    • @robertshen1423
      @robertshen1423 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I see you are also one of those that are convinced China is "bullying" nearby nations. In fact, this is quite the contrary. China is simply trying to re-establish her sovereignty in the region that they claimed before anybody else (of course this is motivated by the need to secure national security by managing the crucial trade routes in the region). Since 1947, each subsequent Chinese government in power has claimed this region. Due to the legal principle of Terra Nullius, China considered the region as nobody's land and decided to claim the area and still does so to this day. Mind you this is after the Treaty of San Francisco which abolished Japanese rule in the region but did not indicate who was to own it. I could go on and on about this but I think the wikipedia article on the issue really tells you everything you need to know: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_disputes_in_the_South_China_Sea.

    Interesting fact about the French EEZ is that it shows the international diplomatic influence of France. A number of the islands that give it EEZ (Clipperton island somewhat near Mexico and quite a few islands in the Southern Indian Ocean as well as near Madagascar) actually shouldn't : they don't have a permanent population, and normally the Montego Bay convention regulating maritime borders and stuff (which France did sign) says that islands that don't have permanent population give you territorial waters, but not EEZ. So France's EEZ should be smaller than it is, but because of their international influence they managed to get all of that extra EEZ nonetheless.

      @@jandron94 from what I read, most of the islands I was talking about are indeed part of a natural reserve, but there's a fair bit of fishing going on in these waters, so the EEZ is still a bit of an advantage because France can regulate fishing as it wishes in it.
      To answer your question, I am French, I learned what I said about the uninhabited islands' EEZ in class a few years ago

    • @jandron94
      @jandron94 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dragskcinnay3184 it's funny because from your profile name and your initial "critical" comment no one could guess that you are French, far from it. But only maybe a Frenchman could be so well informed on the French EEZ anyway.
      My feeling is that in the EU many countries like Germany are kind of concerned with our oversea territories potential, and especially our immense EEZ (360x bigger than the german one : 11.6 vs 0.032 million km2 !).
      So far we have not done much with it... but who knows in the futur.
      In 30 years the population of the oversea territories will probably approximate 8% of the total French population, 50 years ago it was 2%. I think there is a potential if futur French governments have an ambitious and well-fitting plan for those territories and the EEZ.
      Let's not give them away to the Chinese (illegal or legal fishing) and non-French international corporations appetite (in mining, tourism, fishing industries, etc.).

    Hey General :)
    Amazing video and topic!
    It's true that Portugal has one of the largest EEZs in the world, but I wonder: which country has the biggest EEZ in the Mediterranean? Considering how many countries have access to the Mediterranean, it's really a close call between Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain and Libya...
    Also, Kiribati is a very interesting country, consisting of 4 archipelagos that are spread through 3 time zones. Barbs (Geography Now) had made a very good video on them.
    Chile has such EEZ because of the Easter Island being so far away from mainland S.America, I never knew that France has the biggest EEZ as I always thought either Denmark, the UK or the US has the largest EEZs in the world. Oceania is one of the most fascinating regions on the planet - it's such a cultural mix and they really care about every inch of island they have being in the middle of nowhere with respect to the continental mass, closest one being Australia - so every island and every inch of the ocean they can conquer is a huge deal to them.
    Unfortunately, The Black Sea and the Azov Sea are also subject to ongoing tensions and disputes, mostly having to do with Russia's interference and annexation of Crimea which makes the entire Azov Sea disputed between Russia and Ukraine, as well as coastal cities like Odessa and Sevastopol are subject to disputes...
    We (Bulgaria) and Romania don't have an official agreement to the EEZ that we can use in the Black Sea, but we don't have disputes either. It is estimated that in the future we may reach such an agreement that would help and/or prolong maritime trade.

      Turkey had a small EEZ because they dont have many islands and don’t have acces to an ocean but a sea. And they have to share it with many other countries. Also Greece has many islands. And even the small ones get huge EEZ. That’s why Greece dominates the waters west of Turkey. My country India has small Islands called ‘Andaman and Nicobar’ it’s the size of Crete, small. But the surrounding waters add a huge part of our EEZ, despite being a small island more than 2500km of the mainland. So yea, Turkey is unlucky.
