Knifemaking Tuesdays Week 97 - Enclosure for the Tormach PCNC1100

  • More new toys! We recently installed Tormach's new enclosure kit for the PCNC1100 CNC milling machine. It's awesome! We go over the entire install, including sandblasting and powder coating the original chip trays, installing the kit, and our thoughts on the enclosure. Also thrown in for fun, making sweet turned parts on our Tormach 15L slant bed lathe, putting winter tires on my Volvo, and Erik and I being goofballs.

    Poor job on the powdercoat and so easy for them to fix. I've been into Harleys for a long time and any powdercoat that was done like that would be going back for them to do properly. The defects will always rust lift the rest of the coating.
    About your videos, as you said you're more about taking us on a journey and I have to say thank you so much for doing so.
    I always look forward to Knifemaking Tuesdays.

    I've help out in a shop that does powder coating and if any sand was left on before the coat the boss would have killed us. Many shops wouldn't let that fly. I would be rather miffed.

    Your kids are growing up fast! And boy are they cute!
    8:00 I'd use a ScotchBrite wheel on a cordless drill or whatever it took to get all of the rust and sand out of the areas where the sand was powder coated, then wipe down with alcohol to thoroughly degrease it and clean it, then apply a few coats of a good spray enamel over the bare metal. If you don't, rust will start back in there and eat underneath the new powder coat. Similarly, if you manage to chip any of the powder coat, promptly clean and paint it with some touch up paint. The trick is to keep rust from starting. Once it gets under the finish, it'll keep bubbling the finish and you'll be back where you were. It's definitely one of those cases where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Now that the enclosure looks that good, it's worth keeping it looking good.

    John;
    Nice enclosure there.
    For those who wonder if $2,600 + freight (figure about $2,800 total) is worth it, figure it out this way.
    1/2 hour per day for cleaning chips out of shop @ $20/hour (apprentice rate) x 260 days per year = $2,600.
    50% extended tool life due to higher flood cool rates = 1 tool every two weeks x $25/tool = $550.
    Total savings in 1 year = $3,150. The enclosure pays for itself in less than 1 year, which is usually the trigger point for tool investment in most major manufacturing businesses.
    With regards to the powder coating, I would have taken the pieces back to the powder coat shop and made them re-do their work. They know they have to blow sand out of crevices prior to powder coating, they just cut corners on this. That plus the thin coating in a couple of spots is indicative of a poor job. I wouldn't recommend that shop to anyone else, no matter what the price of their work. Crap work is crap work even if it is cheap.
    Regards;
    Ron Kluwe

    John dude, you are so way more laid back then I am. First the gaps in the new enclosure. I would of been on the phone demanding to talk to everybody in that company until I got a decent refund for the shoddy thought that went in to the planning of how the pieces fit together. Why would they leave gaps in something that's supposed to keep fluid in? Then the powder coating. Wow! That company would of been sweeping up glass for days from the bricks through their windows if that was me. But you're just like ah its cool!! Great attitude!

    Dang! I had 'sweet powdercoating job' all typed in here ready to go, and then attack of the sand beast. Still looks great on most of the surfaces, and the end result with the enclosure looks awesome. I don't know why anyone would give you crap for spending money on the enclosure. When I first saw it on John's channel i figured it would be $4K at least. $2500 or whatever is, plus freight, is a good deal in my opinion. This isn't a high volume part that they are going to sell a hundred thousand of. If you get a little better tool life, a little better lighting, spend a little less time cleaning the shop and can hear a little better, it will more than pay for itself within a year.

    Throw a gopro mount in the enclosure so you can do quick and easy timelapse videos of machining, that would be pretty swell :P

  • @TrendingTopicsShow
    @TrendingTopicsShow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    John, stone or scotchbrite the table and hit that rust on the spindle nose with something. Then run a semi synthetic oil based coolant and use a refractometer to check the concentration before you run! You should never see rust again. Really, checking the concentration takes 15-30 seconds.

    • @JohnGrimsmo
      @JohnGrimsmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried to scrub off the spindle nose, I think I'll have to remove it and turn it on the lathe to get the rust off, which I will, then I'll probably clear coat it. And I will be using a new different coolant and checking it often, thanks!

    • @timmarks7252
      @timmarks7252 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      JohnGrimsmo You heard of anyone doing that? I would think the coat wouldn't last, between coolant and chips blasting it, it would chip away. Just wipe the spindle nose down with some way oil before you close up shop at night. Or spray it with something like BoeShield T-9 rust protector.

    • @TrendingTopicsShow
      @TrendingTopicsShow 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now that you have that fancy enclosure, and the manufacturing process has been documented well enough, you could run a ton of coolant and likely get better surface finish and tool life. If you're running serious flood coolant everything inside the enclosure will get wet. Modern VMC's run flood coolant pumps in the 3HP range. No need to protect any bare steel, its going to get sprayed with coolant all day. You're really best off running something oil based or derived from oil. When the water evaporates an oil film will be left behind and protect it. The only thing you need to worry about is stuff bolted down that never moves. Spray some T9 under your vac table and it should be good.

    John, great enclosure, poor powder coating job (but affordable I guess), and cute helpers...though the new guy needs another trip through safety school to remind him to put on his safety glasses before playing with the air gun.
    Rust is bad stuff. Easier to prevent than fix. I usually give tools a shot of Boeshield-T9 when I bring them home. My table saw I coat with carnauba wax, and it's still rust free after 20 years in an unheated garage. My new-to-me lathe is kept well oiled and is in a heated and A/C space so I'm hoping it stays clear of rust too, but I'll keep an eye on it...especially the accessories I don't use all the time. Entropy is a bitch!

      @Wrenchmonkey1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BigMjolnir
      I wonder how long that table saw would hold up against rusting if you used a constant stream of flood coolant when you were making cuts on it. ;)

    • @BigMjolnir
      @BigMjolnir 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know, but the 80% humidity around here in the summer isn't far from that...and doesn't have any rust inhibitors in it! :-)
      -- Mike

    • @Wrenchmonkey1
      @Wrenchmonkey1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BigMjolnir
      Not even close. Humidity is a saturation rating, not a concentration. 80% humidity is only 80% of the amount of moisture that the AIR is capable of holding. 100% humidity does not mean that the air turns into water. ;)
      If you were breathing 80% water, and 20% atmospheric air, you'd be dead, and your table saw would be rusted to dust.
