"Ignore the haters"
don't you mean criticism?
Game looks awful for an AAA game and that's the truth. Looks like a PS4 game.
Graphics are not good. We're simply saying that there is more than graphics.@@tksinister1786
@@Fextralife graphics, movement, fighting, mini games inside a game 🎯 facial expressions, unrealistic hair, eyes and mouth movement. There's a lot of things that are not right at least for me, I demand a lot of a game especially if I have to pay for it.
@@Fextralife you are a complete joke
I loved "Ghost of Tsushima" and the Nioh games so I've been meaning to check this out regardless of review scores.
I agree. A lot of people are just coping to favor DD2 which looks worse and worse the more I learn about it.
This looks like pure fun. DD2 looks sorta like a headache to play
Ghost of Tsushima combat is more realistic and just cooler, slower paced.
Don't expect Ronin to be like that. It's kind of like sekiro, but more flashy.
You can juggle enemies in the air with a pistol.
I don't like that. It makes this game look odd. They should have just made it a new ninja gaisen if they were gonna make combat that way
It's like sekiro but mix of hack and slash in there. It's very hard to describe.
Like sekiro, you can only really kill an enemy, after you show your defense.
This one seems like you have more opportunity to get lucky
This isn't surprising, in Nioh 2 you could also juggle enemies in the air. This game is more of a mix of Nioh and Sekiro than anything else. Comparing it to GoT is just wrong@@Teah8cbdude
@@joswasi4144 yeah I more mentioned it cause the op. Ghost is more, traditional typical samurai combat games. There are mobile games similar.
This, yeah I agree, more mix of souls but faster action, more technical but, just too flashy. I didn't really expect that from the short previews months ago. It seemed every new trailer, it would look even more strange
I have a soft spot for games with a historical setting so this one is right up my alley
Reviews for more unknown quantities that aren't just riding a wave of media hype to an easy 9 really test the reviewer. Thank you for actually talking about the game and not just what the game isn't.
Exactly, I was just telling a friend of mine that I've seen most reviewers talk about what game it isn't and not what this game is that makes it unique or worth your time if it is.
Thats why you dont trust those guys...have your own opinion based on reviews like this one
@ismaelbouissef4436 I like to purchased based off of gameplay shown. Usually the early access reviews have some if their own gameplay not provided by the developer to look good.
This is why i only follow a few channels that i know will give a fair objective review and that know what they are talking about, for example i always come here for every Soulslike title.
Plenty of reviews like this
Regardless if Rise of Ronin meet many players' expectation, I gotta say 2024 has been a great year for japanese games so far. Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth, Tekken 8, Persona 3 Reload, Dragon's Dogma 2, Unicorn Overlord, FF VII Rebirth. It's still only March but wow
EDIT: Also Palworld, Granblue Fantasy Relink
Now that you mention it...the only games worth playing so far have been made in Japan
You forgot about palworld. All this year I have only been playing Japanese games. I wonder if Japanese games have gotten that better or western games gotten that bad. Probably both
Ubisoft presents... Weeb's Creed
@@C00lBeanz95 oh yeah Palworld is still going strong now. I forgot to include that because i haven't personally played it myself. Anyway, i don't think japanese games are getting better, there's always great japanese game in every year but early 2024 is really bad for western games. The one new major release that I find good from western studio recently is only Helldivers 2. It's just a really bad early year for western games and japanese games just keep releasing back-to-back these 3 months
@@MentokTheMindTaker pretty much, yeah. Although Helldivers 2 is great too
I don’t know why a 7 or 8 / 10 game is suddenly “not worth playing” or whatever people are saying. not every game needs to be a 10/10 revolutionary masterpiece. I get it’s $70 but I still feel like people are too harsh on this one.
ROTR it’s bad with PS3 graphics
@@vtg1800do you NPC casuals have any other criticism other than graphics?
@@hundkebab2433 Some blurry eye gamer can’t compare the graphics 😂
@@vtg1800you still didn’t answer his question
You said it. It's 70 dollars. That's alot for alot of people. So heck yeah It needs to be perfect. But I did get the plat on PSN, loved the gameplay. But though the story was terribly done, interesting story premise set in historical events. Just done terribly.
I am mainly excited for the setting, 19th century Japan is definitely unexplored territory in most gaming history
Very true.
