I'm hoping to get a taxi to the forts walk around for a bit and then a taxi back to the ports again... Can't wait we leave July 6th on enchanted princess
My son and I loved San Juan. We didn’t have any agenda. We just worked our way through. Saw old town, which was pretty. Saw some parks and churches, saw a lot of cats which we loved and then came upon that fort. It was a great day.
Love old San Juan. Always wake up early to watch the approach to the port. It is one of the prettiest entrances to a harbour anywhere, especially love cruising by the forts.
I agree SJ is the best in the Caribbean, it is by far the most complete port, you have so many options, can go to a big mall or shop at tourist shops, you can go to the rainforest, you can go to various beaches, you can go to Condado which is a beach town, you can just walk all day in Old SJ that is one of the prettiest and best kept colonial cities in the hemisphere and on top of that Old SJ is packed with culture and history, plus it is really relaxed and charming
Mofongo is made with plantains and Trifongo combines mashed fried green plantains, fried sweet plantains, and boiled yuca. I prefer Trifongo with a garlic base sauce and some type of protein like chicken, steak or shrimp
Bollard is the rounded post, cleat is the "T" or "cow horn", chock is the open hole they pass the mooring line through, and bitt are the pairs of cylinders with a flat plate on the top. 24 years in the Navy, I may never be able to forget this stuff!
Brother, your breathing is so much less labored since your surgery! That was no easy walk, so well done. Happy for you that you're healthier. Keep on cruising!
😬😬 but those prices are kinda yikes! lol definitely recommend trying to go a little bit outside of the immediate cruise port area to get great food/drinks for great prices! 15-20 minute Uber ride will get you to La Placita in Santurce and I promise you won’t regret it!
Great to see you in my neighborhood. One of my ancestors (3rd great grandfather) was held as a Political Prisoner in 1887 inside of el Morro. The fort has a lot of meaning for me and sort of inspired my love for History. Whenever you visit again? Feel free to reach out and I will be more than happy to show you a few more historial places. Plus give you tips on some local non for profits doing some pretty cool tours conserving our history and super affordable at the $10 range per person.
@rauljcolon mostly he's looking forward to the beach. He loves building sand stuff and pretending he's the sandman from Spiderman knocking down all the stuff he's built. And I'm sure at least one spiderman toy will make the journey with us to save the day. He likes super heros, dinosaurs and Godzilla. I'd be interested the local non profits doing tours. But really any kid friendly activities. I've seen some hikes to waterfalls that look a bit intense for him. So maybe something beginner friendly.
@@renise011 If you are coming for a cruise stop for one day and he loves the beach my suggestion would be to take him to Isla Verde Beach which is very close to the port and my daughter’s favorite beach. I use to live on the beach. You tell a cab to take you to Hobbie Beach (takes its name from Hobbie Cats that use to be in the area) in Isla Verde. This beach is also easier to grab a cab or Uber with other places to get a meal, supermarket for any supplies, and even pharmacies. Another option is going to Playa Vacia Talega, this one is more for locals and in the town of Loiza I would say a 25-30 minute drive, the bay there is a bit calmer than Isla Verde. If you want to try some local food on the way to Facia Talega you have Piñones which has some pretty areas to eat. Since it’s August the beaches won’t be as crowded as school starts in early august over here. All beaches in the North are a bit rougher than the south. So please always review water conditions before visiting a beach. But I am sure he could have a great time with his super hero friends at least in the sand. Other options are the Fort el Morro which Tony mentions in the biog. As a kid I loved visiting it and as an adult and a photographer I take my daughter a lot. If you are here for more days I can say you might want to travel around the Island in search for more kid friendly activities. But it seems your son is like my daughter who would choose the beach of everything else.
We've only visited SanJuan on one cruise. The Celebration. We did an excursion, but when we got back from the excursion, I realized all of the cool stuff we missed that was walking distance from the ship! Next time, I'm going to explore more locally near the ship like you did!
'Consider yourself spotted' is something I'm going to have to start saying to the ships - that made me smile! I've often wondered what San Juan would look like - thanks for showing us!
We stayed a week in the El Convento hotel about 11 yrs ago and it was one of the best vacations ever. We walked all over Old San Juan, went to Isla Verde and the Condado. Great food , great beaches. Back then there was a great casino in the Sheraton hotel that we won enough to pay for our whole trip. Awesome vacation!!
