Mike is a gem. Regardless, they lost that 2011 cup, so many great memories and loving hearing him talk hockey.

Such a shame he hasn't gotten back behind the front office. He deserves another shot at it.

He does but being a player agent at one time keeps him out of "the club" for the most part. Francesco gave him the spot but the rest of the league wont. Too bad. Looking back his tenure here was very solid and he did a lot of things that were cutting edge for players that are now common practice.

Mike Gillis' interviews are always so insightful! I've always been a huge fan of his. It's too bad that the Canucks didn't find an ideal replacement when he was let go from the GM position.

Awesome to hear some of these stories, still such a shame about the heritage classic. Lou didn't deserve that, aeserves his number in the rafters

The league let Jersey off without a cap penalty, but with the Nucks...they nailed to the wall.

Mike Gillis is so insightful and introspective. I really respect how he was ahead of the curve as a hockey executive.

Great interview. Good questions, and candid, insightful answers. That 2011 NHL finals loss was brutal as a lifelong Canucks fan, and hearing some of the behind the scenes details was cathartic. You can tell when Mike was talking about it that it was an emotional topic.

Wish we lived in a world where local media and hockey executives could have this sort of conversation when they were still active.

Completely agree on retiring his number, as one of the best goalies of his time and better than any of the three goalies they put into the Hall this year. If you were only going to hang just two Canucks jerseys on merit, it would be Luongo and Linden.

  • @mattblom3990

Where the Canucks missed the boat is a dual McLean-Luongo retirement of #1. That would have made so much sense in my opinion.

Dave Nonis was the best. He brought in Luongo via blockbuster trade and re-signed the Sedins to an affordable multi-year contract. Alain Vigneault and Nonis’ vision of “building from the farm” paid off in spades despite the irritation from the fanbase. Gillis wasn’t terrible, but rode off the coattails of the previous GM’s more than anything.

Gillis has the ultimate persona for a GM in Canada. Very shrude, bold, direct, insightful, yet compassionate and a good leadership qualities for an organization.

A bit of scapegoating on Mike’ part blaming Torts for having the Sedin’s block shots. He knew what he was getting hiring Torts. The whole league knows the book on him.

Mike is a hockey genius. That's just fact. However even genius is only so able to influence the effects of sports solely for the fact that nobody is infallible? I'll always be a huge fan of Gillis and that's that. Well deserved.

I have a lot of criticisms about mikes tenor but at least he wasn’t responsible for the sad decade we had under Jim Benning.
And PS I must add he did far more good things than bad.

MG hired Tortorella. He should have been asked before hiring. What is your plan for Sedins. The loon would have said I want to turn them into brawlers and goons and MG should have said send in the next interview. Gillis did not get another GM job. Better than the loon Grizzlies had as a first GM. Who has yet to get another GM job in the NBA and never will.

  • @rubberduckie5518

Gillis was handcuffed with the goaltending drama. The Sedins were aging and draft lotteries didn’t pan out. Victim of bad luck.

I was with Dan Russell I was not a fan of mike Gillis the worst gm in Canucks history remember he took over a team that Brian Burke and Dave nonis built but instead mike Gillis got all the credit for the 2011 team that went to game 7 Gillis had very huge ego that got in the way of
