    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@virginiagomez7442 hi! So you *can* mix 1 part developer and 1 part dye but it cannot be a temporary color. It has to be a permanent, Demi or semi permanent dye for the chemicals to react properly. But adding a higher vol developer calls for higher lift resulting in a lighter tone/color! For max lift go with a 40vol

    Wow I just realized TODAY that developer is hydrogen peroxide thanks to you!!
    I've been using sun bum hair lightener to lighten my hair, and the main ingredient is hydrogen peroxide. Although it's 3%, which I have found out is equivalent to 10 volume developer.
    It's slowwwwwly lightening it, which makes sense to me now!

    I actually did this a couple of days ago before seeing this video! I always use black ink hair color can’t remember the brand. Something from Sally’s! I haven’t colored my hair in a few months. But I wanted to lighten my hair without bleach. So I got a hair brain idea and decided to pull out my 40 volume developer… and well I will say it did lighten my hair!!! Even my roots where lightened. Of course my ends are still darker but not a whole lot darker. I left it in about 30 minutes. Just be careful on the scalp it did burn lol. But definitely works. My hair is curly and I didn’t experience any damage. Just shampoo and condition used a mask after just in case!

    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats great!!✨🙌🏿 thank you for sharing your results!😁💕 this was the same thing I did my first time. The roots lightened faster bc of the heat from the scalp so I did a second round but only hit the ends and it evened out. Super minimal damage!

      @ceciliemadsen6244 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @ceciliemadsen6244
      @ceciliemadsen6244 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But i've heard that 40 devopler on real hair is too much, should i ude 30 instead?

    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Moisture for sure!
      After stripping the hair of its pigment it may feel dryer than normal so I definitely would go in with a moisturizing mask and then the next day or two (within the first week) go in with a protein mask (you have to maintain balance or else the hair will go too elastic and if too much protein treatments are used and not enough moisture is within the strands they will become brittle and break!) that’s why it’s so crucial to hydrate your hair when it’s blonde/bleached.
      I hope this helps❤️❤️❤️

    I need to lighten hair extensions just a bit. They're currently "natural" which is like a black/brown to dark brown. I just need it a shade or two lighter. Can developer alone do this?

  • @KitKat-yj8hr
    @KitKat-yj8hr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +74

    Thanks so much for this video! I don’t have the coin rn the go get my hair done at the salon and this is exactly what I want! My hair was naturally dark brown but not black so I boxed died it’s black a year ago with olia box dye. For the first time im gonna attempt to light my whole head to a nice medium brown. I was wondering though- are those extensions real hair? And did you use this method on yourself in the thumbnail of this vid? Thanks 😊

    • @KitKat-yj8hr
      @KitKat-yj8hr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, should we wait some time in between each lift process? And do we wash out the developer before going in for the next round or can we layer the developer

    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Hiii🥰 I’m glad I could help (: as for the extensions, yes, they are 100% virgin human hair I believe they are Malaysian or Brazilian curly. As for the process I did (on myself) about 3 processes of 30 minutes to achieve the level I needed before depositing color into my hair. You could shorten it to two processes of 45 minutes if you want to go light within a week!(3-4 days between each process)
      In order to accelerate how much lift within ONLY ONE process, you could even do this method with a plastic cap in the shower (the heat from your scalp and the steam will lighten the hair quicker!) Or you can use a blow dryer on medium heat will do the same but you want to AVOID letting it dry. That’s when the processing stops. You can try it on a test strand near the back (or the nape) just to see what I mean!
      My hair in the thumbnails for previous videos I did on this topic was a result of doing this process more than 2 times and they were all about 4 days to a week apart! Also I didn’t mention the heat from your scalp on the videos as I figured it could be basic knowledge but I forget not everyone knows the fundamentals of hair, so I have to mention the application!
      I would start in the darkest, most tough areas to lighten on your head (since everyone’s hair is different) and work from there. You can move slowly to insure every strand is SATURATED well since it is very forgiving and won’t lighten too fast! You may already know this but do your roots and hairline LAST!
      I really hope I could answer all your questions 💕 I understand doing your hair at home especially during these times so I wish you the best!🙏🏿❤️