Only Like A Dragon Isshin has the same setting afaik.
Can recommend the game if you’re into the bakumatsu period.
If you like that time period, you should check out Way of the Samurai 1 and 2 which both released on PS2, there is 4 of them in total but I never played the last two. Very fun story driven games.
@@savekittiesgettitties2801Way of the Samurai 4 was really good
This is why I was excited for this game amd knew I'd still play it despite review scores.

Its obv not perfect but, the fact its not like Nioh or some random souls llike game may prove in time to be its greatest strength.
Rise of the Ronin’s graphics remind me of “Way of the Samurai” series. Not the greatest but the gameplay is solid. Rise of the Ronin also reminds me a little of the Kengo series from PS2. I love it
Dude Way of the Samurai was so good back in the day!
This game gives me WOTS vibes in general.
The whole reason I played the Nioh games was because they reminded me of Onimusha. Yeah I got heavy Way of the Samurai vibes from Rise of the Ronin too. Expressly the whole picking sides with all sides having interesting characters. I also kept forgetting the name of this and would call it Way of Ronin.
All this has me wishing went with Ronin instead of Dd2.
Such is life
I loved this franchise it needs to be remade in current gen
This game and the show Shogun is still airing. It is good to be a fan of this setting!
Lol Shogun put me into a real Japanese history groove and is ultimately the reason why I bought this over Dragons Dogma 2, I figure I'll go straight through this game where as I'll take my time soth DD2.
Shogun is great
same boat. Im playing both GOT and Rise at the same time lol.
💯 im literally watching shogun as i wrote this in my phone
Shogun is such a great show! Episode 7 really got things kicking off!
The saber stance with the stance hopping around is literally the dude from ninja gaiden 😂🤦🏽 that’s actually dope
Great review man, good stuff, you can tell it you really played the game and were thoughtful about what yous aid.
Gonna assume this is sarcastic
Some of my favorite games have scored 7 & 8 so I’m very excited to check this out after Rebirth
Well spoken on both this and Dragons Dogma 2, Im going to play both and probably start with DD2,
Ronin is a buy when it drops to 40.00 definitely DD2 on release
@@adamantiumreaver4283And yet they both have the same review scores :)
@@XxWolfxWaRioRxX review scores are not too important to me. Its more how the game feels and if it engages me in itself. I’ve recently let go of review scores. For example I played Scars Above recently and its my first 100% achievements, but more than that, the game kept me engaged all the way till the end. I was very amazed. 🔥
@@adamantiumreaver4283 Dragons Dogma is basically just the first game with more content, the enemy variety is bad and the performance is awful so not sure why you think DD2 is so good
@@adamantiumreaver4283 Scars Above was definitely a solid game
I'll be playing this for the open world pre-Meiji / Meiji Japan. I live here and I've always wanted to explore the old cities of Tokyo and Yokohama like how I see them in vintage pictures. And the bakumatsu / bakufu story is always interesting (and relatively unexplored setting in RPGs)
So many people are talking about the combat not being as complex as nioh but the devs specifically stated that, that wasnt what they were going for in the BTS( behind the scenes). They werent looking for crazy difficulty or anything. This IS NOT a "Souls-like". Which is why this game will also have multiple difficulties. This is also team ninjas first crack at an actual real open world if im not mistaken. This game also has a move narrative focus than their other games which they also stated. It seems like they put quite a bit of effort into the game imo. I think everyone just needs to chill out and just actually give the game a chance first. As long as they update it to address the issue's and take care of the community im kool....Also great review @Fextralife
I agree the game shouldn't be labeled as bad because "it isn't Nioh".
However, the combat is a clear downgrade the moment you know who the devs of the game are and it wouldn't hurt the experience one bit if the combat wasn't simplified to such degree. Narrative focused gameplay shouldn't mean simple combat.
I love team Ninja for their identity ( the combat , the Challenges, level designs …..) . As i see in this review they were less focusing on combat and more on narratives , which most of players how bought team ninja’s games didn’t care about it. And i saw another review which said the open world is inspired from Ubi soft games, now i am really confused about it.
I will buy the game later after i finish DD2.
Well they messed up then. The crazy combat was literally the only reason people were playing their games. That and their new game system which was way better than anything else. They worked 8 years to give us a mediocre sekiro and ghost clone.
