    So, when are you going to build a case for it? The guitar is not finished without a custom case! Came on Ben, You can and know you should do it... ;)

    Am I the only person who will forever think of this guitar when they remember the COVID pandemic? That’s only to emphasize, not to criticize, how long this guitar has been a part of life. It’s a GD work of art.

      I think it is a good thing if you mainly remember this beauty of a guitar if you think back to this year. That virus surely will stay around for a little longer, just like its cousins of the influenza tribe...

    As a machinist just a tip. When tapping like that leave everything in the lathe chuck and use the lathe tailstop with a center in the back end of the tap. See the hole in the end of the tap that's what it's for, getting the threads straight down the center line. Spin the chuck by hand while feeding pressure with the tailstop. Bingo, perfect centerline threads.

  • @tahoemike5828
    @tahoemike5828 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I once saw a video of a 335 type being wired up and they had a cool trick to get the pots in place. They used a length of tubing, the flexi clear plastic type used for aquariums, and fished it in through the control holes and up through the F-hole. They pushed the tubes onto the ends of the pot shafts, and pulled the pre-wired harness into place with the tubing. Beats drilling holes in the pot shafts.
    As light as I imagine that guitar to be, I'd guess that you could hide a bit of ballast in the back end to balance the neck weight and never notice the weight.

  • @PsychoticFlubber
    @PsychoticFlubber 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    This is the kind of guitar that should make you a staple in the guitar building industry, much like PRS, Les Paul, Fender etc. I could look at the Nebula's all day and never lose the desire to play it.

    • @TheBigburcie
      @TheBigburcie 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, there's no way to make something like this at any scale, at least not more than 4 per year.

    • @BambiTrout
      @BambiTrout 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBigburcie Definitely not quite as beautiful or with the same materials, but if you standardised the parts and used some slightly more common wood around the sides you could probably make a Nebula series at a rate and cost not too different to any other high-end electro-acoustic. A lot of the delays in this build have been from the on-the-fly design and problem solving, so now that Ben's worked out the full process, he could probably figure out a way to simplify several steps.

    • @TheBigburcie
      @TheBigburcie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BambiTrout Absolutely. A semi-hollow with burl top and veneer on the sides would give you 80% of the effect in a more production ready design.

    When I saw the notification that this video had dropped last night, I don’t think I’m overstating to say that I was looking forward to my post breakfast coffee & yt viewing.
    Did not disappoint. The end result is a triumph in both looks and sound, and full of creative solutions and beautiful design decisions.
    Also, when you say “it’s not going to be seen” as a craftsman I once knew said, “but you will know its there”
    One small suggestion… you might consider using brass wool for cleaning your soldering iron as opposed to the sponge. The thermal shock causes oxidation of the tip, which will eventually cause pitting. I get that the electronics stuff isn’t your favourite, but this will make it a tiny bit less tedious in the long term.

    I am just an amateur Lap Steel builder, and to overcome the earthing problem, I make both the nut and the bridge in aluminum, shape and polished it to a chrome finish. This works for me, I also do through the body string set up. That means that the strings are in contact from start to finish. Also helps with resonance and sustain. Cheers Roger Buckley

    Nebula 2.0 is incredible - the unplugged acoustic sound was unbelievable on it's own.
    It is amazing to look back at the last 2 builds - the GGBO and Nebula and consider what has spun out from them. (And the Christmas build hollow Explorer-type)
    New(ish) ways of building a guitar that are on the way to being production models.
    Furthering the concept of using less precious woods in guitars to possible reduce cost/environmental footprint and make what instrument-grade wood reserves we have last longer.
    A new line of pickups.
    And probably a slew of other things I've forgotten about.
    I think this is the true value of these builds - not the end product of a guitar (stunning as it may be) but what concepts and ideas spring from the process - that we also get to see, try or evolve.

    Next time you do this..............shield the entire inside cavity. I've used heavy duty aluminum foil from the supermarket and contact cement. Cut pieces and cover inside of the top, the back and the sides. Then find a place where you can screw a short screw though the foil into the guitar body (On standard guitars, the screws that hold the plastic covers on the back will work. Take a ring connector, attach a wire and screw it into the body. This is the ground connector for the cavity shield and, if you have the entire cavity shielded you should not need to worry about shielding every single wire inside!

    She sounds so beautiful. Probably the most beautiful guitar ever made. That wood is amazing, and that finish is perfect. The bridge turned out awesome too.
    It could use a tone pot, tbh. Because the sound you have right now is awesome, but it would also sound great a lot brighter.
    I'd love to hear it with a touch of distortion. You promised us a demo, remember? lol
    I've watched every single episode in this series as it came out, and seeing it all finally come together makes me all misty eyed. I know you said there's more to do, but like you said, it's alive now. lol Now I can't wait to see and hear the actual final version though.

    • @samuelzetterman
      @samuelzetterman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are aware that the tone pots make the sound less bright right? If not im happy to spread the knowledge. The tone knob cuts away treble. A guitar is actually at its brightest clearest tone without a tone pot at all. Which is why for an example the gretsch hot rods exist(they only have one master volume).

    Not only is blowing on your solder joint harmless with well tinned components, but it also permits the person doing the work to keep the more toxic smoke out of one's face...or at least that's the technique I used all my life. :) Your guitar looks beautiful and sounds bright and full of personality!

    I mentioned this last time. On a Bourns blend pot the two sides are not symmetrical. On your wiring the blue wire connects to ground and the purple is hot. If you do it backwards you won’t get full volume in on the extreme rotations. The reason is from the center wiper to the outside lug is low resistance on the hot side and full resistance on the ground side.
    You wired it the right way. 😃
    A blend pot is two volume controls. You could have still done it, but the value of the pots might be wrong.