      You can definitely use foils if you'd like to incubate it and make the process quicker/more effectively when applying heat. I personally used a plastic shower cap just to keep the developer wet bc if it dries out it's not processing. Adding heat or trapping the heat from your body with foils will help speed things up! That's actually a good question (;

      Hi!👋🏽❤️
      Depending on what volume developer you have already, you may want to dilute it, (conditioner is 0v AKA A neutral) that is where conditioner comes into play so that it won’t be too much on your strands. This step won’t be necessary unless you have 40v - 50v developer and wish for more subtle results

      I'd try 30v on a test strand for 30 minutes (minimum) just to get a feel on how your hair will take since I'm not familiar of your hair color history or porosity.
      You wont need to mix anything if you just buy 30 volume developer.
      You may have to process up to 3 times depending on what results you desire and how porous your hair is!
      Since you already have a lighter base the developer should lift your hair quite nicely! I really hope this helps💕

I learned this when I dyed my hair black continuously over the course of a few years and when I tried lifting it, the black really stained the mid shaft of my hair red! No matter how much lighter I went (or how much blue/green pigment I added to cancel out the red) it STILL was there😩 it was very much giving carrot top lol so just ended up growing it out and chopping it off lol I’ve learned my lesson with black hair dye bc you know what they sayyy😭😂😂

      No problem🤍🤍 I hope I could help out!
      I would never recommend box dyes knowing what I know now, but I’ve definitely done it before!! I think it’s okay sometimes if you’re hair is virgin BUT be careful w box dyes in the future! Box dyes are like mystery boxes to me lol it’s hard to know what developer or color they are even selling to create what you see on the box. As someone that’s dyed and colored hair multiple times I’m super skeptical!
      I would still lighten your hair before attempting a blonde color so that it’s light enough for the toner to take(depending on if you want a warm or cool toned blonde) Starting with a lighter base than the desired color will almost always give you way better results. I think if you just did the box dye alone it will turn out to be a medium brown/dark blonde. Nothing crazy but regardless I wish you the best luck🙏🏽🥰

    I've box dyed my hair multiple time, now it kinda black, can i lift to lighter colour without bleach?

    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can! But you may need to go in with a color remover first to make sure that the box dye is not still on your strands

    • @kim_ki8190
      @kim_ki8190 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colour remover may not work as it will only lift up one colour or probs none. Your roots may turn orange but that’s about it

    do you just wash it out with water?

    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I shampooed as normal and then conditioned but I’d suggest doing a hair mask as the hair may feel a bit drier (moisturizing masks not protein filled)

    Will my curls be ok if I use this method? Thank you for the video by the way ❤

    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Yes, although this method left me with the least amount of damage, it did make my curls more frizzy. That is due to stripping the cuticle. It IS less damaging than mixing with powder bleach but you still have to maintain the integrity of your hair with deep conditioners and treatments❤️ & you’re very welcome☺️ Thank youu for watching (:

    i dyed my virgin hair permanent black, my roots have grown out and i’m wanting to lighten the black now to match my roots, will this work on my hair if it’s virgin under the black and hasn’t been bleached before?

    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a good question! I’d definitely do a test strand so that you can wage your results, but it will be really hard to lift that permanent color without a lightener aka bleach powder or creme. I’d say definitely try a color remover first to get the maximum results if you’re doing this method(w/o bleach) and I’m sure you know this already lol but PLEASE omit your roots the first time around!🤍 I hope this helped (:

    This method would work a lot better if you would of added baking soda to the developer!

    would 20 developer work

    • @ItsMikaela
      @ItsMikaela  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      20 lifts 1-2 levels (very slight difference) 30 lifts 3 levels and 40 lifts up to 8 (when combined with powder or cream lightener)
      I’d go for 30 vol if you want a noticeable difference with the least amount of damage!