@@petershahan533gotta love them for putting emphasis on narrative…and then delivering dead-faced NPCs
Complex doesn't equate to hard. This is a clear step down from their previous games when it comes to the combat.
If you liked nioh or ghost of Tsushima I don't understand how you couldn't like this game. Although you don't get any special powers, the combat style is way more fun than nioh, plus there is way more things do than nioh and it's not the same repetitive mission. The stat and skills aspect to the game are way easier to use; and if you don't want the game to make you contemplate suicide, you actually have the choice of making the game more forgivable or difficult.
Again I say it, only reviewer I look forward too. Follow your game guides as well to make me powerful! Keep it up Fextra! A+ content.
This is like the Way Of The Samurai game I've always wanted.
This is what I wanted to hear
I was on the fence. But now I’m sold, personally overall I like what I’m seeing in terms of gameplay. My only real issue is the graphics IN CERTAIN AREAS (not literal areas to be clear)
This game started to grow on me. Love exploring and striking down bandits and other type of higher ranking rogue samurais. You can even pick a fight with other Ronins who are not outlaws therefore if u kill them u may give rise to your wanted level
Have you been able to master the Shinto Munen-Ryu or have i run into a glitch??!! I swriously need help with this its driving me crazy i know its little but its something thats stopping me from continuing its one of my favorite combat styles for the katana:/
Great review….New sub, going to pick this up today, many thanks
I spend over 40h only in the 1st area ( Yokohama) just because I like to complete all challenges before moving on. I really like the combination of Open world exploration, combat with different weapons and Allies/Bond system.
My only issue ( for now) with the game is the empty open world - it's huge, it's great, it has a lot of villages and forest but very few enemies to fight. I would love to fight groups of bandits more often between villages.
I highly recommend the game. It's worth it even on full price.
Great review. Looking forward to playing this!
I want to buy this game. When you do parrying, do you get the haptic feedback on your dualsense controller?
I love this style of game. For once I will ignore the reviews and give it a go. I think it may be more up my street than it was for most reviewers. Can't wait!.
Really Nice overview of the game. Thank you very much for the video
Thanks for an honest review, I will give it a try tomorrow!😊
Would you say the combat keeps up with the playthrough length? I'm a little concerned with the idea that normal enemies have too much health turning it into Assassins creed slog. Even Ghost of Tsushima sometimes felt like that depending on the difficulty setting.
If you can master the counterspark, the combat would be pretty fast. If you miss it often, you might be more compelled to do stealth kills after a while
Looks awesome especially after the DD2 performance issues I'll get this first then that after its hopefully fixed
Same. That 30fps or lower put me off
Eh performance, story, enemy variety there's plenty of reasons to avoid dragons dogma
@@HumanTank12 um no, DD2 is excellent. Don’t spread nonsense
Absolutely special and amazing
@BooBooDaFoo330 No, it isn't. If you think that you have terrible standards for what games should be. An example of how lazy dragons dogma is would be that you don't even need to touch the giant for it to die, lmao. Lazy developers.
That's why is one of the few reviewers I still respect. Your arguments make sense, you are a true gamer, independent and believe your words can make a difference on your viewers. Thanks for being honest with us. Keep up the good job. I will be playing this after FF7 Rebirth.
Pulled the trigger today and while i gotta get used to countersparking consistently, the combat is fun as hell and im happy to have more open world samurai shenanigans.
I want this game pretty much just to be a female samurai and because I heard there are kitties all around the map that you can pet for upgrades. Are there hints to where the kitties are? In Superman Returns, you can hear their meows when you're close to them, and then they have a glowing blue orb around them when they are in front of you. Does this game do something similar?
I was wondering, how many missions can be completed with just stealth? You talking about stealth intrigued me. I've been wanting a good stealth game set in Japan since the last good Tenchu. Is this possibly what I'm looking for?
I like the ambition of Rise of Ronin. Seems like the games going to be a little underrated. You never mentioned in the review, but can your character climb buildings like in AC?
Yes I believe u can climb buildings yes.
With the grappling hook i guess...tomorrow well find out
They can, but its limited to vaulting on roofs + grapple hook
Yes, you can use grappling hook on the edges of the buildings and towers and than there are places on the roofs where you use grappling hookvwhich slings you into the hight to use the glider.
