The admirals weren't really trying tho, this was just supposed to be a cool moment. The powerscaling is pretty fluid in One Piece which is annoying at times because it makes no sense, but gives Oda more freedom and less explaining to do.

That fruit was already OP from the start there was simply no need for an awakening. That was the awaken gura gura, but ofc white beard in his old age with all the hakis can use the awaken version, since the epicentre is outside his body is the awaken version of the fruit, still to this day the most powerful demonstration of any akuma no mi, more powerful than the mother flame. The insane fact is that black beard also has the awaken darkness fruit and also uses all the hakis, so when he steals it from whitebeard he can immediately use its awaken version.
When luffy sees some powerful move he says sugheeeee but when it's something that is just... just then his reaction is this the eye thing that oda does to characters when they have trauma or some scary scene then bruvvv

Quite simply, the Yonkous of the Ancient Era were at a completely different level, that gives us a glimpse of the level of power that people like Garp or Roger had, who were the strongest in the world, without the need to use Akuma No Mi powers
