A couple of month earlier I've upload some cover of GNR, because this band was (and still be in fact) a big influence for me. Here is an other drum cover from a band that used to influence me (and that still influence me a little bit), Van Halen !
The groove of this song is pretty tricky, because you really have to feel when to open your hi-hat. Also, there is some interesting and hard fill in this song, like this one at 53s. Well, that one of my favourite VH song...
I've just used a few processing for the sound, and I've also try to keep it a little bit more like classic rock sound than the way I use to mix.
This video was made one month ago. I'm back to university and I don't have my drum with me, only my practices pads, so I will not be able to upload a lot of video during the next few month.

..agreed ...as a guitar player , I listen to this tune for the drum bridge .....it's crazy ....poor Alex was definitely overshadowed..
@@marksc1929 , thanks for giving us drummers some props! To return the favor to you guitarists, I will say that I love pinch harmonics, and Eddie goes to town with them on this song, especially the 4-bar short break between the first chorus and the 2nd verse. Be well.

Alex was throwing stuff like this down when all eyes were on Peart. Love them both but don't let anyone ever tell you that one was better than the other. One of them was just way overshadowed by his brother. I would love to have seen Alex and Neil just hanging out and jamming. They were both obviously huge Bruford fans. I like to think they've all seen this and are among the likes. Great job, Kevin, you not only performed it well but did a good job editing so as to let the viewer know just how involved this seriously underrated piece is.
..love Peart ... but Alex was terribly underrated and over shadowed by Eddie .... .and imma guitar player.

OH HELL YEAH! The snare is what everyone tries to duplicate, but you got the tom sounds down! Al like his little bro had signature sounds...that alone is incredible...these brothers were thinkers and tinkerers like no others but maybe the Young brothers. also able to acheive signature sound

I can't tell you how many times I've watched this video. I grew up listening to Van Halen 70's-80's, and didn't realize how much Alex had going on in this song. So damn good.

@@foamrob6577 Search for Monk Van Halen Running with the devil iirc... He was the band's manager during the Roth years. It's on YT and iirc over 10 hours.
Anyways, Monk said Alex drank more than any other musician he worked with and that list is long. He talked about Alex waking him up and convincing his wife to go shopping. While she dressed, Alex wiped out the mini bar of booze. Monk called this breakfast for Alex. All said, he never saw Alex not put on anything less than 110%.

Seeing this proves how good Alex really was, he just never really showed his abilities that much in later albums
He was just so good that he made it look easy. His slight of hand jazz feel was unmatched
On the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album there is a track called Pleasure Dome. You will see that he did indeed show his abilities on the later albums. Alex actually got better with age which is a rare thing in a band that popular. They usually just stay the same or get worse. Alex quit drinking after the 5150 album. On OU812 he still was playing the same. On the F U C K album (the one mentioned above) his playing and sound went to a whole new level. The album after that was Balance and he played the best he ever has on that album. There’s a concert from that tour on TH-cam. 1995 in Toronto. There’s a concert video of the very 1st show on that tour from Pensacola, FL. That’s the first night so the band isn’t polished on the songs yet. For the Toronto show that came toward the end of the tour. Watch his drum solo from that show. He plays at a level I didn’t think he was capable of. I play drums and Alex & Neil Peart are my favorite drummers. Peart being the better of the 2 but not by much. In 1995 Alex was just as good and maybe even slightly better. Alex injured his neck during the tour and had to start wearing a neck brace. I think it ended up making him better because it kept his technique and form smoother because his head couldn’t move as much so his body’s overall posture was tighter are more balanced. Now I do agree that Alex sometimes rushed his drum parts in the studio or he felt like over playing wasn’t the best way to serve the song. On that same 95 Toronto video they open with Right Now. Compare the drums from the studio version to that live version. That live version completely blows away the studio version.
It’s all just opinion. Bottom line is we both agree Alex was AWESOME!

I play drums and often see Van Halen drum covers and the comment section will be full of comments saying the person nailed it. However that person didn’t nail it because a lot of parts were played incorrectly. Now I don’t comment because I would never say anything negative about someone else’s playing.
However I will comment when someone nails it and you nailed it big time! You played the song correctly but also added your own spin to it when you did certain fills. I haven’t played drums in 10 years and bought an electronic kit recently and this is a song I will cover because it will help get my chops back. If there’s any parts I have trouble figuring out I’ll come watch this video to learn them. Again GREAT JOB 👍🏻
