    Rugs have always been seen as a trip hazard so people didn't want me to have them. Now I want rugs! But how do I put down rugs and keep the edges down?
    I *still* can't get my parents to understand that more lighting is not always better.
    Love my smart speakers. So helpful.

      I would say that if they are concerned about a trip hazard go with a low pile rug or something that’s really heavy like shag which won’t lift. I have furniture right on the corner so it never lifts there either. I think they also make rug tape so it keeps the rug anchored to the ground and grippy rubber bumpers which I have under my rug which also serve the same purpose. I feel you on the light thing. My parents were all about the extra lighting and it was way worse for me.

    I was so excited when I figured out that I could put different textured rugs in front of my desk and bed to guide myself around the space. I'm staying in a new house right now and I really don't realize how nice my space is until it's gone-the kitchen here is super cramped and I keep sniping myself in the ankles on low pieces of furniture with sharp corners.

      Boy do I feel you on that one! My last place wasn’t nearly this good and has strange angles in it. I was always bumping into things and abusing my shins haha. I hope you settle into your new place and find a good way to navigate.

    The cues at right angles is so so smart and helpful. Weoved into our apartment before I lost any vision and I've been so happy that my bedroom has a hallway that essentially dumps me into my bed, so useful to be able to trail my hand along the wall and know exactly where ii am at the end if the day. I still have a fair amount of vision but my eyes tire easily so I'm trying to learn and implement more systems that will allow me to move around not using my vision. Thanks so much for this video.

      I’m so glad you found some of the tips helpful! It can be so wonderful to have great design that basically drops us exactly where we need to be! Even though my eyes can’t see much they tire really easily too so I can empathize with that! Fatigue headaches and vision exhaustion are no fun!

    You're right about the lighting conditions needing to be right. I live with my family who is sighted, and they like their lights on. Some days when I'm particularly light sensitive, I either have to turn off the lights, or just wear sunglasses in side the house.

    • @UnsightlyOpinions
      @UnsightlyOpinions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ugh do I feel you on that one. I hate wearing sunglasses in the house. When I was growing up I was always asking to turn down the lights or close the blinds and they just said put on your sunglasses. You are the only one it’s bothering. And it annoyed me so much. I can’t say why. Haha. Now at my house it’s my lighting rules. You get out a head lamp if the lights are too low 😝 I don’t really make them do that, I’ll turn on better lights that are indirect, but but I think they never really got it.

    Hi Tamara!
    Such a very informative video. Using flow and tactile markers. Love your idea, of using rugs, using flow to navigate around rooms in the house.
    Love your ideas, of using braile stickers to navigate om Button control panels on cookers etc. I use my Google Home for lighting, cooking and other things, have extra secondary pull down, light blocking blinds over all windows, as well as inbuilt internal blinds in all windows, as the outside light becomes very overwellming, and just pours into the house from outside, during this time of year, when there is a lot of highly reflective Snow outside. I use different shades of colours, to define, different contrasts around the house. I just Love your well thought through ideas, around the house, undercounter lighting, just brilliant, making the areas of the house, so very accessable and really easy to navigate. So Cosy. Thank you Tamara for sharing your experience, so really helpful and I plan to use some of your ideas, to improve my navigation around the house. Kind regards Tony from Scandinavia. Thank you!

      Thanks Star! I do my best trying to be detailed as that is what I would want too! I’m so glad you find it comprehensive.
      Be my eyes is an app for people who are blind or low vision where they can call either random or specialized help from someone who is sighted. It’s completely anonymous and volunteer based and free. The sighted person can see through the blind person’s phone camera much like a FaceTime call. It’s been very helpful in so many situations!

    Ring video cool things I would add is in my kitchen. I do have voice controlled appliances such as my microwave my oven I can simply tell my Amazon device to set the oven to 350° or run in microwave for three minutes. Add power level six whatever I need to do and the other thing for the kitchen is I have a touchless faucet so I can just go over and wave my hand over the Fossett and the water turns on or I can ask my Amazon device to dispense water at a specific temperature and a specific quantity and it will do it so these are very handy tools especially when your hands are all cooking and you don’t wanna touch the handles on your Fossett just to wash them and then third thing in the kitchen is my pendant lights. My pot lights, and my undercabinet lights are all on independent dimmers that are controlled by mine Amazon device as well and so I can set up scenes with those or set up routines and by doing this, I can walk into the kitchen and say daytime or I can walk into the kitchen say evening and it sets the lighting as appropriate for those types of days I can even you have my pendant lights much brighter in the restroom much darker just really depends on what my needs are so food for thought.

    • @UnsightlyOpinions
      @UnsightlyOpinions  ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds amazing! I can't wait until I'm in my next place and putting in all of those things! The appliances with voice is such a game changer. I've been exploring that recently and it can be tough to find and you are limited to only a couple of companies with that capability. But the Fossett is something I've never heard of. Absolutely fabulous. Thanks for sharing! :)

      I’m so glad you liked it! There are always many things that I think should be naturally re-designed like packaging to make it accessible for all, but in terms of specific product, it would be hard to narrow it down to one thing.

  • @soaringeagle5418

    You have more design sense than most fully sighted people. The closest I come to design is when I create my own sweater patterns or when I'm plating a dish I've cooked. Your space is functional and looks fantastic too. I was curious, do you tack your carpets and rugs down? If I had loose rugs I would be tripping over the edges all the time unless they were firmly anchored around all sides.

    • @UnsightlyOpinions
      @UnsightlyOpinions  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! It’s been a journey to learn what works and what doesn’t. I would love to know how to plate a dish better! It’s something I definitely don’t do ver well. :)
      I use a really thin anti-slip mat underneath all of my mats and that seems to have made a huge difference in keeping the edges down. I don’t think they’ve curled or I’ve had problems with them since doing that. I also find bigger rugs tend to move less too, so win win!

      It would depend on your need. As a wheelchair user rugs are harder to maneuver and move on. As a blind person it’s an excellent tactile marker
