    Since I shoot often around the Salt River, this video hit a bit closer to home. Absolutely stunning what you were able to accomplish. with these light set ups. I'm just a hobbyist at this point, but I am starting to explore the use of speedlights and strobes for outdoor portrait shots.

    @ 4:55 the perfect location for catchlight is 2 o'clock or 10 on the other side, and loop on the nose would be lower and not horizontal and you can carve her beautiful cheek bones with slightly raining the light 1-2 inches, but sunset is horizontal …what a stunning image..!!

    Photos looked great, just not sure if they are "selling" the fact that she's a makeup artist. It barely looks like she has any makeup at all! Admittedly the "natural" look suits her. I would've gone with a full studio portrait, key, fill, kicker, hair light. (specially with that pink hair! could've been on FIRE!)

    Good video but that's not soft light in most of the examples. The shadow transitions very quickly which makes it hard light, but the shadows are very well placed and controlled.

    • @stanspb763
      @stanspb763 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For soft light, it needs to be a larger relative source diameter than the subject. That small softbox would need to be about 18 inches from her for the relative size of the source be large enough to wrap around her face. At the distance shown the hardness is very little different than a bare bulb which would have had more might. That size softbox would be useful for tight headshots with it just outside the frame. But with hard light, most of the shots worked out fine or her style.

    • @dayleyhighlights
      @dayleyhighlights 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stanspb763 You are correct! To get the softest light you would want the softbox in as close as possible and also probably best to switch to the soft fabric diffuser. For a 24" softbox a distance of 24-36 inches is usually good, but certainly the closer the better to make the light as big as possible relative to the subject.

    @doncooper2344 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    These are super fun and instructive.
    A couple of comments, hopefully taken in context. The first image struck me as weird. The sun is clearly on the left -- you can see the shadows on the water -- but the light on the subject is coming from the right. I think it would have been better to have the MagBox on the left so it matched the sun angles. As it was, the shot created a vague but uncomfortable feeling.
    Second, agree with the other comment that this light is not all that soft in many of the images. (That's not necessarily a bad thing. Directional softer light is great. It's why you put grids on a softboxes.) What happens if you use the regular diffuser cloth, move closer, or both? (I have a kit on order so not gratuitous curiosity).
    Third, and this may be nitpicking, what you describe as a "double rainbow" is standard loop lighting with a key and a fill and a rim or hair light provided by the sun. I think those shots were very flattering but the terminology might be confusing.
    Finally, I think the previous comment about the sun and the mountains being off was because the position of the flash makes it appear that the sun is shining from in front of the mountain. That's physically impossible so your eye automatically goes there and your brain starts thinking about how this could happen. Had the flash been a little higher it would be coming from the rim of the saddle, where the sun could come from. Could have gotten the same look without having the flash look fake.
    Anyway, thanks again for the video. It was great.

    Doesn't the model turn blue or orange as well, when the gels are turning the sky that color?

    • @dayleyhighlights
      @dayleyhighlights 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tom, the gels are turning the model blue or orange. But then you push your white balance in camera the opposite direction, thereby neutralizing the light on your subject but shifting the sky. For example if I want Gold warm skies. I put a blue gel on flash and aim it towards my subject. The light on her is now blue and her skin tones blue. So to fix that I warm it up in the camera by shifting my white balance kelvin temp. Then shoot another photo. Now she looks great with natural skin tones but my sky is now pushed to be very warm. Hope that makes sense.

    What was metering mode set for these shots?

    • @dayleyhighlights
      @dayleyhighlights 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sandesh Kumar I use Evaluative but I don't meter exactly as the camera is saying I should. I will sometimes over or underexpose, but usually that metering mode will get me close to where I want to start.

    7:44 is rainbow set up plus rim light?

    • @dayleyhighlights
      @dayleyhighlights 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That b-roll doesn't really match the shot actually. Now that I'm watching that, it's something the video editor missed. The result photo, I was actually standing where that rim light is and it only had one MagBox camera left and one MagBeam behind the subject.

      Hi Shivam, I don't personally own a Sony camera but if I get my hands on one someday I'd be happy to do it.

    What flashes is user here??

    • @dayleyhighlights
      @dayleyhighlights 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't recall for each shot but the flashes I use the most are my Godox AD200's. I have two of those. I also have two Flashpoint Li-On Speedlights.

    What I find weird is that the sun is throwing shadows from left to right, but your flash light the opposite, it looks very distracting in those cases.

    • @dayleyhighlights
      @dayleyhighlights 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jeena, yeah in the lighting world they call that cross light. I just used the sun as one source and my flash as the other.

    • @jeenaparadies
      @jeenaparadies 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dayleyhighlights hm, I guess I was mostly thinking about the first shot where the sun is harsh in the background and drops really very dark shadows and then the sun doesn't really look like a fill in light on the model, there you just see the shadows from the strobe. But I think I get the idea now.

    • @dayleyhighlights
      @dayleyhighlights 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeenaparadies in that first shot the sun was camera left - you can see it lighting up the trees in the background along side the river. The second image (where she is completely dark) you can see how the sun is adding to the scene. The third shot is mainly lit by the MagBox, with the sun just adding some depth to the background but not really adding any additional light on Brooke. Hope that helps explain the lighting a little bit.

    Sorry, but in first half of the video in most of the shots there are far too many harsh shadows, either on the model or on the ground...

    You overexposed the lady in all images, i kind of like the making of videos more than the final image. The fake sunset was also unnatural.