Better than I expected but just makes me want Nioh 3 😭. Think I’ll wait for a price drop before grabbing this.
Nioh 3 would be insane.
So excited for this game but it has to wait a good while due to backlog, Helldivers 2. Unicorn Overlord followed by Elden Ring DLC
What a great, comprehensive review - subbed
I loved Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty so hoping I enjoy this just as much. Ridiculous that it's releasing same day as DD2 though. Who thought that was a good idea?!??
Yea cant afford both so ronin gonna have to wait :/
Wo long was free on Xbox
After the added mtx and features behind a paywall in DD2, im picking this up.
@@duckbit9657There is no paywall, but go off I guess.
@duckbit9657 Yeah I'm getting DD2 when it's at least half off.
Its funny. I was so hyped for DD2, but the more I watch and hear about it, the less I like it, especially with 30fps and no horse or travel options.
The opposite for Rise of the Ronin where It didn't catch my eye until I watched gameplay and loved it more and more. GoT may be more beautiful, but the combat, glider, gun, grappling hook, and weapon/skill building in this looks exciting!
yea same, just from the game play ronin looks a lot more exciting.
I watched fighting cowboys review as well, and he pointed out quite a bit of things as well. That's what's makes games so great is their subjectivity.
Personally, I had the opposite effect where RotR was strongly the gane I was going to get and keeping an eye on DD2. After checking everything out I'm liking DD2 a lot more, and man, I just can't get over the horse animation in this game, lol. It's silly, I know but man
little skyrim baby filtered by no fast twavel ;^(
@@BenDover91187playing rotr and in rl horse animation feels ok
You don't need fast travel, the game world isn't massive and as soon as you leave the first major city for the story you're 80% completed lmao
I’m gonna get it this weekend and immerse myself in its intriguing environment and lore. Let’s go!
Is easy mode accessible to a to a gamer like me who won't touch souls like games because of how hard it is or is easy mode not really easy at all? This will determine my purchase
Content is always that matters ! As long as I get a good amount of playtime I'm okay with it. Will spend a whole month playing this and than buy DD2 post understanding the performance on console. If its a constant 30 fps I will buy it. But from what I heard, there are huge frame drops during battles which I wouldnt like. Lets hope for the best. I am actually rooting for DD2 PERFORMANCE. Gonna spend time on these 2 games until June and then get back to my baby elden ring 😁
Cannot wait to boot this up after work today.
I’m so close to purchasing this game it’s in my cart! Lol
Did you regret it?
@@biddlybongwong na I've really enjoyed it actually. 22 hrs in
Do you guys think they will provide game updates to tweak the gameplay to have better experience?
Sounds like everything I loved about Ghost of Tsushima (the setting), Nioh 2, and Sekiro (the fast paced, parry-based arcade combat) in one package. Definitely going to be picking this up soon.
perfect i have 3 weeks off for spring break
I gonna buy this game sometime next week or after that I like how the combat is an the graphics ain’t that bad
it’s a shame we have yet to hit the highs of combat; since Nioh 2, but I will definitely try to pick this one up down the line. It at least looks like it plays a lot better than Wo Long, and I will probably be more interested in the story in this over Stranger of Paradise.
Looks great to me. I wish we had it now on PC as I find the beginning of the year has been extremely dry, and who knows how long they will take to port it.
Man I was picking either this or dragons dogma up day 1 and it's getting real hard to choose as I love the first Dragons Dogma while loving Team Ninja's gameplay design since playing Ninja Gaiden Black when I was younger.
Guess I'm gonna flip a coin
There are streams for both available soon so you can try live gameplay as well
Sounds like either one will be a hit with you regardless. My only issue is that dragons dogma looks like it’s almost the exact same as the first one, just with better graphics. I want to play it but personally I’m leaving toward ronin first.
I was in the same boat.
I chose DD2 based on what I saw in Fextra and Fighting Cowboys reviews. The tie breaker for me was the horse animation in this game and the literal checklist of open world things to do, whereas I enjoy the freedom and no hand holding of DD2. Did I mention the horse animation?
I'm a daredevil I choose both 😅
Okay, so the game didn't deliver enough for the 80£.
