  • In June 1998 we visited the old Coronation Street set, shortly before the Granada Studio Tour was abandoned. This set was replaced with the new expanded set elsewhere in Manchester.
It is interesting to long time followers of the "Street" to see some of the business that have long since disappeared.

I did this in 89 and the whole tour was exceptional, my brother and I peaked through every letterbox only to be disappointed that there was nothing inside 😂… back then one side was Baldwins Factory long before the current house and salon set up. They should have held onto the original set as a museum piece but hey Ho that’s progress I guess!

1:03 I used that phone box back when I was around 9 years old, so around 1993-94 ish. My grandma took me & my sister. I remember ringing home from the phonebox & told my mum that''s where I was calling her from 😂😂, I went on the granada studios tour twice as a kid, was a good day out from what I can remember.

This looks like part of the simulation that's broken.

Ok, just to dispel a myth ....Yes, that was the actual exterior shot of the Rovers that was used in the show, but no you couldn't just walk in and have a pint - It was just an empty shell. The interior shots were filmed in the adjacent Studio 1 building ( Which wasn't open to the public ). The Rovers which was open to the public was a mock-up nearby ( Although you could actually drink there ) . It was also used as a waiting room for studio audiences.

@@thebuttonsmasher7184 this was the granada studio tour which ran whilst the set was being used, that is why you couldn't go in the studios due to them filming.
the one you went on in 2014 or 2015 was after itv left the site and moved to media city, therefore you could go in the studios as they were not filming there any more.
you can also visit it current media city set on weekends only but you can't see the inside studios due to filming.
hope that clears up any confusion

Hello David, I enjoyed watching this video. I went to the original tour in the mid 90s when I was only 6 or 7ish, so I don’t really remember it. This brought back some memories. I visited the current set in Salford yesterday which was great. I hope you don’t mind but I have taken a few screenshots of the video clips as a comparison to the buildings of today. I am going to post these on a Coronation Street Facebook page with credit to you for the original pictures. I will share the link with you if you’re interested :) Thanks again for a lovely video. Bethan

Hello Bethan, I am glad you enjoyed the video. Feel free to take as many screen shots or video copies as you like, I am just glad that people are getting some use out of the video. I didn't know that there were tours around the new set which must be very different and larger than the original.

Back then at the Granada set they didn't mind you roaming around but the current Salford street security is very tight and rightly so both street of old and new are fantastic 👍

I would be very interested to know what that tower like structure is located behind the left side of the viaduct, it is visable approx at 1.46 minute into the video and also at the 5.03 mark. You could always see it on the " End of Part One Title" during the mid to late 80s
