That’s all paddy’s fault lol. My guy is just too charismatic, he just has a charming way of portraying this character. I know this video is for jokes and he might not necessarily be bi, but I wouldn’t doubt he actually chose to portray Nikolai as always flirty cause as a pirate (sorry, privateer) and prince, it’s essential for him to know how to charm others. It’s a good character choice and it makes a more interesting arc between him and mal cause they don’t have that boring rivalry every love triangle has
Oh, yes, I couldn't have imagined a better cast than Paddy 😁. I suppose there are a few possibilities: 1) as you said he flirts for charisma purposes and that's consistent with his character who actually charges his batteries around people; 2) he is a closeted bi - in a world with hardly any discrimination against gays, a prince would still be expected to marry an important woman and make heirs with her, so there'd be more pressure on him to act het than on average people; 3) it's a very wholesome portrayal of male friendship with lots of physical affection and I honestly like this interpretation a lot because we see an awesome role model for young men 4) they are queerbaiting because it gets them more views from the LGBT community... 😑 not my favorite interpretation, but I guess they are not beyond it... they have done amazing in terms of representation, but there are still areas where we could see improvement

Honestly I don't know what is in the producers heads... obviously there is lots of queer rep and that's amazing, but Nikolai (and Mal too) have lots of chemistry even in the books, but there is never any canon confirmation of Nikolai being bi. I don't know if the producers could think that they would win even more points from the queer community if they explore that bi vagueness. Even with all the gay rep, a "prince perfect" protagonist such as Nikolai being queer, would still feel like progress to me. Alina honestly feels ace (she's only ever attracted to amplifiers if you pay attention 😂) and having a throuple with Alina-Mal-Nikolai-Zoya in which Alina is involved in a tertiary way would be huge progress. Poly rep is 0 so far and there are things that stink of mononormativity in the books...

I have no idea what the producers were thinking honestly. The most plausible idea is that they are presenting a very wholesome approach to male friendship, which is great in it's own right; as for queerbaiting isn't it always without evidence - like when two same sex characters are close to each other in order to attract queer audiences but without ever confirming the queer ship or downright denying it, to please the straights?

It's a pamplet, of course, not meant to insinuate that male friendship doesn't exist or isn't wholesome (which it is and I love that representation), but rather that the Grishaverse could use polyamorous rep. There are characters who have chemistry all around, such as Nikolai, but while the affection and flirting are used as a fun story mechanism, it's always as long as all the characters end up in lifelong monogamies. It's the mononormativity that's the problem, not the male friendships.
I'm convinced whoever made this is just reaching a bit too much...🤔