However, i like how Fextra is still trying to make some good points about the game.
Yet, a game that doesn't deliver on a market standard should not cost more than the market standard .
Don’t listen to the haters - spend your $70 on subpar gaming.
Maybe there is something to the “hate”. Maybe that word gets abused.
Good point. It may not be as bad as some people try to make it out to be but idk why people think it's worth the same asking price as games we consider masterpieces
ff7 rebirth
Exactly, I don't understand this review.
"It's good but it's bad", ok, lol.
Streamers and youtubers should only make good points about a game if it makes sense to. A purely subjective, biased opinion. Not to just simply gush over a game everyone else is doing the same with, for clicks
Definitely picking this up!
Does my character actually talk or is he still mute?? It’s not a deal breaker atm the moment but will be for future titles? Having William talking was a strong point imo, having Hide being mute was weak. 😅
This game is so much better than I thought.
I was so excited for DD2 because of all the hype, but Ronin is grest from the start and im so glad I researched both first.
I m waiting to receive It i Hope Tomorrow
Thx for the review i look for deep review and i was thinking of what game should i buy final fantasy or ronin and i hear a lot of ppl say this game( Ronin ) is not good some ppl say is bad some ppl say is not worth to play to buy but i watch your review and is change my mind thx for help i buy this game
Yeah I’ve had this preordered for a while. Been wanting something kinda like a more open Sekiro, and this looks like it’s gunna hit that. Plus a great time and place.
This game reminds me of "The Way of the Samuari". The problem is they released this the same week as Dragons Dogma 2
The problem turned out to be that Dragon's Dogma 2 released months before it should have. That's a bargain bin sale now for when it's patched.
THANK YOU for such a detailed description on all parts of the game! Solidified the pre-order over DD2 lol

How does it work with the twin? Is she with us only in missions or we can choose between the two when we go to the open world? Can we replay missions?
You can make both. It's only a woman if you make it a woman
@@Jawf94I know we can create both but i want to know the importance of the twin and if we can switch when we want. I don't see the twin that much in videos so i wonder if the twin is really important.
@@virgil6298 It's a story element. You'd need to spoil the story to find out about the twin.

Such a great video!
I'm stil deeply invested in Unicorn Overlord and had to choose between DD2 and Rise of the Ronin. I choose the first but wil be picking this up a bit later down the road. Thank you for the not so bitter review. Your one of the few tbh. Lots of hate for this game..

Wish I had the time to play both this and dragons dogma. I’m envious of your job, man 😂
Great review 👏
Good review!
I have two questions is there transmog like nioh and is there ng+?
I put 20 hours into this game over the weekend and i did not expect to do that at all. Its a great game, its the combat/upgrades that kept me playing. It's so easy to complete things and the combat system is wild. It does require a lot of skill though, the game on Normal is easy enough to progress but holy smokes i am constantly getting my ass handed to me. Its so satisfying though when you do dominate against enemies.
Opening bad guy is Matthew Perry? Why couldn’t we just be FRIENDS.

Nice review, I would say this reminds me of PS2 Double A games. I’m going to check it out.
So many good games out right now. I’ll be getting this but after Dogma 2.
It is pretty oblivious that whoever played this game created his character inspired by Nioh 1 main character.
i think that character is a preset in the character creation. Same w/Ryu Hayabusa (who i’ll be playing as lol)
@@tlungu962 One of these days will get a Ninja Gaiden. I just want a remake or remaster on PC :(
Thanks for clearing up things after the unfair negative reviews. Might pick this up, plus games about ancient Asian culture are pretty cool.
I just picked a physical copy on ebay for 55.99 (Got lucky) i purchased tje games based on your your unbiased review.
I was going to get it mainly because of coop, but I wasn't expecting them to go with one of the worst cooperative play options out there.
Just let me do the whole story and free roam with my buddy.
Seems like its a fun romp through Japanese history. I loved Nioh 1+2 and Team Ninja games. I will pick this up after I'm done with DD2 and a couple of my backlog. 😊
I’m not a fan of nioh tbh, it’s like playing geometry wars with the amount of shit on the screen, so this won’t be a disappointment to me.
is there controller vibration?
