    My first roadgoing car was a Vauxhall viva HC , dead simple to work on , but that little 1159 cc engine , when tuned right , shifted like a ferret up a drainpipe ! , sensitive to well - set points & timing , & had great suspension that just sat like it was on rails , the gearbox needed a fifth gear , as the engine had simply bags of power . Not a bad car at all for a then young buck , thanks G.M. ! Happy Days .

    Many 70's cars were worse than earlier models. In 1976 bought a Chevette with the boot, good road holding but didn't like hills. One day on the M62 Pennines hill section an old tatty 105E Anglia even sailed past me so got rid. My 1968 HB Viva SL 90 was much much better and flew along, cornered as if on rails. The HB was very good.

      It had a different face wherever it was sold. The German and Brazillian versions came first, but Isuzu sold one in Japan and didn't Holden sell one under yet a different name? I'd say the U.S. spec '76-78 Chevrolet version looked the best, but they uglified it with square headlights for '79. One other thing that made the U.S. versions bearable was a 4 door model with a stretched wheelbase. But with pollution controls, 5 MPH bumpers and catalytic converters, it might have been even slower and definitely got worse mileage than the European versions, despite the larger OHC engine.

    Not surprised by the inclusion of the Rover SD1 and the Austin Allegro. My mother bought a Rover with the V8 engine - the only engine available in Australia - based upon my P6 3500. Mine was a Rover designed and built in the Rover tradition but the SD1 was clearly not. A car of some promise of which none was delivered. Even as a new car, bits and pieces kept falling off. She got rid of it after 12 months and bought a Mercedes W114 with the 250 engine. It ran for a dozen years with next to no problems.
    We had the misfortune to rent an Allegro on a trip to the UK. We collected it in London and barely made it to Windsor before it broke down completely. The tow-truck driver said they were all like that. A truly awful car with nothing to recommend it.

    • @mebeasensei
      @mebeasensei 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My step Grandfather had Rovers from the mid/late 50s until 1980. He loved them all but he wouldn't have the SD1. Didn't like it and even I remember that they were poorly built..which is strange given they would have been built by the same staff at the new plant as the old ones.

    • @doubledee9675
      @doubledee9675 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The design team included Spencer King and David Bache. David Bache had worked on the P4, P5 and P6 and was well-steeped in the Rover tradition. King went back even further, and my recollection is that he went there in 1945 straight from his military service. His Wilks uncles ran Rover then, very successfully. So far, so good. But whatever they came up with had to go to the BL Board for approval, and who knows what happened there. Certainly William Lyons had little idea of quality engineering, and would have gone for quick rather than proper results. Stokes should have known better but even by then BL was desperate for a car that would sell profitably. The whole car as delivered gave the impression that parts had been designed in metric, parts in imperial and the 2 reconciled at the conversion of 2.5 cm per inch being close enough.
      Those last words really sum up the attitude of BL to the car - close enough is good enough. Certainly a far cry from the P5.

      That engine started out life in the Buick Special, "rope drive" Pontiac Tempest and Oldsmobile F85. There were even plans to build a FWD version of the F85, but when they fell through, that project was re-directed to the development of the much bigger FWD Toronado and Eldorado. I wonder how many 3.5 L V8s have been scavenged from Rover vehicles in order to keep those rare cars alive.

    Nice to know that some are being saved (maybe restored), but these cars had quality and engineering problems, have high emissions, very little safety features, and lots of maintenance if used very much. For historical purposes, OK, but new cars are so much better for the environment and safety. Actually good there are few left and in daily use. Also, quite a stretch to call the Triumph Acclaim a British car.

BL assembly workers continued to make cars with bullet-proof reliability in the form of the R3 and R8 .... both collaborations with Honda. had Honda taken over BL instead of the rapacious BMW things might have been very different, but Honda had Swindon.

    I'd actually love to have a Hillman Imp! It was a technologically brilliant little gem of a car from the Rootes Group with cute and quirky styling to boot. Unfortunately, the car wasn't built as well as it should have been because it was mostly assembled by ex-shipbuilders from Glasgow. A real shame because it absolutely should have run circles around the Austin/Morris Mini in terms of both performance and popularity.

    • @johnmarsh2078
      @johnmarsh2078 ปีที่แล้ว

      Poor design was a problem too. An all alloy engine and a poor water pump with a radiator in threar engine compartment where there was no ram-airflow was a recipe for overheating and the consequent head gasket failures. Running heater pipes from the water pump to the front bulkhead through the sills was good for rust prevention but made for a nightmare when they sprung a leak and caused wasted time in manufacture. The Imp Sport, though, was a proper goer for its time and a real cut above the 998 Cooper.

    Sorry to interrupt! My elderly aunt has a large collection of Motor Sports magazine dating back to 1943. They were collected and lovingly kept in very good condition by her late husband who was an engineer and a car enthusiast. She doesn't want to keep them as she's looking to downsize her home. She's giving them away for free to anyone who's willing to pick them up at her home (she lives in north London), sending them via post is not practical as they are quite heavy and she's not able to manage it. It would make her day knowing the magazines go to someone who will appreciate it as much as her late husband. She also has a classic Volvo (1960's model) she'll be looking to sell in the near future. If anyone is interested, please send me a message. Cheers!

    After reading some of these posts I wouldn't be so hard on British cars, as we had our share of clunkers on this side of the pond. In the early seventies a neighborhood friend had just bought a brand new red Chevrolet Vega and pointed out the rust spot between the hood (bonnet) and fender (wing) this is on a car that was two days old! We also had the lovely Ford Pinto that had the wonderful habit of blowing up when rear ended. And don't even get me started on our version of the Chevette (laughing referred to as the Sh#tvette over here.)

      I have to jump to the defense of the Pinto; that whole story was created by patching together accounts of the less than 100 cars (out of 2,000,000 made!) that had blown up after being hit from behind and creating an imaginary epidemic. You could do that with any car. Not only was the Pinto no more likely to blow up than its competitors, it was safer overall, probably because it was a little bigger. It was a slow , ugly (except the wagon version), unremarkable car that was unfairly smeared by ambulance chasing lawyers.

    Rover SD1, I always feel it would have fared better if it didn't have that discordant nose. It is neither classy, nor characterful. Looks more akin to a Chevette than any Rover
