It was a real technique called Trakata, which used the fact that a lightsaber can be turned off and on as a deception method. It was not widely used by either side, as hedi thought it dishonorable to rely on deception, and sith felt it showed weakness not being able to use sheer passion to overwhelm the enemy.

The thing I find funniest so far is that there actually are abilities that let force users absorb energy (called Tutaminis) which can be used to also catch Lightsaber blades so theoretically it might be possible to hold a Lightsaber blade for a short period of time