Our first cruise my hubby won enough at the casino on the ship to pay for the cruise, and for everything we did on the ship (spa drinks, etc) AND had extra to come with! It was the best!! 😂
Cruising Tip: When my wife and I walk to the El Morro Fort, we bring with us ( that we pack) two mini jugs that we fill with ice. One with water and the other with lemonade.
I love Old San Juan, have been there twice, once as a cruise stop, and then spent a few days there before a cruise. We took a guided walking tour around town, been to both forts (El Moro is better), rode segways (so much fun!), took an excursion to the rain forest, did a walking dinner tour (highly recommended), had awesome food, saw a Flamenco dance show. I would not hesitate to go there again!
Loving these port videos! You can read all about people’s experience and see pictures but nothing like going along with you! And you are entertaining!😀 Thanks Tony!
Tony, there is also a smaller fort on the other side if the harbor which would cause a crossfire. There is a history of 5 battles: the attack on El Morro in 1595 by Sir Francis Drake; a second attack on El Morro and the city by Sir George Clifford, another Englishman, in 1598; a siege of El Morro by the Dutch in 1625; an invasion by 7,000 British troops and 64 warships under the command of General Ralph Abercromby in 1797; and the bombardment of San Juan by the United States Navy on May 12, 1898 during the Spanish-American War.
San Juan has so much to do for cruisers, I find it more entertaining than Nassau which is a one and done kinda port. I wish more cruise ships went to San Juan.
Seeing the Adventure in Old San Juan gives me all the feels. Got married on her right across the harbor in 04, and did our 5th anniversary on the same exact cruise with our almost 1 year old in tow and his sister on board mom. Our favorite place.
Two trips to San Juan ago I was sick aboard the Horizon. I got off, stumbled over to Walgreens, and bought out the cough and cold section there. I then went back to the ship. Hearing you mention Walgreens in San Juan and being walkable reminded me of the one and only time I've been sick on a cruise.
On one of the streets there is a local shop called Sea U Soon which has private label products at decent prices and there quality. Support PR, ALSO, right across the street is a great coffee shop also locally owned, great coffee.
OMG, Tony--the church you showed at ~15:10 was quite literally across the street from the hotel where we spent a *great* pre-cruise week back in March. That area of Old San Juan is *such* a great area to visit, with lovely boutique hotels, incredible food, interesting shops, and literally walking distance to everything (including the port). Highly recommended for those looking to do a pre-/post-cruise stay...especially first-timers!
Two Yogisms, fitting for travelers: "You can observe a lot just by watching". and "You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you are going, because you might not get there".
San Juan is our favorite cruise stop we have done walking tours , land (bus)& sea tours. I have also gone zip lining and 4 wheeler riding, and visited the forts and once just walked around old San Juan. I am looking forward to to going back again.
My mom is a huge fan of your videos and you are one of the people that she first started watching about cruises. She is usually pretty quiet but was one of the probably many people that decided to said hi to you here and you just made her day! It was great to see you!
Walk and look at parks statue’s shops along the way. There’s a yummy pastry shop. We stopped in a little storefront church to cool off and eat the pastries then we stopped to dance in a little park along the way because the music was good and locals already had the dancing going. Made for real good memories
I don't know how you can do all that walking, uphill no less, in that heat! The hills in old San Juan are daunting and yes, you can get lost. We did, years ago! Couldnt find a street that ran down to the ship- all were parallel! Props for all your filming on those hot, hilly streets!
In the early 1980’s yogi Berra came into the restaurant I worked at in San Francisco ,I was his waitress and he wrote on my tip “don’t say I never gave you nothing” ….I sold it to line cook for $50 the astros was playing the giants.
I am an amateur astronomer and have done enrichment presentations for a number of cruise lines. Last time I was in San Juan I hired a car to take me to Arecibo Observatory (an hour or so from town). Very glad I got to see it before the antenna structure failed and it was shut down.
We love, San Juan. We stayed there for a week and then we took carnival cruise to like eight different islands who is quite fun and then we stayed for another five days and sound. The Ford was actually closed during the time because there was some kind of strike or issue going on, but we did love the city and there’s so much to see.
Love Puerto Rico. We stay in Isla Verde and Condado. Quick nonstop flight from CT. People are awesome. Non-smoking island, which they should advertise more.
Fun to watch your video having just returned…I was on the Celebration that you helped “park”, lol! Wish I had run into you, would’ve made the port day even better!
I love Old San Juan. I been to the island four times, via flying and spent some time exploring it. My husband grew up on the island so it is nice to have someone who can show me around. January 2023 we went to the San Sebastian Festival in Old San Juan, it was packed but amazing fun. Not sure when we will go back go the Island, just know we will. A few hours off a cruise is just not enough time to see and experience such a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing your time there, I enjoyed seeing your time in Old San Juan.