Just beat it after putting 100+ hours on it and while it starts off a bit slow, i absolutely loved it. The combat gets real addicting once you start unlocking different styles and weapons. And theres a bunch of side missions you can do depending on the bonds you make.
Gaming discourse is so interesting. I think most people don't see this game as ''bad'', but rather, ''bad in relation to the price point''. So, it might atm get some undue criticism - whereas, a few months or even weeks down the line if/when a sale happens, it'll likely be looked at more favorably.
I'll be honest, this game looks to be checking a lot of boxes for me. You can tell it's no master piece, but there's something there for those that enjoy open world romps. A 'Team Ninja open world' is appealing so even if it doesn't quite land, I'm actually pretty excited to check it out when it does go on sale. I suppose as a gamer, I never really cared about getting in the door day 1. What a game initially costs is barely ever a factor of how I'd judge it - and ultimately, time always washes away the cost to quality ratio debate (unless you're Nintendo).
Watched a few reviews and while I'd rather pick up Dragon's Dogma 2 over this if I had to pick, personally, I'm just gonna wait for a sale and experience it whenever that happens.
This is a big win for me, looks really fun. People complain too much about everything nowadays I’m just glad we have another samurai based game on PS5.
I agree. Im excited to play it. So many people will just attack me because I like it. Some people aren't happy unless everyone else is unhappy too
Hi Fextralife, thanks for the review. You mentioned in the video how you can pretty much max out your character in the end game and have nearly all skills, so are you saying that there are basically no need for or are no builds in the way of Nioh?
There is build variety in set bonuses and choosing your weapons. There are definetely certain playstyles as well, like using Earthenballs (grenades) or specific stances
@@Fextralife Great! That’s what I wanted to know, thanks.
Honestly I was never really too excited about this game when they first announced it I started getting a little excited for it but after I just watched a couple of reviews it's kind of exactly what I thought it was going to be it's all over the place and I'm definitely not going to spend $70 on the game I'm getting dragon's dogma 2 don't get me wrong I have played neo neo 2 and other souls games and ghost of tsushima and after my experience with neo I kind of know how their storytelling is and it seems like it's still the same way I'm going to wait till it's on sale or on PlayStation Plus to try it out
This game will be a hidden gem like Nioh 1&2 were.
Wait, Date san is in the game?! 1:54
LOL
He tried to time travel to Ishin's world but got lost and ended up in ROTR
😮
I'm going to play this before DD2. I assume this will be a shorter experience thus giving me more time on my vacation to get lost in the DD world.
Me too I got them both but I am still playroom dark arisen so I think I'll go into rise of ronin first and then boot up dd2 when I finish the first one
Just got this tonight as a gift. I had really wanted another historical-esque japanese open world game to sink my teeth into. Looks really fun and i hope its got a lot of content to play and a decent story/music
Fetch quest type missions need to go like escort missions
This game looks fun to be honest, hopefully it will come to PC.
I am very much impressed with the time, effort and presentation of this review. 💯
I just picked up a PS5 having had a break in gaming. I absolutely love PS exclusives and have played PlayStation since the original came out. I also absolutely love Team Ninja games too, having played through all of them several times over. I bought this despite some poor journalistic reviews and have to admit, it’s a thing of beauty. Having a lot of fun and that is what gaming is about. I never noticed graphic quality, it just looks like a Team Ninja game :) Reviewers said the same about Wo Long and that game is brilliant too! Every time Team Ninja release something new, they generally take the best bits from previous games and take new chances on new ideas. That is something I give them a lot of respect for! Great video! You’ve earned a sub!
Already pre-ordered regardless of what people say
If you liked Nioh and Ghost of Tsushima, this is a no-brainer. And if you felt like Nioh was too hard, well this game has a difficulty setting, win-win for everyone !
Since I'm passing on Dragons dogma despite my excitement for it, I think this will fill the void quite nicely.
For me, I only play a team ninja game for crazy deep and difficult combat with tons of combo options etc.
So I’m disappointed but I guess they weren’t making it for people like me but people like me are their base so don’t bite the hand that feeds you
All you had to say was this is made by Team Ninja and I am sold.
Looks and feels good… I already preordered, not going to wait for sale…
just platinum’d Ghost of Tsushima last night. also already have all 7 soulsborne plats as well. with that, do you think i’ll love this game?
