TUTORIAL - HOW TO MAKE A MIXED MEDIA CAVAS WITH LOTS OF TEXTURE

  • I've become quite smitten by making textured and layer upon layer mixed media canvases. I've taken inspiration from both Finnabair, Mike Deakin, Maremi SmallArt and other talented mixed media artists :).
Here's a full length film, from start to finish, on how I made a mixed media canvas, with both stencils, die cut cogs and junk yard findings. It does have a steampunk touch to it :).
    texture paste (Daler Rowney): www.hobbycraft....
Here are some examples of what products one might use in order to create cog wheels :).

It was great to see one of these being made from start to finish without it being speeded up or like Christine said below with music playing. I feel I can make one of these canvases now that I've seen how you build it up. Thank you for doing this for us newbies!! It was really good!

This was wonderful! I am a painter, but have fallen in love with this kind of art. I truly like the "real time" video's , part of the process of learning a new craft is listening to the thought process of the artist as she/he makes their art. Your running commentary was informative and entertaining. Thank you for your time!

I love this video. Thank you so much for taking the time to make it. It has been the catalyst for my switching to mixed media. As a result, I've become a veritable bower bird, collecting all manner of bits and pieces, and incorporating them into the canvas. I've tweaked it a bit by spackling the board first and texturing it, before I overlay the embellishments. I've also been incorporating some wire work (from my jewellery days) into the mixed media.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว

That sounds like a whole lot of fun... 😍😍😍

Sari, I learned so much from your demonstration. It may have been a little too long. In areas where you are doing fairly lengthy procedures you might want to pause the camera and then come back with the finished stage. You are a delightful teacher and I love your artwork.

I found the video helpful to help feather my artistic skills. Even know it was a long video I enjoyed it, Steampunk is my favorite style of everything.

Loved this piece, first time watching your videos. You asked for feedback so I'm going to give it. I loved watching a video but it was very long I had to fast forward several times. I know a lot of people are able to hit fast forward somehow in their own videos when they post it to speed up the process but so that people can still see what they're doing. Maybe something like that would be better in the future? Again I really enjoy your art this was really fun to watch. Thank you for taking the time to post it.

This video was very informative. I enjoyed seeing you put the elements down in their natural color and blackening later. Sometimes black on black is very hard to see. This was excellent information for me as I am going to create something similar in the near future. Cheers!

Thank you so much for sharing your time and talent with all of us. I hope to make my own video one day showing something similar and I'll give you credit since you've taught me a tremendous amount about how to do this. :-)

The video was long indeed (can't believe I've just watched a movie-long DIY :D) but it was also very interesting to watch your thought process. Full of good tips and advices for us beginners, TFS. I've been meaning to give a try at a "steampunk frame" for months now, collecting (and buying...) some ornements or something but never got to actually sit down and do it (FGS!). Your video is very inspiring and now I have a few days of break, I'm feeling very motivated. I think the harder is to do your first one because there's also this fear of being disappointed with the result but I know too practice is what makes you improved and the good thing with these kind of project is that you don't have to have a precise idea of what you want to do, you make it up as you go (so less risk of screwing it up! :D)
Your video also made me realize the amount of glue stick you need! :D Not sure I have enough left, lol.

thanks for a lovely comment... and yes... glue is a must... the stronger, the better :)...