Give me a ride when it's crazy hot. I remember mowing our yard in Pensacla. 10 minutes mowing, a half hour to cool off. It took 2 hours but only about 30 to actually mow.
Yes, I like to go back to the ship at least an hour or so early sometimes an hour and a half afraid I’m going to be left behind one time we were on an excursion and they had to wait for us. I was so nervous.
Next time you definitely need to go into both forts at some point. Maybe if you are there in January or February when it isn't so hot. They are absolutely worth it!
I agree, San Juan is a great port. When we were there, we went to the other fort and pro tip…if you show a military ID, you get free entry into the fort. People forget to use military discounts when available.
I loved all of this . Watching the Carnival Celebration dock was the view I never knew that I needed. You and Tommy’s tour was enjoyable and informative. Great camaraderie .👏👏
That restaurant you almost went to with the Trifongo is amazing (Ajo del Pais)! Check it out next time, we were there for 4 days and ate there the first day then ended up going back the next 3 days. Everything we had there was delicious and authentic.
I was in 17204 Forward Facing Balcony on the 4th sailing of the Celebration one of the best views I have ever had. I walked to both forts. Castillo San Cristobal which is the closest is not a bad walk. Now Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a trek. Both forts are worth visiting if you love History. Stopped at La Vergüenza Viejo San Juan for drink for a break on the walk. Great views of the water on the rooftop.
Great video, Tony! I took a cruise out of San Juan several years ago. I really liked wandering around the old, historical part of the city. We visited El Moro and thought it was a really cool fort! The view of the harbor was very impressive from way up on those battlements!
Tony, you are always so entertaining. Even when you are worn out, your cute personality never ceases to amaze. Thank you for taking me through San Juan. The wash your hands girl was a little obnoxious 😂 Love to you and Jenny. ❤
Love exploring old San Juan ! There's so much to see. Thanks for taking us along. I also found it interesting to watch the Celebration dock! We just sailed on her last week to Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.
On one of our trips to Puerto Rico we took the ferry across the bay. I believe it was $1 round trip!! Went to the Bacardi factory and had a great rum time!!
Wow, I was impressed that you walked all of the way to the best fort and back in all of that heat. I wouldn't want to do that walk. I enjoyed going to that fort and also to some of the squares nearby on my excursion after my cruise back in February, 2022 but we used a tour bus. I got the best disembark excursion on that trip, he asked our schedule for flights and then took us to a great lunch stop which was not a required part of our excursion. Good plan to enjoy your walking tour and not wishing you hadn't walked that far in the heat and rain. Of course your excursion day wouldn't have been as much fun if you hadn't been with your friend - good planning there too.
Went to Puerto Rico about 5 years ago and the best and cheapest port we went to. A very helpful man told us we could walk a block to the trolley and catch a free ride to the fort. It was great and went right to the entrance. We walked back so we could check out the buildings. I bought a fruit pop from a vendor that my husband said may make me sick but it was fine and very refreshing treat. This video makes me want to return soon.
Do you walk or ride when its crazy hot?
Ride for sure
I'm hoping to get a taxi to the forts walk around for a bit and then a taxi back to the ports again... Can't wait we leave July 6th on enchanted princess
Ride unless not far
Ride, not as young as we use to be. lol
Ride. I’m not acclimated. I also am against sweat.
My son and I loved San Juan. We didn’t have any agenda. We just worked our way through. Saw old town, which was pretty. Saw some parks and churches, saw a lot of cats which we loved and then came upon that fort. It was a great day.
Did you find cat street near the capitol? Anytime I go to San Juan for our festivities I love to walk yo cat street.

I totally agree.
I agree also.
We always take the free trolley up the hill and then sightsee our way down.
The local coffee is epic!! So much better! Also supports small businesses!
Spent a week in PR last year. Love PR. San Juan is definitely the best port of call in the Caribbean imo.

On one of our trips to Puerto Rico we took the ferry across the bay. I believe it was $1 round trip!! Went to the Bacardi factory and had a great rum time!!
We love San Juan. Definitely next time go into the fort, very cool inside.
Awesome video 🇺🇸🇵🇷
I love the Great Outdoors.
Tommys cool! I adore Puerto Rico. Thanks Tony!! Lovely lovely tour! 😊❤❤❤
The fort is very cool. love PR
Good job Tony! Way to get your steps in. Love your videos ❤🎉
