. Great advice!
Went out to do some stuff with a group in a sandy environment now it’s gritty and hard to turn
I got a Suunto to replace a Silva Ranger that replaced a knockoff military two-three years ago. The knockoff had worked great playing army while the Ranger didn’t get used a lot but developed bubbles. Haven’t really used the new one much. For a while everyone was saying Suunto was the new go-to in the absence of a GPS. Probably should just break down and get a new military lensetic…
Mills are for throwing rocks (artillery), Degrees are for Land Nav (foot travel).
It would be helpful if you included links to the good ones and budget options you recommend.
The Suunto MC2 I have has worked it in degrees
Never really realised until recently you can get compasses in mils. I have the understanding these are for military use and some compasses do mils and degrees on the same dial. Trying to think why you would need mils and I reckon it's to call in changes to military targeting that uses equipment that probably does work in mils due to range distances involved. So prob not needed by civilians at all. Perhaps military audience can add.
I found a Suunto compass at work one day it was also a The North Face branded one 👍
Stoke makes a good point
Problem is that here in the UK, be it Amazon or even Suunto's website, there is no full accurate description of which model is what. I want a MC-2 Global in degrees 0-360 with 0:25000 and 0:50000 scales in metric, and can't find the bloody information. Which exact model number is that!!! On suunto's website, pictures don't correspond to the actual model.
Hi
I want some USGS maps of my area, free if possible, but when I go to the usgs site, I can't download them
I remember a video you explained where to do this, but i can't find it.
Help!
Tnx.
P.S.
I'd also like a map from the Roosevelt Roads base in Puerto Rico.
I live minutes from it so before going in there to explore what they left behind and the structures I need a detailed map.
Lmk
Hope this helps!

Their site can be frustrating.
Tnx
All anyone has to do when looking at suuntos make sure it is degrees not mils or quadrant
I made this mistake. Knew nothing. Couldn’t find and descent info and bought the wrong one. Great video and hope people pay attention. Still know nothing. Ha.
I had to pause the video and check my Silva compass and I'll be damned if it ain't just like you just told us about. I'm glad I have my military cammenga compass and it will be my only navigation compass, if it's good enough for the military then it's good enough for me.
Great video
Great point.
Stoker can you do a video on thumb compasses? Genuinely curious if they facilitate quicker land navigating over gnarly distances
Wouldn’t recommend buying one TBH.
Sounds like wind trajectory or something. Maybe it's used by sailors?
I had to go through my gear to verify that I have the Suunto MC2 in degrees. And I do…. Thank god…. I have a cammenga 3H lensatic in my main gear with maps and protractors and the Suunto in all my hunting packs, waterfowl, deer & upland.
You’re confusing me, I don’t know what you are saying, so which compass should I buy ??
So, f/ degrees I want to get metric. What is Metric "UTM" ? I definently get a northern hemisphere , ?? Correct ? Or do I get USGS "UTM" ??? I'm still confused. I do want to use with maps. ...Alan in Texas 🇨🇱

Is the Ranger Silva compass good?
I have the Ranger and the wrong mc2 in my Amazon cart... I switched the mc2 for the correct one, but I'd like to know the answer to your question as well so I'm gonna leave this comment to follow the thread for the answer.
it is good to go! may develop a bubble as many baseplates will, but it'll still work.
@@STOKERMATIC awesome, thanks! I got one more question, but I'll ask in main comments for others to see it easier. On storage near metal.
Depends on when and where they are made. You want findland made and the baseplate needs a bluish grey tint to them.
The recent silva is better, but they had made a lot of junk. If I was ordering a silva in the u.s. I would be ordering from silvacanada.. Johnson u.s.a stole Silva patent when it lapsed and those were made in China. Those were clear baseplate and bubbled with in 1 year. My Suunto mc2 global needle 0-360 is still good after 5to 6 years. My cammenga died after 2 years
good word
appreciate that amigo!
So which exactly not to buy ….. ?
Brother Stoke, which you prefer, im uneducated, i prefer the best on the market, thank Stoker 👍☕️☕️✌️
Cammenga all the way.

7:39 I can tell this was an emotional difficult video for Stoker to make.
I thought you was going to say it was Southern Hemisphere.
The Cammenga D3 is an expensive but awesome base plate or protractor compass as they call it.
I Enjoy the Heck out of My Suunto MC-2 Global,
The Metal N/S w/ the Clinometer, 1:24 scale, Magnifying glass, Glow in the Dark Bezel / N needle, Standard scale , NOT Metric/yrds Only Inches & Miles here bud and the signal mirror. Cant go wrong Man, Too many Lifesavong features NOT TO.
If you spend the Dough and know how to work a 🗺️ Map and 🧭 Compass Correctly, My Baseplate $70 Mc2 Global was an easy transition from being Taught on a Commenga Lensatic back in the hayday.
G' Day Man🇺🇲🤘🏼☘️
Lol, but the modern lensatic has dropped all the cardinal direction markers and only works by counting clicks from north. And the precision scale when using the lens is in mills.
Those numbers are only there for protractor users, baseplate compasses don't need them by design
It has degrees - only need to click when using under limited visibility.
It is a quadrant compass for geological purposes.
Dude slow down- As soon As I saw that I saw that it's a Radian Compass- They are great if you are a geologist- Brunton Transit Compasses are traditionally in Radians- But Yes- Suunto does make the MC2 in Radians, Mils and Degrees and they are tough to determine which one is which- Most stores (brick and morter) in North America only sell the Degree format
Dude.....there is nothing wrong with this Compas. There are MANY types depending on what you do.
Always stick to the K.I.S.S system and everything will go much smoother.
Great vid and thank you...saved my bacon with a purchase this morning...now Ive got the correct type for my purposes coming in. The devil is in the details!
2 cammengas and 2 suunto mc-2g in degrees.
I wont buy Suunto ever again. After years of always only buying Suunto and found the last two purchases had quality issues - they were supplied dry! Suunto demanded I sign an agreement to pay them to replace the defective items. Rubbish customer service and appalling quality control. Buyer beware.
thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I made that mistake and bought that POS. It is very confusing and I hate it!
Sell or give it to your local land surveyor.
Mills are used for freaking Gunners dealing with miles and miles landing an air burst shell at 2753 feet. Mils. This is weird on a compass.
